It's like Firefox and Chrome. Chrome might browse faster, but only because it's taken longer to boot and eaten more resources to do so. The rest of the computer therefore has less to work with, making it a less desired program for multitasking/hyperthreading
Also, Vista is like a rock, or at least it sunk like one, leaving linux to still function as usual for many more hours

Anyways I'm not trolling I'm stating fact. I had a machine running Vista on 8GB and one running Linux on 512 MB and I was surprised how closely they performed in speed. Shocking really.
As someone who is replacing even the kids gaming vista with 64 bit linux, am3 virutalization supported, 8 gigs ram, so half and half in vmware player, to ensure that the couple of silly programs I can't get going in wine (wow works in wine, and others but oovoo and lmvu doesnt), but able to contain the virus window in the secure box it needs containing in, having used linux for years, LINUX IS FAST and SECURE. But they're not all grass roots, some are anaconda, control freaks, S group.
On a serious note, you can't really say either is faster. Linux is not comparable to Vista because Linux is NOT an OS, it is just a kernel. Operation speed differs per distro, and greatly depends on the window manager you're using and which daemons are running.
In my case though (I happen to use both systems regularly), time from GRUB to logged in and fully responsive on the same box: - Vista: ~260 seconds - Arch Linux (with xdm/awesome): 17 seconds - Linux From Scratch (just tty): 7 seconds

It's all about the hardware, in my experience. I'm glad I skipped Vista and went straight to 7. I use both 7 and Lucid. Lucid runs on a desktop with 0.5G or less RAM, and it is not much faster than XP was before I reformatted its hard drive. It is much more secure, which I appreciate. No IE to worry about. On the other hand, I have 7 running on a laptop with 6 times more RAM, and it runs like a BMW. I can have over 15 tabs on my favorite browser open without a problem.

A bad design is a bad design no matter what you run it on. Well, that's definitely not true. Linux developers are at the mercy of whatever company makes the hardware, and most of these companies are run by people who only care about "the bottom line", er actually, Money. They don't make good drivers for Linux because it's not profitable.

There are a lot of different kinds of Linux, as it's open source, meaning ANYONE can edit the code and improve it. One of these linux distributions that's incredibly popular is Ubuntu, and I would recommend starting there. You can select between the two when booting up your computer. (I might wait for 11.04 Ubuntu to come out though so you won't miss GNOME, just wait a few days)

@TheAmeerx i fight the RKs because even if one has 6GB of ram, he doesn't want it to be filled w/ 5GB of RKs...
oh and no, i'm comparing a very expensive, closed source, bloated, insecure OS to one of the more advanced OS...
because I define an advanced OS by it's features, not it's animations, as microsoft does. sure you have more work w/ most linuxes to get it exactly do what you want, but that's better then having a OS that installs in 5min and then simply doesn't allow you to do some things.

and talking about the GUI, not the Animations which windows 7 lack compared to the OSx, yes the OS is about the features not the animations!
plus not all users should be messing around with all the system files, cause not all are at the same level of experience.

@TheAmeerx actually, my 12yo brother installed LinuxMint 9 two years ago, and is still using it efficiently, but that's not the point.
also, i did not talk about the gui animations w7 doesn't have, but about those it has by default, which are too many imao.
i don't think windows is worse than linux. it's different. imao it depends on what the user expects. windows is great for gaming, office, browsing, but i like my system to do exactly what i tell it, nothing more or less, and linux does that.

Хотя если из винды выкинуть все лишнее и по разумному переписать дрова, то она будет хорошей платформой для игр (или скупым подобием на Linux). Вот только если игры и вправду перейдут на Sony PlayStation и Xbox то нафиг такая без идейная ОС нужна.

It's all about the hardware, in my experience. I'm glad I skipped Vista and went straight to 7. I use both 7 and Lucid. Lucid runs on a desktop with 0.5G or less RAM, and it is not much faster than XP was before I reformatted its hard drive. It is much more secure, which I appreciate. No IE to worry about. On the other hand, I have 7 running on a laptop with 6 times more RAM, and it runs like a BMW. I can have over 15 tabs on my favorite browser open without a problem.

@jasonc0065 Your argument is citing Moore's law about hardware increasing 27% in performance every six months. It doesn't apply to being smart about your software. A bad design is a bad design no matter what you run it on. Most of the tolls really apply to being able to hand down the source code to subsequent programmers who don't have to know everything and can focus on doing something that is more advanced than would be possible for a lone programmer.

@amdphreak I was not citing Moore's law. I was commenting on recent experience. I have run Linux systems that suck and Windows 7 systems that rock. I'm not blame Linux, I'm blaming the hardware that it's on. Both Microsoft and Linux developers are free to take advantage of better hardware.

Well, that's definitely not true. Linux developers are at the mercy of whatever company makes the hardware, and most of these companies are run by people who only care about "the bottom line", er actually, Money. They don't make good drivers for Linux because it's not profitable.

@heaheaheaa Linux is a Kernel, which is, simply put, the bridge between your OS/Software and the Hardware. There are a lot of different kinds of Linux, as it's open source, meaning ANYONE can edit the code and improve it. One of these linux distributions that's incredibly popular is Ubuntu, and I would recommend starting there. You can select between the two when booting up your computer. (I might wait for 11.04 Ubuntu to come out though so you won't miss GNOME, just wait a few days)

Vista is slower than Linux even windows 7 is slower but I would go for it as Linux is mainly for student who want to learn more about computers and windows is user friendly and easy to use for everyday work.
