Yeah it's called a USB Y-Cord. Make sure it's 2 USB to mini USB. The mini usb goes into the hard drive, and the normal usbs go into the dvd usb port and into a usb AC charger which of course goes into the wall. If it doesn't work first go, try switching the normal USBs around. If you just type 'USB Y Cord' into ebay, it should come up with tons of them. Only cost a couple of bucks too :) Good luck!
I bought a cord like this one off Ebay which I think is essentially the same thing. It's got one usb end which goes out to another usb and a mini usb. Just waiting on it to come from Hong Kong. Fingers crossed.
Hey. does it mater how many amps?? im using a samsung phone charger with 5v and 0.7 amps. when i plug it in i can here the disk speeding up and then makes like a clicking sound and slows down fast and then speeds up again and repeats..
Of COURSE it matters what amps . Nearly all those adapters give out 5v DC, the only diff is the amperage. You need more amps, check out the specs of the drive. SOme shops (maplin) sell a dc adapter with mutiple outputs at varying amperages to suit many devices. This would suit
Yes It's a Great Idea. I've done the same as this video and wow it's working, Now I don't need to buy that 60-80$ media player. Just having a cheap DVD player with USB port and a 1 TB external USB HD and enjoy all your movies, pictures or songs on TV.
any way, WD sent me the duel connect cable for my ibook for free, but I really need the extra port for my mouse, so, all I have is a 6v 500 ma adapter- will it work? 1 extra volt wont do much, or will it?
Hi Kansasa, Glad that I have seen this link. I am in a similar situation where I need to connect my drive to my USB featured DVD.I have a Y cable with me, are you sure that using this along with 5V adapter doesn't work?..do I need to follow the above procedure to make it work. Also suggest me on good 5V usb power adapter.
You have to be able to hook up the power from the 5v adapter. If you are using a western digital passport drive it has nowhere to hook up, that's why I had to splice into the cable. It also depends on the type of passport drive you have, I think some of the older ones had a hookup but I know the newer ones do not. As for the 5v adapter, I used an old LG cell phone charger, as long as it meets the specs it will work :)
just plug the charger in, connect the HDD´s plug with the socket of the usb-y-cable.
plug the data-plug of the y-cable into the DVD-player and the power-plug of the y-cable in the charger. it works with no risk, wath what it looks like: (remove the spaces)
h t t p : / / w w w . o y l a 1 0 . d e / u s e r d a t e n / 4 1 0 0 9 5 3 8 / b i l d e r / w d _ p a s s p o r t . J P G
This would work as long as the data part does not have the power pins. I tried this and my dvd player would cut out the power I tried to use from an external source when I hooked it up, that's why I made the cable. I also notice in the picture that the connection to the passport on the Y cable is not a mini end??
It DOES matter which wires you hook up where, else you'll make a short circuit and damage the drive.
Black is standard for ground and red is standard for +5v output, or for any type of DC + output on power supplies with only one output such as yours. However i've seen many different colors on different adapters, and i've even seen some wired the other way around (cheap Chinese adapters). So always test your power source with a multimeter first.
works! just take time and do it right the first time. I used heat shrink though. will last longer. Also, I used an extra =power supply I had from my xm radio. 5v 2+ amps.
Hi mysterioso07, glad it worked for you. I agree the heat shrink will last longer and the next time I'm in the city I think I'll pick some up and replace the black electrical tape. Thanks for the comment.
why not just buy the HD video converter....i got mine few months ago and it works perfect and i got over 150 movies in my hard drive

@cegoins25 Parts around my house were 0 dollars and I live where everything I get has to be ordered so this was no wait time either. :)

That's what my passport would do before I made the cord. Sounds like it's not getting enough power, double check that you cut the the right wires.

The drives need a minimum of 1A if you are choosing a power supply.
sorcererbm 3 years ago
no the minimum is 5V 5MA=0.5A

A better way without any risk:
buy 2 things: a USB Y-Cable and an USB- Charger.
just plug the charger in, connect the HDD´s plug with the socket of the usb-y-cable.
plug the data-plug of the y-cable into the DVD-player and the power-plug of the y-cable in the charger. it works with no risk, wath what it looks like: (remove the spaces)
