the most disturbing thing about Lucas is that i get the feeling that if he were given the choice to goback and undo/redo the original series or the prequels... i think he would choose the original.
He wants to make a series about some time travelers that go back to the clone wars to stop Anakin becoming Darth Vader, thereby cancelling out of the story of the originals.
what I've found with a lot of of Star Wars fans is that its all about not actually liking the films but loving everything to do with it, having to collect every thing no matter how shit and loving it. I can understand why some hardcore Star Wars fans might like the new trilogy but its sad at the same time.
@PatThePhat1 and also there the new fans who got introduced to it from the new films (manly kids) I don't think they would be as big as fan if it wasn't so commercialized and a big part of culture. If the new trilogy was just its own little series it wouldn't have been as popular.
Parts of PvGL were kind of boring. The part where they talk about the parodies of Star Wars was just complete filler. I understand that people loved Star Wars but that portion dragged on for too long IMO.
You know something that's Ironically good about George Lucas? I don't know if it's just me, but, knowing that a lot of people out there could easily write something better than George can, It makes me want to write more.
@MrCoolhand98 if its the old republic game ad. then it had nothing to do with lucas. the games are actualy exelent. bechose lucas had nothing to do with it.
I made the mistake of watching "Phantom Menace in 3 D". The 3 D was lousy, not three dimensional at all, the film was even more boring than in 1999, and Jar-Jar....oh my God. I had forgotten just HOW annoying he was! I feel abused by George Lucas now.
he didn't really abuse me...I just used it as a metaphor, what I meant was: I hate the Star Wars prequels. (because I LOVE the originals, minus the Ewoks, of course)
I can see future contracts include clauses stating "You may not delete me from this movie in the future and replace me with another actor..." Or "You cannot replace my musical in this movie with latest rap or rnb song" or "You are not allowed to take my handmade puppet and replace it with CGI, because I spent FUCKING YEARS MAKING THAT SHIT!!"
What if I own the rights to all of the beatles songs, can I chose to change them all to just me singing " na na na na na na naaa na" and refuse to let anyone ever buy or play the original songs? Why not? I own them, I get royalties of them, so why should I not be able to do whatever I want according to George Lucas? Or what about all studios that own movie rights, they can do what George did now. And don't say George is not just an owner he made it, he was a part of making them, not alone.
My point is George Lucas sets a dangerous presidence. Should everyone who works on movies today be scared that their work could be completly altered or removed years after being finished and released? So if George Lucas gives or sells me the rights to Star Wars can I just delete all editions of the movies, replace them with Jar jar binks dancing for 90 minutes and say "this is my vision" and only sell that version?
It is even more problematic with movies than a painting. A painting by one artist is one thing, when you talk about a movie you talk about 100'spossibly 1000's of artists and people working on it, not just one guy. What if someone got an oscar for special effects then his work gets changed or even replaced or just removed afterwards by whomever owns the right to royalties, I mean, can't that guy sue then? Lucas did not direct empire strike back, what happens legally if changes ALL of that movie?
Lucas would stop making the same star wars rehashed editions and such if we stopped buying them...I mean we complain so much but many of the same people complaining will go see the 3-D editions of the prequels anyway.
@standinstann i highly doubt Meyer misspelled "their". Also, as crappy as i think the remastered versions are, I dont believe that art belongs to everyone once its finished, that is just a stupid sense of entitlement by those incapable of producing their own art.
To your second, He didn't say that art belongs to everyone once it's finished. He said that 'artists' lose proprietary rights to their creations once they're finished. Meaning that the artist doesn't get to dictate the audiences impressions of the art , or go back, once the statue of David is complete, and cemented in the minds and culture of the population and say "you know what, I think he should have had a funny hat".
@standinstann i think we all can agree David wouldve wanted a bigger dong... but if you watch this movie youll see most of these people feel that star wars does belong to them and thats not the case, personally i didnt enjoy this film at all, it was 2 hours of fanboys bitching about shit youve heard for years, and of course that sense of entitlement just pissed me off, yeah Lucas ruined the movies but if anyones going to, should be him
@alistahr Oh, I should have said initially, I haven't seen the documentary, and if it's anything like you say, I get just as irritated by fanboyism as I do revisionism. Actually, RLM guy's got it wrong-- George may seem like he's very impartial to the whole thing, but he actually cares A LOT about his movies. In fact, he thinks they're going to go down in history as masterpieces, which is why he just had to go back and fix little details that annoyed him. Oddly though, he doesn't get what made them great. Can't he tell that Star Wars only got better when he had to collaborate? That his "original vision" would not have been enough to make it a hit?
@Yoshi5020 He certainly does, to the point of obsession. Do you think they're going to go down in history as masterpieces? IMO, the bar for fantasy has been raised beyond Star Wars in the last ten years.
Maybe not masterpieces, but certainly iconic, in the same way that Edgar Allen Poe's works are remembered even though he is considered to be a bad writer. I do think that 100 yrs from now, ppl will still be referring to Empire vs Rebels, Yoda and the Force, and Darth Vader's turn. There's another way Mike's wrong- Lucas set out from the very beginning to make a timeless mythology. However, these did not develop until the 2nd and 3rd movies, which says something...
@Yoshi5020 Yes, you're probably right. And the mythology did not really develop until Empire - if only one movie had been made it would not have had the same impact. Also, with ESB and ROTJ Lucas had a talented co-screenwriter and different directors, and ROTJ was his last movie to be edited by his wife. You can definitely see the influence. I think his ego swelled so much between 1983-1999 that he felt he didn't need anybody else's input anymore, with predictable results.
Actually I heard that he approached various people starting 1993-94 (original screenwriters, perhaps) wanting them to write the prequels, and that they all turned him down! They said, "George, I think you're the only one who can do this". At first this seems unbelievable, but in actuality it was probably because Lucas was being a Nazi about everything and insisting on bad ideas.
@Yoshi5020 Really? I believe you, but where did you hear that? I guess it's like how the 4th Indy movie was planned for the mid-90's but George kept saying he wanted aliens and also said: "It's my story or nothing." Only crazy people say stuff like that, as in, their story is more important than what the fans want.
@Yoshi5020 Its funny that you bring up the mythology developing in the 2nd and 3rd movies because he did not direct them which also says something. Lucas has said himself he isnt a good director, now he may just be humble about it but I do think he should write an autobiography as mentioned early in this video. It may clear things up for everybody who is curious
Yes, that's exactly what I was referring to, but there's not enough room in these Youtube comments! RE an autobiography, Mike wasn't joking when he said it would probably be mostly lies. Lucas has consistently lied about the history of Star Wars. Look up the fan-made ebook "The Secret History of Star Wars".
I honestly believe Lucas really had no real creative control during the pre-production, production, and post-production of the original movies, and that's why they were great. I recall that his earliest drafts for the story and characters were so off-base from their final depictions that it makes me wonder how any of it got off the ground in the first place, or why he was involved at all. Truly, the work was greater than the man who supposedly created it.
It's a sign that his genius as an idea individual has faltered. I don't know if it is age or something else... or maybe the title of "creator of Star Wars" has just done something to his head. There's no soul in the prequel movies. Many of the changes do harm towards the original movies.
It's just sad to see someone who could help create something like Star Wars fall. It's depressing to see skill die away. That's what I feel.
@yoshmaster5, I've come to the conclusion that (I think) the RedLetterMedia guy has come to. And that is the brilliance of the original trilogy and the magic of the story and characters didn't come from Lucas. A New Hope was saved by people who intervened in writing and editing and the other movies he had very little input on. The prequels showed just how little he truly understands story and character. He didn't change; I think he was this clueless all along and we gave him far too much credit.
Stop following the George Lucas path, and continuing your disregard and contempt for your audience.
I speak for most, when I say: Get back to Plinkett reviews, and shut down this bullshit, annoying "Half In the Bag" shit.
We understand that you wish to give your 'friends' some screen time. Well, you're giving them way too much screen time. They are not funny or entertaining. They are fucking dead weight and unnecessary distractions.
@Horoquin You absolutely don't speak for "most" of us. First off, Plinkett reviews probabaly take quite a while to make. And "most" of us certainly love Half in the Bag, although Plinkett is also great. Not to mention that this is all free content, so they're not obligated to give you something.
An actual STARGATE/PORTAL-THING was caught on film in New Mexico. The footage can be found within the short-film entitled "SUDDEN PORTHOLE", which is parked at the PROJECT CAMELOT YouTube page (it's under the George Noory video).
I'm not selling anything…I'm just trying to spread the word about the unseen-dimensions we find ourselves embedded in.
My BLOG contains peripheral data regarding the movie and is where I reply to the "debunkers" (use search words "SAM ZURICK" & "BLOG"). THANKS!!
It could be argued that tbe point at which a property like Star Wars becomes "owned by culture" might be when millions of fans have bought their ticket or rented or bought a copy. At least that's the moment George became a financial super-power and sometime after that went dog-nuts and started flipping us "the bird" and flinging his poop at us.
To separate the serious and good Star Wars stuff from the bad isn't hard. When I watch Empire, I just don't think of Vader's "NOOOOOOO!!!", why would I? And when I read a good book or a comic book that has stormtroopers in it, I don't focus on the fact that they are useless, bumbling idiots in the Original Trilogy.
The true madness of George Lucas is in his unwillingness to let people choose. He has every right to continue making whatever changes he wants to his works until he drops, but he can't force people to love his "perfect vision" by denying access to the originals. I don't think Lucas really understands how people work.
@ObakeOnna So now he's "denying access to the originals"? If you are so intent on watching the originals, then just pop in your old VHS tapes and watch them. God damn.
@rpsmith014 I'll just quote Lucas himself on the subject and then shut up about it. Make of this what you will:
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you'll be able to project it on a 20' by 40' screen with perfect quality."
@ObakeOnna I can see how for fans who feel as you do about the films, this would be upsetting, and I myself don't like it either, but you have to understand Lucas' perspective. Star Wars was his creation, so all he wants to do is make it exactly how he wants it, which is understandable. Even if it's for the worst.
@rpsmith014 that's fine he can do that....but look what Ridley Scott did with Blade Runner. He made the final cut, and told everyone that it was his preferred version of the film, but he also released all the other versions because his goal was to give the viewer the film in whatever form they prefer...I'm fine with Lucas giving me his intended vision, but that's not my Star Wars. Give the viewer choice.
@nevskireviews I really disliked the inner-monologue/sam spade/detective noire convention crap they added with Harrison Ford talking to himself/the audience in otherwise quiet scenes. That was my biggest contention with Scott's changes because it implied that we are not smart enough to understand what might be going through Deckard's mind at those times he's thinking while he works. Scott resorted to telling us rather than showing just for some extra content that had no bearing anyway.
@gregtestagent He was forced to add the voiceover by the studio. They thought the audience wasn't smart enough. He removed it in the Final Cut, 2007, which I own and IMO is the way you 'fix' movies. The voiceover gone plus a few well-thought out changes here and there.
I hate the star wars prequels. In fact, I hate everything Star Wars now because it's everywhere, over-saturated and done to death. I can't watch any kind of comedy show without a star wars reference. But for all my hate for Lucas, I can't help but see the irony in that both of these guys have come to mild prominence for nothing more then questioning someone else's work. Without the prequels, RLM would be a basement business, and Alexandre would remain obscure. Reminds me of that obi-wan quote.
Its ridiculous to say, but Its obvious that George Lucas does not understand Star Wars at all. He kills the Magic, the Feeling, the Heart of Star Wars.... and that's sad.
@DasHinchen It's nearly impossible to create a film that feels the same as one created in 1977. Times change, and Star Wars suffered from that. It just wasn't meant for this era. Film has changed, but Star Wars couldn't adapt to it.
People, just buy the Limited Editions. They're not actually hard to find at all, usually aren't more than 25-30$ and it's a 2-disc set; the 2nd disc is a transfer of the unaltered Laserdisc Widescreen edition!
Sure, the image is not 100% sharp and the sound is stereo only, but it's the closest thing you can get, since the original Technicolor negative faded.
I don't understand why Lucas hasn't thought of it in terms of da Vinci coming back to life (8:44). Seems to me I read somewhere that he likes Norman Rockwell. How would he like it if Rockwell somehow burst into his living room and said, "well, I always intended for there to be a bunch of fireflies in the corner of this painting, but I didn't have time before, so sorry, George, I don't care how much you like my painting the way it is, I'm changing it."
Hi, my name is George Lucas, and I just wanted to say... go F@#$ your selves. I can do whatever I want with my F$Ck!%@ movies. I can care less what you two A@@wholes think or say about my films!!!! BTW, love you reviews!
RLM i love u guys but why is this on machinima? Machinima followers who stumble across this are going to unfairly thumbs down. Also why is one part on the website and one on machinima?
@MarkArandjus Oh and Mr. Lucas told The late great Irvine Kirshner "It'll be your film". About Empire easily the best film in the series. Not mention this little quote by Lucas himself "I am very concerned about our national heritage, and I am very concerned that the films that I watched when I was young and the films that I watched throughout my life are preserved, so that my children can see them."
@Pwells1 Just watched the credits and they both say that Kasdan wrote the screenplay and Lucas wrote the story, so... your logic is 'they're not his films, because he didn't write the dialogue even though he decided how the events would play out with his characters and and produced the films'?
I'm sure you know movies are a group effort, so just because you don't do everything doesn't mean it's not also your film from an artistic perspective (and form a legal perspective they are Lucas' films).
@MarkArandjus The point is, hiding behind the current law as a justification for what Lucas is doing is just plain moronic, especially when you yourself agree it would "probably be better" if Lucas didn't have the ability to change them.
Perhaps this is Machinima's attempt at branching off to include other forms of entertainment besides video games. I guess they're going to start uploading movie content as well.
I find this video of two guys talking about Star Wars more entertaining than... most things anymore. Very, very entertaining, even thought-provoking stuff. Just hearing the RLM guys going back and forth on movies, their thoughts, good and bad, is one of my favorite things anymore. Great, great stuff.
And thanks for posting on YouTube, cuz I do NOT like Blip. Runs like shit on my computer, unfortunately, so yay for YouTube!
okay...so, ever since i was a kid i noticed what looked, to my mind, like two "jawa eyes" behind R2D2, screen left. this is exactly where "mad king george" has added the digi-rocks. i wonder if this screen artifact nagged him into a fit of OCD that only adding new rocks could calm...
"I can't look at Darth Vader the same anymore, he's become a cartoon character"
I hate when people use the phrase "cartoon character" with a negative connotation. Don't we like cartoon characters? I know I do. Cartoons are a huge part of popular culture.
@MaxGilardi There's nothing wrong about cartoon characters in and of themselves. A better way of saying it is that Vader has been reduced to a childish caricature. The character we knew and loved has been completely neutered as a legitimate villain because of his hammy origin story. Badass Vader was at some point the "Are you an angel?" kid.
why was r2d2 turned into cgi in the blu ray????? why????????????????? they want to turn robot r2 into fake cgi r2???? my mind has been blown on how fucking horrible it was
That new R2-D2 shot pretty much sums up the nature of most changes. Pointless, illogical bullshit that are so ridiculously inconsequential that you wonder why they even bothered.
@Strand0410 George bothered because he can't leave well enough alone. And I think that's important to understand about him, that he's really not a filmmaker in the same sense as his contemporaries like Spielberg and Scorsese. He's a technician, a tinkerer. He likes the technical aspects of filmmaking, but he has no sense for storytelling.
As far as I'm concerned? Lucas can re-release and change "Star Wars" all he wants. All I ask is that the original, un-altered films get a proper, full force re-release. Widescreen, remastered, the works. Until then, I think its unfair to deprive the fan base and the bigger culture of the original work.
I mean, even when Spielberg changed "ET" (which he says he regretted doing), he never once considered taking the original version off the shelves.
I knew "George Lucas" was going to barge in and it *still* made me jump.

Also, with ESB and ROTJ Lucas had a talented co-screenwriter and different directors, and ROTJ was his last movie to be edited by his wife. You can definitely see the influence. I think his ego swelled so much between 1983-1999 that he felt he didn't need anybody else's input anymore, with predictable results.
squamish4244 2 months ago
@squamish4244
Yoshi5020 1 month ago
@Yoshi5020 Really? I believe you, but where did you hear that? I guess it's like how the 4th Indy movie was planned for the mid-90's but George kept saying he wanted aliens and also said: "It's my story or nothing." Only crazy people say stuff like that, as in, their story is more important than what the fans want.
squamish4244 1 month ago
@Yoshi5020 Its funny that you bring up the mythology developing in the 2nd and 3rd movies because he did not direct them which also says something. Lucas has said himself he isnt a good director, now he may just be humble about it but I do think he should write an autobiography as mentioned early in this video. It may clear things up for everybody who is curious
Konatablob 1 month ago
@Konatablob

Honestly, my reaction is just one of sadness.
That's what I feel.
yoshmaster5 3 months ago

ObakeOnna 5 months ago 9
@ObakeOnna So now he's "denying access to the originals"? If you are so intent on watching the originals, then just pop in your old VHS tapes and watch them. God damn.
rpsmith014 3 months ago
@rpsmith014 They still make VHS players? I haven't had one since the last one broke down a couple of years ago.
ObakeOnna 3 months ago
@ObakeOnna No they don't make them new, but they're easy enough to get if you really want one.
rpsmith014 3 months ago
@rpsmith014 I'll just quote Lucas himself on the subject and then shut up about it. Make of this what you will:
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you'll be able to project it on a 20' by 40' screen with perfect quality."
ObakeOnna 3 months ago
@ObakeOnna I can see how for fans who feel as you do about the films, this would be upsetting, and I myself don't like it either, but you have to understand Lucas' perspective. Star Wars was his creation, so all he wants to do is make it exactly how he wants it, which is understandable. Even if it's for the worst.
rpsmith014 3 months ago
@rpsmith014 that's fine he can do that....but look what Ridley Scott did with Blade Runner. He made the final cut, and told everyone that it was his preferred version of the film, but he also released all the other versions because his goal was to give the viewer the film in whatever form they prefer...I'm fine with Lucas giving me his intended vision, but that's not my Star Wars. Give the viewer choice.
nevskireviews 2 months ago
@nevskireviews I really disliked the inner-monologue/sam spade/detective noire convention crap they added with Harrison Ford talking to himself/the audience in otherwise quiet scenes. That was my biggest contention with Scott's changes because it implied that we are not smart enough to understand what might be going through Deckard's mind at those times he's thinking while he works. Scott resorted to telling us rather than showing just for some extra content that had no bearing anyway.
gregtestagent 2 months ago

LeahWayEarth 5 months ago
Its ridiculous to say, but Its obvious that George Lucas does not understand Star Wars at all. He kills the Magic, the Feeling, the Heart of Star Wars.... and that's sad.
DasHinchen 5 months ago
@DasHinchen It's nearly impossible to create a film that feels the same as one created in 1977. Times change, and Star Wars suffered from that. It just wasn't meant for this era. Film has changed, but Star Wars couldn't adapt to it.

When you teach children's art class, the most important thing is when to take the art away from the child and say it's finished.

It's kind of the old joke "How many artists does it take to paint a picture?" Two. One to paint the picture, and the other to tell him when to stop.
kekort2 5 months ago
I don't understand why Lucas hasn't thought of it in terms of da Vinci coming back to life (8:44). Seems to me I read somewhere that he likes Norman Rockwell. How would he like it if Rockwell somehow burst into his living room and said, "well, I always intended for there to be a bunch of fireflies in the corner of this painting, but I didn't have time before, so sorry, George, I don't care how much you like my painting the way it is, I'm changing it."

The funny thing is George Lucas did not even direct The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. So how can they be HIS films?
chadrageus 5 months ago
@chadrageus Because he produced and wrote the script and they're his characters?
MarkArandjus 5 months ago
@MarkArandjus Oh and Mr. Lucas told The late great Irvine Kirshner "It'll be your film". About Empire easily the best film in the series. Not mention this little quote by Lucas himself "I am very concerned about our national heritage, and I am very concerned that the films that I watched when I was young and the films that I watched throughout my life are preserved, so that my children can see them."
chadrageus 5 months ago
@chadrageus Doesn't matter; his story & characters, wrote the script, produced the film, it's partially his film no matter what he said.
MarkArandjus 5 months ago
@MarkArandjus Actually, he didn't write the scripts for Empire or Jedi...
Pwells1 5 months ago
@Pwells1 Um... yes he did, where did you get that idea?
MarkArandjus 5 months ago
@MarkArandjus From actual history, and the film's credits. Kasdan wrote the scripts.
Pwells1 5 months ago
@Pwells1 Just watched the credits and they both say that Kasdan wrote the screenplay and Lucas wrote the story, so... your logic is 'they're not his films, because he didn't write the dialogue even though he decided how the events would play out with his characters and and produced the films'?
I'm sure you know movies are a group effort, so just because you don't do everything doesn't mean it's not also your film from an artistic perspective (and form a legal perspective they are Lucas' films).
MarkArandjus 5 months ago
@MarkArandjus Unless we go by the law Lucas proposed in 1988, whereby films would belong to the Director and Lead Screenwriter...
Pwells1 5 months ago
@Pwells1 If that were the case (and it'd probably be better) then they wouldn't legally be his films.
If.
MarkArandjus 5 months ago
@MarkArandjus The point is, hiding behind the current law as a justification for what Lucas is doing is just plain moronic, especially when you yourself agree it would "probably be better" if Lucas didn't have the ability to change them.
Pwells1 5 months ago
@Pwells1 Actually the original point was "So how can they be HIS films?"
So to recap: he played a major role in making them and he owns them legally.

MaxGilardi 5 months ago
@MaxGilardi There's nothing wrong about cartoon characters in and of themselves. A better way of saying it is that Vader has been reduced to a childish caricature. The character we knew and loved has been completely neutered as a legitimate villain because of his hammy origin story. Badass Vader was at some point the "Are you an angel?" kid.

@Strand0410 George bothered because he can't leave well enough alone.
