Since this still seems to be an issues, it used to be "girl on my shoulder" like a parrot who is on your shoulder, it's always there for you. Once the girl left him, it wouldn't make sense if he still had a girl, so he changed it back to the metaphore "bird on my shoulder" :) I love this song

Actually, it /is/ "bird on my shoulder". If you listen closely you can hear the "b" and in the story it makes sense. It's "bird" because he /lost/ the girl and though he loved the girl he's moving on and got a bird as a pet (probably) to replace her until he can find someone else.
