Hybrids and full electric vehicles are a good Idea but think about it the batteries are under the rear seats in most of these that's where little babys sit. The batteries and charging system create an electromagnetic field, it probably does damage to the child. Their not worth it in my opinion
@DCdrums88 Dude cell phones produce more deaths per year than any batteries. Yet we loved them don't we? Keep on texting while driving. Oh did I mentioned radiation from the antenna? No? Ok put a cell phone near an amplifier of any kind you'll hear the encoded waves alright. Keep on dreaming.
Ford announced this car will cost $40,000. So, few people will be able to afford it, great. Furthermore, about 72% of all the electricity generated in the US comes from fossil fuels. Because of this, this electric car is still contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. We need to put some serious investment into geothermal energy production. An electric car is a step in the right direction, but if the electricity used to run the car still comes from burning coal, we haven't helped the environment
@Ryan9145X well, geothermal is a good idea but really it would be great if we could stop being political about nuclear energy and so scared of it... its a great way of powering a city on the cheapest most available fuel on earth, people wouldnt have to worry so much either if we just looked into it a little more.
@Gasoline500 I absolutely agree. I live in California where one too many people have seen "The China Syndrome." I also live in Marin County, where we pat ourselves on the back for being "green." Does anyone ask themselves about the lithium ion battery plants that are polluting the water in China? Or when you plug in their all-electric vehicles, that some coal-burning plant in some far corner of our state is spewing the same kind of crud into the air that we're trying to prevent?
it's more embarrassing than a hybrid, but it's got balls cuz its from an american company and its made in america. it's better than the leaf but still more embarrassing than even a prius!
@SteinGermany1939 Presently, you are correct. My expectation is that electric cars be able to exceed 1,000 miles on a charge once solid state batteries are employed.
BUT keep in mind that each tire has 7 gallons of oil in them, add in the production of the tire which is another 4 gallons oil and another 3 gallons of oil for transporting and other oil based materials, you have a car (which is awesome) that has almost 60 gallons of oil in all 4 tires combined.
If a tire company like Goodyear can come up with the Biotech tire produced from raw tree materials, then we'll be 100% FREE from gas and oil cars.
Charging your car can get annoying. People get Lazy to even plug-in their cell phone, what makes you think their gonna charge their car after they park-it in the Garage? However the Benefits far Outweigh the Costs. Electric Cars get $.02 cents a mile, $6.75 to Fully Charge. 150 MPG!! Thats 5X's the MPG of a regular gasoline car. Electric cars should improve in range thus charging will lessen to about once a week. I personally don't mind charging my car everyday. It's fun.
@saiedahadi the most logical step in cars would be to harness the power of friction for this cars, namely wind friction against the car as it moves forward which can be used to regenerate the batteries sorta like a horizonal wind turbine that can be placed on roof and undercarriage of the car.
I like it, but I don't think our infrastructure is ready for a FULL EV, especially if you want to go on long road trips. If its for commuting in the city, then its perfect. But Chevy's got the right idea with their plug in hybrid (VOLT) IMO. You can commute all day on the electric engine but the gas range extender gives you the option of going cross country and filling up at the pump quickly. That said, thumbs up to Ford and Chevy for giving electrics a chance!
You hippies and your little toys. Bad enuff you punks put corn in gas. We got plenty of gas and oil on us soil. Your grand kidses grand kidses grand kids wont know what do with it all. The retarted folks in dc want to think that gas is getting harder to find. Bs they know it. Hippies stop put your crappy corn in our good gas. It breaks our cars faster. Way to go green. Now we spend more green on buying more cars retards. Get helmet too. That make u look cool in this crappy car.
@12h8u do the math. We are not far from peck oil and very expensive gas,and with gas price right now it is economical with currant cost of ev to drive one. Gas is like the dollar. Get out when get when still can. I no hippie, I let my wallet tell me what is best to drive.
Now listen to the nay-sayers blow their horns. "The horse-less carriage will never catch on". We will laugh - thinking back that cars made the noise of a dinosaur after the comet hit, blew smoke out that choked people and wrecked the planet's AC system, Used so much energy that we bankrupted the country fighting wars to try and keep the fuel coming, wasted so much fuel that if you didn't have a radiator to get rid of wasted energy, the motor would melt in 3 minutes..etc etc. Gas? Forgeddaboudit
With half the recharge time of the Nissan Leaf, this is actually a car I would buy tomorrow, if it were available. The Leaf is a really nice car though. The seats feel like memory foam, and the trunk can fit four suitcases. It is practical, but the Ford EV is more so. Too bad it won't be out until the end of 2012.
It's a really attractive car. Kudos to American car companies for finally making small cars that aren't ugly. Will either be purchasing this or a Leaf, but Ford better hurry and get this thing in showrooms.
@SuperHello311 There suppose to come out with a house hold charger for the car when you buy it. Its like buying a ipod or something and getting the charger with it. The charger will take up as much engergy as a house hold dryer.
I can just see some idiot messing with the charging station,, or tripping over the cord, lol Look ma, someone put gum in my charging tank! I really hope that this takes off tho. I would like a electric car, but don't want a second car for the long trips.
Ohh I feel bad for the future, the global oil industry collapse is going to cause a meltdown that will dwarf the housing collapse, as this one will not be subject just to the united states and europe. This will be the world. And o yea lets not forget that this is the best thing that can happen as price deflation will make the world easier to live in, instead of this price inflation. Spread the truth and friend me if you want to share ideas.
@mellowman1001 Naw, My gess would be an emergency diesel generator.
Or if there is no chargeing stations on you area, an on the fly dynamic generation by a small diesel engine.
Meaning that if you drop below 5% charge it will turn on and keep you going 100 miles more until you reach a charge point, thats what they should do. Solar panes are weak has hell.
They go to all this trouble to build an electric car and it looks like a gas car. Ford, how about covering up those wheel wells? A boat tail would look nice, and provide better aerodynamics. Belly pan would be good, too.
my question is: when are these charge points gonna be out? and how long does the battery last? im hoping to buy one these cars next year, and i would realy like to know these information.
all this green shit makes me feel all squishy inside. Ahhhhh electric cars! lets all go and hug the nearest tree. How many electric cars are out there now? and people are still bitching we don't have one or that someone killed the electric car blah blah blah.
Electric or gas? They are both very alike. It takes fossil fuels to generate electricity. Yes, there are natural ways such as solar, hydroelectric etc... but our infrastructure is not going to change that fast. As soon as we know it, if we stop buying gas, the government will start charging the same for electric. They would probably even make us pay a fee for having an electric car. Corporations and the government will find a way to get in consumer's pockets.
@BusterBunker Well if you're so worried, put solar panels on your house. Depending on where you live that could be problem solved. Which is the great thing about electric power, by the way: you can generate it yourself. Can't say that about gas.
Well, to tell you the truth, I don't really care that much. As long as gas stays under four dollars in Ohio, I'll be happy. Don't get me wrong, electric cars are great. Maybe I will buy one.
@BusterBunker You're fucken ignorant. I won't correct you. I want people to laugh at how dumb you are. Your brain suppose to change rapidly when you're 6 years old and as you grow your logic grows as well. Apparently your brain is still the size of a peanut.
Apparently, you are the only one who as a problem with my comment. Let the world see how smart you really are. I dare you to correct me. You bash my opinion, but you don't have an opinion. People are going to be laughing at your comment.
Nice but who can afford one? Even with a tax cred. The vid is all "eye candy" on the car. BFD! Trying to find tech info on this thing is damn near impossible! Cheaper to convert my old car to electric! Oh yeah! FTOC!
Yeah, cant wait to pollute the air with all the Co2 Emissions from coal fired power plants used to run these electric cars. Figure it out people, Go Green, Go nuclear!!!
Hopefully they will retain the look of the car, I like it. I think much of the reasons why "green" cars are avoided by many people is their reluctance to compromise performance and looks for "green" faddiness, and car names that begin with eco or leaf. If this car is marketed as a normal car, that happens to be electric (with all the benefits of EV driving) then this car will be a success. I want one.
@GreggSells I own a plug in electric and it cost me approximately $2.80 for a full charge (about 145 miles) and I have no maintenance issues. So keep on sucking on that Arab oil tit you fool.
@GreggSells here in the UK, running costs are 2p per mile for an electric car this size, as opposed to about 14p per mile for a petrol equivalent. And when have you EVER heard of a girl who has actually fallen for a guy because of a car...If you did, what kind of girl was she?
Now that 2 MAJOR car companies have jumped on this, it'll only be a matter of time before all others jump in on it. The Chevy Volt isn't good enough. They are too stuck on gasoline.
I think Libya should be the final straw for everyone. The times of gasoline price fluctuations are over. Gasoline is dead.
You are clueless, plants? Why not organic waste. I am not talking about atiquated energy sources such as coal, HYDRO, are you aware of that renewable source of electricity? Biodiesel is still combustion, clue yourself in to the advantages of electric drive and the many other petroleum based fluids etc that are not used. Biodiesel is just one of many solutions, as is electric, both situation dependant, you are ignorant, have you considered the opportunity costs of biodiesel from plants? Wow.
This will likely be my future daily commuter. Well done FORD. Well researched technology ahead of what any competition offers in an EV for the price. Again, value perfo (battery heating, cooling) mance Ford has come through. Looks great and allows me to get break free of the ridiculous tax at the pump the gov.'s apply in my area. Electricity is no issue where I live and it comes from a renewable source. Will the Gov.s act responsibly and provide solid tax credits? They should be!
Jeez, get over the electric cars already. They are stupid and just a fad with politicians and tree huggers. The limited range makes this nothing more then a niche machine. BTW, it takes fossil fuels to make the electric. Everyone goes electric and then there is a price hike in electric and you have to burn even more fuels to keep up with demand. Bio Diesel is the clear solution. Grow our fuel and no changing to experimental gizmos, but no special interest money to be made.
@creeper711 Ridiculous comment. It takes fossil fuels to build other vehicles aswell. Have a look at the average commuting distance the vast majority of Americans and Canadians undergo to and fro from work and do the math. You will quickly realize how important EV's will be as a part of the solution. Your comments about stupidity should be directed towards yourself.
@4632v Current Diesel technology is already in existence and it takes nothing to convert them over to the fuel they were designed to use. Obviously you are clueless on how dangerously toxic battery technology is. Nor do you clue of the 10 year life span of the batteries in these cars. WHich then you'll have to dispose of the toxic batteries. People can produce fuel for diesel cars in their yards if need be. A diesel can go 600 miles on one tan. 23KW Battery @ 2.1lbs of coal per KW,
@creeper711 One more reply to your uniformed response. Car batteries in fact are the most recycled waste product on the earth today, you heard of recycling? Where I live electricity is produced by a renewable resource, in fact we sell it to the USA aswell. Lithium ion batteries are a challenge but there will be many companies that will figure it out. How many 10yr. plus cars do you see on the road? Note I stated EV's are a part solution, Hopefull N Americans start to accept diesel..
@4632v Another clueless response. The ion batteries are not the ones recycled.. DUH !!! "will figure it out"? You hope. Let's try this - ELECTRIC produced mostly by COAL. Biodiesel produced by PLANTS. COAL = more pollution to dig it, transport it and then burn. Biodiesel grown locally, better yet straight veggie. Biodiesel cost controlled as machinery to harvest uses it's own grown product, ELECTRIC not cost controlled as coal cost rises, so does electric. You are clueless on energy.
@creeper711 As a final addition to compensate for your obviously ignorant statements, Li-ion batteries as well as all other associated batteries have been mass recycled by for example a major european based company for close to a decade. They are a major global supplier and recycler of these batteries, do a quick google search, they have an excellent pdf posted, read and learn and keep your foolish commentary to yourself.
@4632v Okay one last time for your dumb ignorance. Ion battery recycling takes ENERGY. Energy to transport, energy to process(melting to avoid hazardous waste), Energy to refine, additional materials to process. SO, electric cars are nothing more then ONE BIG ENERGY SUCK and a really stupid idea appease some ignorant people like you. Then of course you're riding around in one big EF field. People are concerned with phones, but want electric cars.. Talk about dumb. BIO-DIESEL is the solution..
@creeper711 Congratulations, you understand recycling takes energy, hopefully you understand the point of recycling, if not you must have missed the last few decades....As mentioned, no combustion which has many advantages and much savings in terms of all associated with combustion. As for cell phones your ignorance shines again, no relationship with batteries. I think you mean EMF, not EF, have you heard of shielding and stnadards that manufacturers must meet to market electrical items?
@4632v Okay dunce, Bio-diesel requires NO RECYCLING.. Get it....... Electric cars require a huge infrastructure to be built. With NO energy savings, once you add in all the other nonsense. You crack me up with your ignorance of EMF fields. How do you think these little electric cars get down the road? Shielding standards suck and can only do so much. I won't even go into the dangers of driving down the road with a high voltage battery under you butt.
@creeper711 You are truly nuts. Biodiesel is fueling combustion GET IT? Growing plants (+opportunity costs) is never going to generate what is required, generating a clean power source through sustainable means currently exists and is growing. You research, we've been using affordable clean hydro power for many decades without issue. For the last time, EV's are part of the solution, specific application to largely reduce fossil fuel dependance. Batt manufacturer recycling infrastructure exists.
@creeper711 As for bio-diesel being the only solution you are clearly wrong, it is one of several. Is a combustion engine able to recycle part of its expended energy to recharge itself? NO. As EV's refine and develop they will be an important part of a cleaner planet with less use of resources to maintain them vs. combustion. For daily commuting they are an excellent addition. As for generating electricity that too will improve, we have hydro and with more wind and sea...
@4632v hydro..... HAHA !!! You truly are a dreamer and sucker for technologies that are not practical. Bio-diesel is a renewable source, the ultimate in recycling. Hydro... that is so funny....... I suggest you spend 5 minutes researching it and you'll see how stupid that is, even more so then dumb electric cars with very limited range. Hope you don't need your electric car in an emergency while it's discharged.
@creeper711 Most of this nonesense has been covered. As for limited range, its growing and presently meets the needs of the main application, daily commuting which accounts for a huge % of gasoline consumption. This is no dream, you are commenting on a video showing you a late to market EV, LOL...now go grow some plants....
@teta809 - Yes, this is the real key to a rapid move to general EV adoption. As for fast charging, my EV's cells can be re-charged in 20 mins. I suspect Ford's can too but there aren't any fast - Level 3 - chargers out there yet so they are playing it safe. My cells would need a source of power capable of putting 500A at around 150V to recharge from empty in 20 mins. That's about 75kW! It would also mean actively cooling the cells would which add cost and complexity.
@niceboy60 - Except that petrol uses electricity to refine - in fact it uses more electricity than an EV will use to go the same distance as the ICE vehicle. As petrol & diesel is refined locally this would equate to a net saving in electricity. Then you have all the additional savings in moving and pumping the fuel here and there. Against this is the efficiency of the electric grid (not wonderful) and electric drive trains (about 70 to 90%), of course. The average ICE is only 20 - 30%. MW
@roykaz I like this cool, seeing the charge station makes my nerves tingle. U.S. will get it late 2011, but I think Europe will get it earlier. So maybe october or august for you guys.
@kytanokyle Well Said. People need to wake up and quit pretending they are experts. I live in an energy positive house meaning I generate more power than I consume and I charge my plug in electric car with the solar power I create. It cost me absolutely nothing for transportation and I have no utility bills. It can be done! Every time I see turmoil in the middle east I just laugh because those SOB's are not getting ANY of my money.
@flippnbricks2o8 Next time buy a normal car strictly for your personal needs not to be the great road snob or greater than others.Drivers nowadays are divided in 2 parts:
- those who use the car for shopping, holidays, abroad trips an care about
- those who fuck the environment coz they are some idiots which doesn't know what life is.They just consume without producing.
Listen here pal, i let you kiss corporations' ass in the future as u want while we will be happy with electric cars ;)
@Denver542 Hydrogen cars are electric cars that use hydrogen fuel cells instead of batteries. Upside? they refill in 10 minutes instead of 25. Downside? you get nearly all of the electricity out of the batteries that you use to charge it. You only get half of the energy out of hydrogen that it takes to produce it.
Top gear is the best show ever, but never listen to them about anything green or fuel efficient. Even if it is captain slow's portion.
All you Americans better not start driving Electric cars. We pay many a congressman plenty of money to keep the Petrol business going. We are buying up all the patents so you have no choice but to buy our crude fuel. We have been monopolising this business for over 100 years. What makes you think you can change the course of history.
Takes $2.50 to fully charge this little beast of a car. I just filled up my Fusion Hybrid with about 75 miles to E and it was $46.00. Ok, sure, $46 gets you around 700 miles but to get 700 miles in this Focus, it's only $17.50! So I can basically go 3X the distance of my fusion Hybrid for $46, I can't wait to drive this guy!
@shinyygengar Even if you park the car at -20C outside, the modern batteries are isolated and it will take more than 3 days for them to reach outside temperature. The current ALL-electric cars are city cars designed to be plugged when parked. Even at -20C cold, the car if plugged will receive a preheating from the plug's electricity, not the batteries and as such the battery will be in the correct temperature before you go. You can even order preheating by your mobile 5mins before you go.
@TheusZeusDeus I cannot stand hearing any more bollocks about cold, autonomy, off-roading and other such idiocies. If you have 7 kids you will need a mini-van, not a city-car. If you are a truck driver you need a diesel, not a gasoline. But if you are in a city, you need a city car. And electric vehicules ARE city cars.
According to researched 89% of drivers that drive everyday, make less than 50km per day!!! Their average speed is about 40km/hr!!!!! I.e. it is all about urban and suburban...
@TheusZeusDeus Manufacturers propose currently fully functional normal cars (i.e. with absolutely no comfort sacrificed, eg. radio system, air-condition, hydraulic steering etc. etc.) with electric motors and batteries that ensure a minimum of 150 km autonomy for a limited max speed of 130km (but this speed instantly reached in shorter acceleration times than gasoline cars). More than what an everyday use in and around the city will require. EVs will be the 2nd city car of the family.
@CarlVanDoren actually...not true at all. The batteries in older model Priuses have lasted for 12 or more years. The batteries in this Focus will even be more advanced. It's misstatements like yours that prevent us from advancing.
@CarlVanDoren@CarlVanDoren actually...not true at all. The batteries in older model Priuses have lasted for 12 or more years. The batteries in this Focus will even be more advanced. It's misstatements like yours that prevent us from advancing.
Did you notice the length of that charging cord? That is my 1 complaint about the J1772 charging standard. Without a restriction on the location of the car's charge port every charge station has to have a 25 foot long cord that must be maintained and properly stowed. If every car had its charge port in the center front, the station would only need a 6 foot cord. Because you could predict where the charge port will be on the next car.
Disregarding the butterflies in the console, it looks okay, stylish even… Unlike the faggotmobiles the other guys are proposing on introducing into the market.
Electric cars are the future, and Ford as well as other automakers know this to be true. I'm planning on purchasing this car, even though pitzicada with his very limited vocabulary doesn't agree! The main reason I believe he wants to knock this great car is because he knows he'll never be able to afford it, or anything like it on his pathetic salary as a delivery pizza driver.
When you talk bad about yours, it can damage their reputation. It is not funny. Ford has been building reliable cars for customers and fans for over a hundred years.
It all goes well... Until the power goes out and you can't get to work because your car is not charged. Then you get fired and are unable to pay for your car and then we are back to square one...

Gas? With half the recharge time of the Nissan Leaf, this is actually a car I would buy tomorrow, if it were available. The Leaf is a really nice car though.
BusterBunker 9 months ago
@BusterBunker Well if you're so worried, put solar panels on your house. Depending on where you live that could be problem solved. Which is the great thing about electric power, by the way: you can generate it yourself. Can't say that about gas.

Wow.
4632v 11 months ago
This will likely be my future daily commuter. Well done FORD. Well researched technology ahead of what any competition offers in an EV for the price. Again, value perfo (battery heating, cooling) mance Ford has come through. Looks great and allows me to get break free of the ridiculous tax at the pump the gov.'s apply in my area. Electricity is no issue where I live and it comes from a renewable source. Will the Gov.s act responsibly and provide solid tax credits? They should be!
4632v 11 months ago
Jeez, get over the electric cars already. They are stupid and just a fad with politicians and tree huggers. The limited range makes this nothing more then a niche machine. BTW, it takes fossil fuels to make the electric. Everyone goes electric and then there is a price hike in electric and you have to burn even more fuels to keep up with demand. Bio Diesel is the clear solution. Grow our fuel and no changing to experimental gizmos, but no special interest money to be made.
creeper711 11 months ago
@creeper711 Ridiculous comment. It takes fossil fuels to build other vehicles aswell. Have a look at the average commuting distance the vast majority of Americans and Canadians undergo to and fro from work and do the math. You will quickly realize how important EV's will be as a part of the solution. Your comments about stupidity should be directed towards yourself.
4632v 11 months ago
@4632v Current Diesel technology is already in existence and it takes nothing to convert them over to the fuel they were designed to use. Obviously you are clueless on how dangerously toxic battery technology is. Nor do you clue of the 10 year life span of the batteries in these cars. WHich then you'll have to dispose of the toxic batteries. People can produce fuel for diesel cars in their yards if need be. A diesel can go 600 miles on one tan. 23KW Battery @ 2.1lbs of coal per KW,
creeper711 11 months ago
@creeper711 One more reply to your uniformed response. Car batteries in fact are the most recycled waste product on the earth today, you heard of recycling? Where I live electricity is produced by a renewable resource, in fact we sell it to the USA aswell. Lithium ion batteries are a challenge but there will be many companies that will figure it out. How many 10yr. plus cars do you see on the road? Note I stated EV's are a part solution, Hopefull N Americans start to accept diesel..
4632v 11 months ago
@4632v Another clueless response. The ion batteries are not the ones recycled.. DUH !!! "will figure it out"? You hope. Let's try this - ELECTRIC produced mostly by COAL. Biodiesel produced by PLANTS. COAL = more pollution to dig it, transport it and then burn. Biodiesel grown locally, better yet straight veggie. Biodiesel cost controlled as machinery to harvest uses it's own grown product, ELECTRIC not cost controlled as coal cost rises, so does electric. You are clueless on energy.
creeper711 11 months ago
@creeper711 As a final addition to compensate for your obviously ignorant statements, Li-ion batteries as well as all other associated batteries have been mass recycled by for example a major european based company for close to a decade. They are a major global supplier and recycler of these batteries, do a quick google search, they have an excellent pdf posted, read and learn and keep your foolish commentary to yourself.
4632v 11 months ago
@4632v Okay one last time for your dumb ignorance. Ion battery recycling takes ENERGY. Energy to transport, energy to process(melting to avoid hazardous waste), Energy to refine, additional materials to process. SO, electric cars are nothing more then ONE BIG ENERGY SUCK and a really stupid idea appease some ignorant people like you. Then of course you're riding around in one big EF field. People are concerned with phones, but want electric cars.. Talk about dumb. BIO-DIESEL is the solution..
creeper711 11 months ago
@creeper711 Congratulations, you understand recycling takes energy, hopefully you understand the point of recycling, if not you must have missed the last few decades....As mentioned, no combustion which has many advantages and much savings in terms of all associated with combustion. As for cell phones your ignorance shines again, no relationship with batteries. I think you mean EMF, not EF, have you heard of shielding and stnadards that manufacturers must meet to market electrical items?
4632v 11 months ago
@4632v Okay dunce, Bio-diesel requires NO RECYCLING.. Get it....... Electric cars require a huge infrastructure to be built. With NO energy savings, once you add in all the other nonsense. You crack me up with your ignorance of EMF fields. How do you think these little electric cars get down the road? Shielding standards suck and can only do so much. I won't even go into the dangers of driving down the road with a high voltage battery under you butt.
creeper711 11 months ago
@creeper711 You are truly nuts. Biodiesel is fueling combustion GET IT? Growing plants (+opportunity costs) is never going to generate what is required, generating a clean power source through sustainable means currently exists and is growing. You research, we've been using affordable clean hydro power for many decades without issue. For the last time, EV's are part of the solution, specific application to largely reduce fossil fuel dependance. Batt manufacturer recycling infrastructure exists.
4632v 11 months ago
@creeper711 As for bio-diesel being the only solution you are clearly wrong, it is one of several. Is a combustion engine able to recycle part of its expended energy to recharge itself? NO. As EV's refine and develop they will be an important part of a cleaner planet with less use of resources to maintain them vs. combustion. For daily commuting they are an excellent addition. As for generating electricity that too will improve, we have hydro and with more wind and sea...
4632v 11 months ago
@4632v hydro..... HAHA !!! You truly are a dreamer and sucker for technologies that are not practical. Bio-diesel is a renewable source, the ultimate in recycling. Hydro... that is so funny....... I suggest you spend 5 minutes researching it and you'll see how stupid that is, even more so then dumb electric cars with very limited range. Hope you don't need your electric car in an emergency while it's discharged.
creeper711 11 months ago

MW. evalbumcom/2092.
martinwinlow 11 months ago
@niceboy60 - Except that petrol uses electricity to refine - in fact it uses more electricity than an EV will use to go the same distance as the ICE vehicle. As petrol & diesel is refined locally this would equate to a net saving in electricity. Then you have all the additional savings in moving and pumping the fuel here and there. Against this is the efficiency of the electric grid (not wonderful) and electric drive trains (about 70 to 90%), of course. The average ICE is only 20 - 30%. MW

Electric cars is not the future. Hydrogen cars is the future. Top Gear did a great review on that with the Honda Clarity a couple of years ago. =)
Denver542 1 year ago
@Denver542 Hydrogen cars are electric cars that use hydrogen fuel cells instead of batteries. Upside? they refill in 10 minutes instead of 25. Downside? you get nearly all of the electricity out of the batteries that you use to charge it. You only get half of the energy out of hydrogen that it takes to produce it.
Top gear is the best show ever, but never listen to them about anything green or fuel efficient. Even if it is captain slow's portion.

iDiggMGL 1 year ago 3
@shinyygengar Even if you park the car at -20C outside, the modern batteries are isolated and it will take more than 3 days for them to reach outside temperature. The current ALL-electric cars are city cars designed to be plugged when parked. Even at -20C cold, the car if plugged will receive a preheating from the plug's electricity, not the batteries and as such the battery will be in the correct temperature before you go. You can even order preheating by your mobile 5mins before you go.
TheusZeusDeus 1 year ago
@TheusZeusDeus I cannot stand hearing any more bollocks about cold, autonomy, off-roading and other such idiocies. If you have 7 kids you will need a mini-van, not a city-car. If you are a truck driver you need a diesel, not a gasoline. But if you are in a city, you need a city car. And electric vehicules ARE city cars.
According to researched 89% of drivers that drive everyday, make less than 50km per day!!! Their average speed is about 40km/hr!!!!! I.e. it is all about urban and suburban...
TheusZeusDeus 1 year ago
@TheusZeusDeus Manufacturers propose currently fully functional normal cars (i.e. with absolutely no comfort sacrificed, eg. radio system, air-condition, hydraulic steering etc. etc.) with electric motors and batteries that ensure a minimum of 150 km autonomy for a limited max speed of 130km (but this speed instantly reached in shorter acceleration times than gasoline cars). More than what an everyday use in and around the city will require. EVs will be the 2nd city car of the family.
