This is one of the coolest videos I've seen in a long time, tho I can't QUITE figure out if you're using ASL or CSL? (And is there a difference, at that, between Mandarin SL or Cantonese SL? I'm just learning Mandarin, and that's hard enough... ASL I've been exposed to my whole life, but was never taught (am teaching myself, now, so it's slow going)... I've always been impressed by Sign languages. Such an amazing skill.

This is the first time I've seen Chinese sign and I enjoyed watching. Frankly I like it a little more than Japanese sign because an iconographic language fits very well with the notion of sign languages in general. While Japanese is iconographic, they also maintain a syllabary that causes some chaos in learning the "fingerspelling".

I'm deaf but can still hear (need the volume really high!), I understand a little that you're saying deaf aren't mute, being called mute can be insulting at times. The index finger = deaf, the pinkie finger = mute.
Mute is someone (even that can hear 100%) who usually has a part of their brain of which can't learn and use speach motor skills.

there is tons sign language that is different. can look up all different sign language on google. ASL is mine but i can understand some of what said in her video still.

I don't know Chinese Sign Language, but I read some of the comments before I watched the video, and I can see by her body language what she's trying to get at. Using the index finger for the sign is more respectful and if they use it enough it will catch on and eventually get put down in the books. Really, that's how a language changes, including signed languages: somebody decides to change something or make something up and other people use it, and it just sticks. I hope her mission succeeds!!
She is talking about how in Chinese language, 聋哑, used as a word to describe deaf people, actually means deaf-mute. While most deaf people are not mute, this is inappropriate. She suggest to change the wording as a sign of respect for deaf people.

She is talking about how in Chinese language, 聋哑, used as a word to describe deaf people, actually means deaf-mute. While most deaf people are not mute, this is inappropriate. She suggest to change the wording as a sign of respect for deaf people.

hey, I'm deaf, and I'm trying to guess what she's saying.
I can catch similarities between American Sign Language (ASL) and Chinese Sign Language (CSL). my guess is that she's talking about the sign for the word "deaf" itself?
She signs "deaf" with her pinkie first and then rants a bit.
then she signs it with her index finger later, i assume thats the way she would rather sign deaf, because I've been told that signs with the little finger are generally belittling.

Deaf people do not always expect special treatment but we do expect some treatment for us like if we dont understand what the hearing person say, we expect them to find another way to tell us what they r trying to tell us. Most people think we are mute... no we are not. We do talk in Deaf Voice as we talk.

I think it's interesting because it must be very different in Chinese to communicate this way because many of the same words have different meanings depending on the high and low pitches within each word. That's probably why she's using so much body language when doing this. Either way I admire her for being able to do this. It's amazing to me actually.

well to be honest the is video means sweet didly squat to me because one i only sign basic BSL, two the subtitles are in another language and not english and three i cant lipread a language i dont speak, and so not really functional, all things considered though i guess its useful for those at whom it is directed.
