I miss STAR TREK, FARSCAPE, Space 1999. All that's on "TV" is crap, crap and more crap. I wonder how many really good shows never saw the light of day because some fat bastard has no vision or imagination... what a sad and fucked up world we live in.
A massive burst of acceleration, able to kick rthe moon out of our system, even if able to be caused be a nuclear explosion would have simply crushed the Moon Base.
@padawangussin1 Bergman says the ring of towers around Moonbase Alpha which stabilize their gravity inside the base at something similar to Earth normal is "compensating" and counteracting the G Forces. Ofcourse, we later learn that an indefinable God-like alien intelligence is behind their survival and even the accident may have been pre-planned because it is the Alphans' destiny to colonise space.
The big flaw with this show was the distances involved. Even with gravity boosts from the inner planets space probes take years to get even to satern etc. There is no way that Moon base alpha could have encountered any alein life unless there was a spacecraft entering the Sol system. I could never get pasthat to enjoy the show.
Very happy to hear they're finally making a new series (Space 2099). TV needs a good sci-fi opera! My only fear is that although is not a remake but re-imagining (like BSG,V,Star Trek) is that the networks will screw it up after one season. As long as it has the magic of the original series - without the gimmicks - such as great storytelling and great SFX then it sure will be a winner!
Interesting and believable characters and plot lines. Easier now to spot the signature craft of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson having seen much of their earlier works in the 1960s, but regret not following this series when it was being aired. My mother accused Barbara Baines' portayal of the doctor as being "such a robot," but I wonder if her delivery is intentionally rational, logical and unemotional to contrast the sexualized female cast in tight-fitting spacesuits in Star Trek.
I watched this show way back in 1975 and 1976. It was broadcast on our local ABC affiliate on saturday and sunday afternoons, whenever they felt like it. So I missed seeing alot of the episodes.
The first time i ever saw an episode of Space 1999 was on RTE on a Friday evening.RTE used to show this series every Friday evening i think it was in late Summer/Autumn of 1979.After the first episode Breakaway i was hooked on Space 1999.It was one of the most classic science fiction serieses ever made.Very believable and so haunting.Star Trek and other American science fictions would be like Jackanory in comparison.
I was 10 years old when this pilot aired. This was back in the days of syndicated television. Local VHF and some UHF channels would air this series. These were the days when cable was in it's infancy and satellite companies, like Dish and DirectTV, weren't even in existance. Heck, we didn't even have personal computers back then, let alone internet. No cell phones either and you had to be rich to have a phone in your car. Or James Bond.
Bring it back to TV. The original episodes. Bring back Twilight Zone, Tales from the Darkside and every other old series where it was about the story even the bad acting could be excused. Not this predigested pap that consists of reality TV shows and failing that special effects and soap opera drama. Plot: everyone who thinks about MB alpha dies, Koenig orders everyone not to think about it, Barbara E orders everyone to try Tony's beer to take their minds off it. Koenig is a lovable moron.
@oldfan517 and I loved it. I watched the original as a pre teen and the remake was much more believable. The overall storyline was great. It was a shame they cancelled Caprica.
I remember 1999. What a futuristic age that was. Now were driving around in gas powered cars and aren't even allowed on the moon. Who's to blame? Terrorists? Bush? War? Natural Disasters? Pollution? Obama? Bankers? The 1%?
I remember this show, but I thought it first aired Sept 13th,1974...I remember wanting to watch it on my b-day, on a friday the 13th, but my dad wouldn't let me...
@Tours1010732 the emotionless acting may have been influenced by the acting technique employed in stanley kubricks films, who was in turn influenced by the kuleshov effect.
As a kid, I loved this show. SPACE: 1999 was one of the few islands of genre in the broad, SF-empty sea of media that stretched from 1968 to 1977.
Even as a kid, however, I wondered at the strange, nearly-emotionless affect of the actors. It's like they were all dosed up on Benadryl the whole time. And of course the idea of the moon being blasted out of orbit by an explosion was and is silly. An explosion big enough to do that would blast the moon into sand. Still, great watching.
I am so happy you uploaded these episodes! I loved this show as a kid and I am happy as an adult to see them again. I am amazed how good the quality of production really was. The model work and sets are all excellent and the stories themselves are very good overall.
Excellent quality! Thank you so much for your hard work and effort in bringing great series like this one to life in the 21st century! I was about five or so last time I saw this show, and I still recall it even now! Seeing this as an adult gives me the impression that the most creative period on tv was the 70's.
@unclepatrick2 .. lol ... yeh i was out there :) ... just in case ! lol you never know ! :) .... Maybe it did happen and the moon we see today is an inflatable stand-in :)
@davidadamsawyer Yes I know David. That's another reason why the 1970's was fantastic. SPACE:1999 exemplified how people in those days cared for one another. There was more religeon in those days and you really felt like someone was caring for you and eachother.Thats why I always Loved this show since It 1st aired in September of 1975.
Man, this shows how good our News agencies and NASA are, the Moon got blown out of orbit 12 years a go, and we lost a Moon Base I didn’t know about and nothing was reported! We had to wait for a TV Show to find out! (LOVED IT BACK THEN!!)
I take it back Space 1999 sucked too. The Thunder Birds was much better than 1999.

We had so many great programmes as kids in the 70s and 80s. Now it's all celebrity shows and rubbish.

The new BSG had one message. The message was we're exactly like the mad muslim terrorists. That was the point of everyone being a Cylon.

Wish they'd remake this and U.F.O like they did with Battlestar Galactica.

@shauntbarry Why would you want that? They turned Battlestar Galactica into a soap opera with political infighting.
