Ah yes..Ross Childress. Great writer and guitarist but not rated so highly for personal decisions and choices made in his life that have obviously affected many. Karma...
Nice, the guitar Ross is playing is still around, I held it and took photos of it at his last local gig. man, its beat up...the pick up select switch is broke also. But it still sounds great! I keep telling him that I will fix it but I think he likes it as it is. Meh, he's a rockin guy!
@sultanofsick I saw that after I posted it this morning. I have to admit, I was ashmaed of myself for being so negative (after discovering I said the same negative comment a year ago)....even if it IS the truth. I shouldn't be posting comments that aren't constructive.
I think humanity got screwed by his departure from CS. I know its all personal... I wish I had half this much talent playing and writing. I ain't too sure I would make the same decisions.
why are you concern about who writes the better song? What's the purpose of Ed Roland who is a great lyricist? Joel was given an opportunity by Ed to record a song for contribution. We're talking about guitar prowess here, not song writing ability. Ross is the man! Joel is not even close to him. Better listen to Starfish and Coffee that's Ross' new band. nuff said.
Hope someday read my comment! I agree that Ross was great part of Colletive Soul. Without him there will be no more songs like December or The World I know...of course Dandy Life was a great Ross Coposition. We miss you Ross! Popularity of CS went down when you left them behind.
CSoul without Ross Childress is like AC~DC w/out Angus or Zeppelin without Page. It makes me sad that the band lost the likes of Ross and Shane, but people have to move on with their lives. CS will never be the same for me. BTW thanks for sharing this vid.
A huge component of the band--and without him they are seemingly nothing IMHO. I'll never forget watching them opening for Creed and wondering why it wasn't the other way around. I'll also never forget watching them play in a country western bar (yeah both kinds) wondering why that type of venue. I can just imagine RC getting fed up at some point out of frustration. I truly hope he finds a band where his guitar skills will 'shine' again.
Yeah, I think I heard him try his hand at singing. Needless to say, as the incredible lead guitarist he is, it was what was expected. Kinda like when Keith Richards does his one song at a Stones concert. He needs to get with a big act, like maybe Prince or something, and do some composing and lead guitar for him. His licks would be worth the money for sure.
Are you kidding me? CS is all of the members, Ed Roland is the creative machine if anyone.
Also, Joel Kosche is a great guitarist and Ryan Hoyle is much better than Shane Evans was. Obviously you haven't been watching any of their live performances or the superb Home DvD. All of you should be ashamed.
I have the Home DVD! and I've seen it a hundred times, and still unconvinced. Obviously, you haven't been watching collective soul since 1994. I have tons of their live performances. Better know who you're talking to. Joel Kosche was Ross' guitar tech for 8 years! Know your facts before you comment, coz nobody here agrees with you.
LoL, I've been listening to them since I was six years old pal. I have every single album and song. For you to say that CSoul sucks without him, or that CSoul is at loss without him is a god damn travesty upon these artists. And yes, I know Joel Kosche was his tech, hmm...perhaps that says something about his own talent ey?
hahaha! look at the other comments above! I think it's the other way around pal. Nobody here agrees with you..just read the comments..you're out of place dude! without Ross, you will never hear songs like, Heavy, Generate, The Next Homecoming, etc.!! and when you were six years old, I was already playing Shine, and their other songs..you're still itching your daddy's pants that time kid.
Counting the Days, Better Now, Persuasion of You, New Vibration, I Don't Need Anymore Friends....just to name a few great songs without Ross or Shane.
Don't get me wrong, Ross was a great guitarist, but CSoul is by no means dead without him. You seriously need to rethink your slowly diminishing qualities that you are laying down upon yourself, for one day it will come back to take a humongous bite out of your stupid ass.
I actually agree with you. Joel can hold his own...he's really good actually. BUT...it will never be the same without Ross (and I like nearly every CS tune...except for Dandy Life....hahahahah).
It is very true, Ross Childress was a great member of the band, a great guitarist, a good singer and a wonderful songwriter, but that doesn't mean that they are completely lost without him. Don't get me wrong, Ross is amazing, and the band isn't the same without him, but I think Joel Kosche can hold his own. True, Afterwords wasn't their best album, but it was very solid, something they weren't really able to do since their second album.
collective soul's songs are now more pop-related. I miss the old school rock.. Tell me if you've heard of a nice guitar solo (from any songs) from Joel since he came aboard? none. I have nothing against him, but he is just not on the same league with Ross. Not even close. But the lyrical content of their recent albums are still great, because of Ed. Riff wise? never the same.
Dosage is my favorite STUDIO album. Home is a Live album, and is my favorite album of all time. Oh, and Joel's solo in the live version of Better Now is awesome.
From my understanding...there is a VERY good reason Ross and CS had to part ways, but he is an incredible guitar and musical talent and I would give anything to play half as well as he does. The new lead guitarist "Joel" is also amazing.
I didn't get caught up in the whole Twilight thing, but they reintroduced the world to this song so it's all good.

no idea. although he DID appear at Collective Soul's induction to the Georgia Rock and Roll HOF. still wearing that damn knit beanie :P

Ha ha! The sound guy barely has Ed's guitar in the mix! This probably pissed Ed off later. Ross overwhelmed the stage.
