This is one if not my best scene from the entire show because it shows how real gangster show love to their peoples. In todays society the term gangster is only use when violent things occur, but it much more than that, it having morals, principles and most paramount INTEGRITY
Avon and Cutty some real niggas for that, thats how you give back after taking so much from the hood. Stringer Bell jus takes from the hood while enriching himself he dont have the love for the hood like Avon do!!!
i know drugs were bad but i was really rooting for Avon to win the war and shit. im pretty sure if Stringer wouldve started his real estate business while Avon ran the drug game, Avon wouldve put the game to the side and spent a fortune for his community.
best legit business done by either string or avon, and with two sides of a coin. invest in youth, teach self defense that carries over into all aspects of life, and make better stronger more disciplined street soldiers. woulda worked out too if it wasn't for all the bullshit.
Why everyone hating on marlo. You don't get to be top man by not putting in work just like avon. If this show started when Marlo was like 13 it would show how he got to the top. Im sure he did some rather terrorist shit just like Avon.
Marlo is a punk. He's probably is somebody that got beatup as a kid and now wants to take his anger out on everybody. Marlo was mad that he lost a poker game so he starts beef with a security guard and kills a security guard.
@divinespeech12 10K aint a thing for Barksdale. In season 5 you can see Marlo having to struggle spending and putting his money somewhere when he was top dog. These guys earn ridiculous amounts of money.
This scene makes me cry every time I see it. The dimension of Avon's character from totally disinterested, to almost mocking Cutty to showing compassion and decency in one single moment is astounding! Complete perfection!
Cutty is by far and away my favourite character from the whole series. Understated, looking for a way to get good, but still understands his name and what he stood for, and who he stood with. He respected everybody before making a move, and when Avon simply granted him a way out of the game, it showed how much his name meant to the game. Love this dude
i love this scene, another example how they take away the good guy bad guy label, Avon the druglord and killer, helps out cutty with money for the gym and laughs when he "only" says 10 grand saying "you go through all that for 10K?" its like he was saying "you could of just asked without having to explain all that to convince me". and tells him to take care of the kids. this shows he has good qualities to him. shit the cops who were the "good" guys did bad shit too. show took away the labels.
@donnylorenzo you're right. i think they wanted people who were on the outside looking in to see there is no good and'bad in the streets. just people with intentions, whether they be good or bad. take avon: he was a drug lord who could order a hit out in an instant, yet he was not above giving cutty money so that those young boys could have something to look foward to besides the streets. unlike marlo he knew that the life he lived wasn't for everyone and he didnt think it made you less of a man
This was one of the funniest scenes... a great example of the disparity between being at the top and the bottom. 15k would have taken Cutty at least a year to get (if not more being an ex-convict) but Avon can give it up like it's change.
The guy playing Cutty does an excellent job of portraying a true, respectable OG in a neighborhood. Always looking out for the next generation, commanding respect, not demanding it.
I like Cutty. He's been there and done that. He's someone to look up to and respect. We need more guys like that to keep these kids from fucking up themselves in the hood
05-14-2011--- this scene is similiar to how i got the money start my boxing gym, except i pitched the idea to a C.E.O. of a top 100 company in the west suburbs of chicago.. we are now known as E.O.T.O. - THE EACH ONE TEACH ONE BOXING CLUB OF RIVER FOREST ILLINOIS.... keep the peace.....Benjiman Williams...
in this scene slim charles gives me the impression that he goes way back with avon; how he comments on avon's "noggen" remark; how is inside on avon's reaction to the amount of money asked for by cutty
avon, slim, bodie, cutty are stone cold killers, like soldiers in every war; marlo, chris, snoop are sociopaths, like hannibal lector
Bettter World: Avon sells his drugs in hamsterdam, gives a little back to the community, police worry about killers, thieves, rapists ect. Not perfect, but better then what we have now.
avon was good people despite is hardcore rep....stringer was a drama queen and a prick. avon could have easily written cutty off after he left the game but like true friends do he looked out for him. "nigga go through all that for 10,000"...gotta respect avons loyalty to his people.

This just shows how smart is Avon ... He knows that the money he's giving cutty is not a donation but an investment cuz those "lil niggas" will probably end up working for him as enforcers ...
@souf15 I see it differently. The scene is there to humanise Avon, to show his good side and how he looks after his own people. It's a contrast to the police/politician side of Baltimore who are all so career minded they are prepared to stab each other in the back and fuck each other over at the first chance they get. The viewer gets to see why people on the crime side chose to stay on the crime side, because there is love there as well as pain. You need to see Avon smile from time to time.
I think another reason why Avon let Cutty get out the game is cuz it ain't like he could snitch on him. Snitching on Avon would implicate himself which means Cutty would be going back to prison and you know he aint want that.

@goceltics339 That's what Stringer was trying to do in season 3. He said to Avon that they didn't need to care so much about having their names ring out on some ghetto street corner. But respect was what Avon cared about, more than the money
slim charles dat dude but he wasnt all that loyal to me cuz when avon got locked up he started runnin wit prop joe then he was kool wit marlo even tho avon was on bad terms wit them katz...and plus randy was his son
@hoodboi25 slim did what he had to do to survive. He was way smarter than given credit for. You notice he still around at the end of the show doing his thing. He went from being a soldier to a boss.
i admire the mutual respect between avon and cutty, it's a true gangsta to gansta moment in which stringer and prop joe can never attain as they both lack gangsta morals.
if this were the mafia, cutty would of been murdered for wanting to leave the game. avon is the man because he never forgets who helped him get where he is. shows avon has a heart, although he is a drug kingpin.
I love the look on Cutty's face. I'm so sorry the show is over, I got so attached to each and every one of those characters. I can't think of one I didn't want to succeed. Except maybe Royce or Davis. Everyone else? I love 'em all.
not true. 365 mil a year? thats doubtful too, but have you ever actually been to baltimore? the drug trade, not as unified as it looked in The Wire, overall accrues a much larger sum than 300x million of dollars annually. with the massive amount of real estate and other 'investments' these figures had going on, the Barksdale organization could've easily been making many millions annually.
Some of the most first hand research of incomes from the drug trade comes from Sudhir Venkatesh of Harvard (who basically lived with drug dealers for years) and Steven Levitt of U Chicago.
By their reports, average wages were as follows:
Vendors (ie. hoppers) are making below minimum wage, around $2400 a year.
Mercenaries (ie. muscles) made about $2000 a month during wartime.
Pit crew/tower chiefs could see 80-100k per year.
People in the board of directors made like over 100k.
@usafjeff I should not though that his paper was working off 1980's records. And also it doesn't probe anyone above the pit and tower chiefs who made about 100k.
So they couldn't get figures on people like Joe, Avon etc. I think the estimate for an average exec figure (ie. somebody in the coop) was like 300k but I may be pulling that number outta my ass. been a while
This scene really stands out in my memory, when i reflect on the whole show.

Cutty was one of my favorite characters. A straight out criminal turned to a better life in the long run. Shows that people can change.

whats the name of the movie?
uombo 2 years ago
@uombo This show is called The Wire, was on HBO
BigTone113 2 years ago
if this were the mafia, cutty would of been murdered for wanting to leave the game. avon is the man because he never forgets who helped him get where he is. shows avon has a heart, although he is a drug kingpin.

I love the look on Cutty's face. I'm so sorry the show is over, I got so attached to each and every one of those characters. I can't think of one I didn't want to succeed. Except maybe Royce or Davis. Everyone else? I love 'em all.

@ SpeakinAxiom, at most he was making a mil a month, no street dealer is making 365mil a year selling to the street. in a few neighborhoods.
onepunchmicky 2 years ago
not true. 365 mil a year? thats doubtful too, but have you ever actually been to baltimore? the drug trade, not as unified as it looked in The Wire, overall accrues a much larger sum than 300x million of dollars annually. with the massive amount of real estate and other 'investments' these figures had going on, the Barksdale organization could've easily been making many millions annually.
usafjeff 2 years ago
@usafjeff
People in the board of directors made like over 100k.
crazedmongoose2003 2 years ago 3
@usafjeff I should not though that his paper was working off 1980's records. And also it doesn't probe anyone above the pit and tower chiefs who made about 100k.
So they couldn't get figures on people like Joe, Avon etc. I think the estimate for an average exec figure (ie. somebody in the coop) was like 300k but I may be pulling that number outta my ass. been a while
crazedmongoose2003 2 years ago 4
I wonder how much Avon is worth overall. Obviously millions, but is it over 100 or what? With all those businesses he'd have to have a lot of cash.
AJW2184 2 years ago 4
I remember one episode near the beginning of the show saying he was making a mill a day.
