  • Nice video Rick. I have an RA-DA that I hope to have working one day soon. If I do get it working I will post a video. Gary

  • @HD7100

Great! As you know I like the 1920's radios.

  • Hi Richard,

In revewing your vids, I began to wonder if you have any tips. I have 9 WD-11s, but several show open filiments.. Two of them, I have heated the end if the pin tips and have gotten them back to showing contiuity, but for only a short time. Do you have any suggestions for resoldering tube pins?

  • @WB8MHE

    Hi,

What you have done is about the only save thing to try, maybe trying to re-heat the pins and adding more solder down the pins. That includes wicking the old solder out. Almost anything else may destroy the tube.

    Rick

  • What an incredibly simple design! Nice demo.

  • Thanks CameramanLink

    Yes it is and

Edwin Howard Armstrong invented this circuit when he was 24, and it changed the world.

  • @AllAmericanFiveRadio That's amazing. I just can't wrap my mind around how 1 tube can do so much in these old radios without there being some kind of interference.

  • @CameramanLink

It does interfere and or influence each other a little. The very bottom line is, this works because the frequency of Audio and RF are very far apart. And there so far apart that the distortion is minamual. The Audio is also limited to just about voice frequency only, that also lessens distortion. And it is easier to understand time slicing in computers, I do this, next time slice I do that. The regen circuit is full real time.

  • Rick, every video you make is so very impressive, they make my own efforts look so amateurish. I think I'd like to see you give a YouTube master class and tell us how you do it so well, the equipment, settings and procedure. And another thing, is America full of old radios or is it that you've got them all???

    Kind Regards ...Andy.

  • Thanks AndyDaviesByTheSea

    Hey Andy,

I was a software course developed and taught software courses for a large company for over ten years. And I am an award winning and prise winning photographer and have been into photography and electronics starting back in High School.

  • @AndyDaviesByTheSea

But I'm not doing anything that you could not do. I use Adobe FreeHand to make the drawings, and Adobe PhotoShop Elements and Premiere Elements to produce the videos. I make the videos into the Adobe FLV format, all-other formats are very large at 1080i/p.

  • @AllAmericanFiveRadio

Whatever you’re doing it's good! I'm using Premier Elements 9 and I just opened up a 'New Project' and I don't have the option to change setting to FLV at the start of the creating/editing process, is it something to do when up loading?

Do you upload to YT from within the Photoshop package or do you do it manually? Maybe that's where the FLV option comes in?

    Kind Regards ... Andy

  • @AndyDaviesByTheSea

    Hey Andy,

    I'm using Elements 7.

Yes I upload manual. You have many more options there. In 7 I had to change format options to get full 1080i/p, but it does it. Also you do not get something for nothing. The last video I made, and it is 1080 format, took about two hours to compile, but the FLV file size is 57.6mb. In other formats it would be over a Gig.

If you have trouble setting this up, I'll be glad to help. Send pictures of my options.

    Regards,

    Rick

  • @AllAmericanFiveRadio

Thanks Rick, I've had a look and I have a bunch of options when I come to save the movie from PE9, it's under the 'share option'. If I save direct from PE9 to YT it is listed as 'FLV for YouTube' but I see that I have other options, I guess I need time to play a bit more.

I've just seen a comment on someone's site saying, 'Don't let anything digital know you're in a hurry’

You'll let me know when you've built that time machine won't you?

    Thanks again ...Andy

  • @AndyDaviesByTheSea

I don't think I have bought all the radios but I have not seen any at flea markets for a few years. The last one I bought was a Magnavox 'J' 1925 five tube set. And I am glad I bought my radio when I did because some I have not seen for sale in years. My Stromberg Carlson 501-A is an example.

  • @AndyDaviesByTheSea

I have been thinking of selling some my collection. I do know a few collectors and they seem to be busy buying and selling.

    Regards

    Rick

  • Im always looking forward to your next video, so interesting how you explain things.so clearly.

  • Thanks Shandybrother

  • Hi. I was a qualified radio and TV engineer 20 years ago.. at age of 25, though IC and transistorised.

The valve radios are so fascinating.

I did some valve study in my collage days and I understand all the circuit diagrams that you put on here. But you continue to educate me.

Mr. AllAmericanFiveRadio your voice is so soothing and your videos are so educational.

    Keep them coming Sir.

    from England.

  • Thanks banjax66

  • Good Video! I was wondering about the tubes. In your last vid about this RS, you said that those were not WD-11s but another tube that had been rebased. Do you know what they were> I don't play my Radiola III much, because I only have the 2 good WD-11s. BTY, the RS seems a lot like the Radiola III. Thanks again for the good work and vids.

  • Thanks WB8MHE

I Googled WD-11 and found a site by "antiquewireless org" that had information about substitutions. The RS is simular to the III and when the III-A came out that ended RS.

  • Very interesting, Rick. Though I have no interest in really vintage battery operated radios, they're still cool to see and hear. Thanks, my friend.

BTW...one of those old, round, glass gold fish bowls makes a pretty good amplifier.

    Regards,

    John

  • Thanks joernone

    Hey John,

My great aunt explained what a big deal radio was and how they listen to it with an earphone set. Some very interesting stories.

    Regards,

    Rick

  • I really loved your videos,

  • Thanks SpeakerFreak95

  • Thanks for all your videos. I always love when another pops up in my subscription and I have to watch it straight away! I might even do my own video in this format to show my home-built FM radio transmitter. It isn't much to look at, but it does the job and broadcasts several miles.

  • Thanks jimbobg65

A video on a FM transmitter would be a good idea. There is a lot of interest in that kind of project.
