"bad guy" Most military forces have these as standard issue, they provide excellent protection from the sun and sand not only that but they can be tied into a makeshift sling for broken arms wrists, bandages or for wrapping wounds if need be. And they help break up your face so its harder to be seen from a distance. I'm sure there are more uses, but really our armed forces would be stupid not to issue a solider one of these.

@Kokoots I never wore a scarf in my life, but I've come to appreciate them here in Kabul. They're a bit more fashionable than a neck gator and help me mix in with the Afghans. I just don't prefer to cough into them or wipe my nose with them like some of the Afghans do.

They make nice gifts too, for my relatives and lady friends. I get them (probably Chinese or Indian and not authentic Afghan pashmira) for about 3 or 4 bucks a piece. Let me know if you need any!

That said, there have been forms of this head scarf that pre-date Islam by several thousand years, including the traditional Jewish Kefiyah. It was about function, not religion/ethnicity, up until the 1930s Arab revolt in Palestine, when it became a symbol of nationalism. Learn your history.

Didn't see many shemaghs in the 'stan, but definitely popular in iraq. And this is far from how anyone ties them. its wrapped around the head as a headdress with a long piece dangling on one side that you can wrap around your head and tuck into the top on the other side
