Some restaurants in smaller developed countries like Japan run their entire restaurant off of bio diesel energy created just from the waste generated by the consumers that eat there and the byproducts of food production, such as grease and oil and such. It is actually quite effective as an energy source and in some cases the restaurants can actually sell energy back to the grid. Talk about being self sufficient!

those that say using a food crop for fuel sets up competition between food in poor countries and fuel in rich countries could be true in some cases and yes In some poor countries the rising price of vegetable oil is causing problems. But if the fuel was only being made from non-edible vegetable oils like camelina, jatropha or seashore mallow which can thrive on marginal agricultural land where many trees and crops will not grow, or would produce only low yields then the biodiesel would be great!

Biodiesal is evil! Soybean farmers in the states are converting to corn to meet this biofuel demand. In order to compensate for the loss in soybean production farmers in south america are tearing down the amazon rainforest to create more farmland, as the soybeans will be a reliable source of income for the south american farmers. There are also food shortages in many thrid world countries commencing because of biodiesal, as it is more profitable to sell crop to a fuel company than as afoodsource
