6. The council (or rather the quango set up to represent the council, Marketing Manchester) took control in 2003, and have a iron grip on it now.

Basically, it was council manoevering and, sadly, they won in the end.

It's back to 1999 now... all corporate awaydays

Facts:

1. Drinking in Gay Village was the norm for several years prior to the 2002 Mardigras.

2. The Police (council) announced this smaller, revised zone 7 days before the event.

3. Cramming thousands of people wanting a drink onto a quarter mile of a canal-lined street was unsafe and unworkable.

4. Mardigras was pulled on the grounds of public safety.

5. The council caved in three days before the event, leaving the organisers three days to try and re-stage, despite many cancellations.
