  • They filmed this scene take after take and each time Gyllenhal filled the role of DOnnie better and better simply due to how well he performed the previous run.

  • So sad.

  • what the hell is LTR?

  • @Jimisawesomeblog ltr is a liquid drum & bass artist. He uses this quote in flashback

  • LTR sent me

  • YOOOOOOOOOOOO DOING IT BIG YOUTUBE

  • No other actor could have pulled off what Jake did.

  • Too bad, the fellas in hollywood forgot to direct movies like this one a long time ago.

Now, back to the 25th summer blockbuster love movie..

  • LTR

  • @xKarvey damn right :D

  • I laugh at all these people looking too deep into something that isn't even there, this movie is in no way about god or Donnie's thoughts, belief, etc. regarding god. Stop taking shit out of context.

  • @jesuisapoopie1 Ummm, what? How is it in no way about God? This ONE scene literally talks about God. SEVERAL scenes relate about finding God. The whole movie is about following God's path in the end. How is it "taking shit out of context" when it makes several statements about beliefs and God? The whole point of this type of movie is to make you think deep... and, in my opinion, it's one of the best at doing it.

  • @kjhovey I know there are conversations between the characters about God, when I said that I was referring to those who took the movie in a very religious manner other than what was intended because they themselves are religious. The movie is about time travel, I could go into it if you don't already know but that would take much to long and I'm lazy, so yeah....bye

  • @jesuisapoopie1 I know it's about "time travel", that's the most obvious thing about the movie. The movie's meaning is up for debate, but God (or the thought of God) plays a pretty huge roll in it in most people's interpretations. It mentions it plenty of times. I personally think it's about a loop hole and Donnie was leading down a path not designed by God. He was afraid of dieing alone, but ended up "finding" God, and realized he wasn't dieing alone from that plane.

  • This scene can really reach a lot of people because its something a lot of us go through. The search for God is a necessary part of our lives. Even if you have had religion shoved down your throat or have doubted the existence of God for your whole life there is always going to be an infinite amount of possibilities in this universe and beyond it. Donnie literally finds his way in the end and realizes that even though he can see his path and has a choice, he can still follow Gods path in life

  • Donnieeee<3

  • This movie blows my mind every time I see it. I am religious and try to be a good Christian...mainly because if Christianity never came to my life, I would've died alone a long time ago.

  • @job489

So, not because you actually believe in the dogma's of Christianity, but out of fear?

  • @GnomesAmok

More that it helped me when I was depressed and about to kill myself when I was 13.

  • i feel for donnie...love him...

  • heyy guys my friend made a great song to this /user/ltr94#p/u/1/Vi2ZAqJxYFI

  • i watch this movie all the time, and i fucking love it. i find it crazy that i never get tired of it. ive watch both versions with and without commentary. i feel such a strong connection to this movie. its funny that i feel like im best friends with donnie or jake, cuz im always seeing him lol. watching this movie oddly puts me at peace. Best fcking movie ever

  • No one wants, Donnie.

  • lold @ the grunge face in the background xdd

  • before you think about it, you should first clear your mind on the defintion of the word "alone".

  • - The search for God is absurd?

    - It is, if everyone dies alone.

  • This scene really tears me apart... Such an amazing movie... and Donnie Darko would be the fucking perfect man! I'd married him if he was real :P

  • For me, the linear(?) plot of the movie isn't what it's about. It's about Donnie and how he responds to the situation, about the struggles of an intelligent young man with the world collapsing about him, desperately trying to make sense of it all, where there is no sense. This scene shows that perfectly.

I'm not saying there isn't a plot, or that the plot isn't intelligible after a few runs through, I'm saying the plot is secondary to the film.

  • I did a dubstep remix of this scene. it's called "To Be Alone" check it out if you want to and tell me what you think! :)

  • so people think death is the end then why does every near death experiance show the same thing and what about ghosts they arent scientific but they are there what about the fact that on the taurin shroud is blood that is an unknown substance even to this day to mankind why do people try so hard to disbeleive in something after death when its so much eaysier to just beleive and be happy and not fear death

  • @legend956 Im sorry are you seriously saying ghosts are real? How many times have you seen a ghost? Can you show some pics, any videos that prove beyond a reasonable doubt that ghosts are real? I love what you say "it is so much easier to just believe and be happy" This is exactly why I don't believe in God or religion or anything along those lines. Heaven is just a made up place for people who are afraid to die. Plain and simple.

  • @TheC33 can one truely live if one only sees death and if the only thing that offers an option to death would exsist only in story would not one seek that option as fictitious as it may be rather then the inevitable cold fact that would focus ones mind on death and prevent one from truely enjoying life many choose life as do i

  • @legend956 LOL

  • @TheC33 lol indeed my friend

  • I love him :)

  • You could have 100+ friends on Facebook, a circle of 7 of your closest friends, your only one true best friend, your love, your family, and when you die, even if you had all of your friends and family around your deathbed, superficial or intimate, you'd still be dying alone.

  • @SuperPandas

Yeah and hopefully sooner rather than later if it's someone off facebook. :P

  • @SuperPandas unless you die during a nuclear bomb explosion.

  • i saw this movie with a bunch of friends and even the guys said awwww at this part hahahaha

  • @MrParadoZia

I think nobody on earth understands Donnie Darko

  • @TheAntiChr1st don't be too deterministic, Mr. Smarty Pants. I've done quite a bit of reading on the subject (Hawking, Jastrow, Dawkins, Sagan) and I've come close to having a better understanding of the film, but no, not COMPLETELY understood... yet understanding is attainable, don't you forget.

  • @strokesfan1107

Donnie Darko is about 80's music and America during the presidential elections of 1988.

    -

Among others. It's also about a schizophrenic kid, and his struggle in 'normal' society. It's not really important whether what's happening is real.

  • @TheAntiChr1st weell.. those are a couple of periphery elements of the movie, yeah. that's it's style. but the STORY, and PLOT are of the collapse of the universe, and Donnie figuring out how to set things right again.

you seem to be a bit focused on the aesthetics.

  • @strokesfan1107 <--- What he said

  • Great movie

  • This was definitely one of the scenes from the movie that was the most powerful and memorable..

  • @devrayy Agreed. This is one of the most emotional scenes i have ever seen in a movie.

  • born alone, die alone

  • So much wisdom in this movie. Even without any ofthe scifi mystery time-travel stuff, just as a character piece, it's one of the best films ever made.

  • @Spectic actualy alot of the stuff in this movie is backed up with the theory of the multiverse

  • I don't know, Training Day came out the same year this did and Denzel did a better job at acting than Jake Gyllenhaal. Either though I love this movie.

  • @xMaBrosx oh god Training Day...fucking kick ass movie...one of my top ten ever

  • love this ending !!!

  • Damnitt I've passed this movie up on Cable ten times. I wish I would have Dvrd it.

  • I still don't 100% get this movie!

But I think that's why I kinda like it!

  • @Bowmaj21 Same here, I feel the same way about this movie and Inception and 2001 A Space Odyssey.

  • Sadly, I haven't seen either of those movies!

    But I hope to, someday!

  • Jake Gyllenhaal should have won an Oscar for this role.

  • @Dukeobelding Or at least nominated...

  • @Dukeobelding only one? But you're right

  • @Dukeobelding 100% Agree!

  • @Dukeobelding nomination (YES) Oscar...iffy Johnny Depp in Blow, Russelle Crow in A Beautiful Mind, Denzel Washington in training Day

  • Happy Days - Dying Alone Done....

  • @CyrusOnline "Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" Douglas Adams

  • Why do people keep talking about faith as if it's a good thing? To think something is real despite having no proof (or perhaps even because there is no proof) and only because you want to think it's there is just down right delusional. To think unicorns are real because someone said so and because they say they're invisible and undetectable is absurd and people will say that that isn't the same thing but it is. People will delude themselves because "I don't wanna be alone." applies to everyone.

  • @yetanotherone1234567 100% on you with this

  • It was about love conqueroring the fear of death, the fear of dieing alone which we all have. This was actually also a modern re-write of the Gospel, which should be apparent.

  • It seems to me a mistake to try to scientifically prove religious beliefs and vice versa. It's just possible that neither has all the answers, and moreso they both have such divergent aims that to do so would subvert the meaning of both. If u want to believe in a God, gods, or no god, it shouldn't be of any difference to me unless you're using that belief to restrain my freedom. If ur need 2 have others believe as u believe before u can have faith is so strong, maybe u don't have faith at all

  • @tomblack2112 right on man.

  • The counter-argument of an "undesigned designer" eh? "that which created us needs to have been created... eh? So then tell me exactly why is it that there is 'something' as opposed to 'nothing'? Why does this 'logic' that you use to debunk God even have place in your mind? Why does your brain associate things so complexly that you can convince yourself that even though you are here, there is nothing greater than you, or the universe? It would seem atheists have just as much to prove as a theist.

  • I know by INSTINCT that because there is a Earth and sun, Universe, Mystery, Beauty, Fundamental forces of reality, Physics, Music, Art! These things are evidence of The Almighty, for those with 'the right kind of eyes' every iota of matter and energy in the universe is extensive proof of the love and Compassion of God. I am a Monotheist, but with interest and daily study in Biology and physics and I look at everything at a scientific p.o.v. and STILL! I see his love and compassion every moment.

  • @CyrusOnline The problem is your whole argument is circular. It only has any weight if you accept the assumption that god exists. It's like saying you know the bible is true, because the bible says so ...or trusting a person when they tell you they aren't lying.

    In simplified form:

    1. God exists - he is beautiful and mysterious

    2. Everything in the world exhibits what I perceive as beautiful and mysterious

    3. Everything in the world was created by God

    It's like a tautology... (i.e. pointless)

  • Comment removed

  • @CyrusOnline So basically you are using the teleological argument. I've been through this one many times and it has several problems, but the most significant is that by the very logic of the argument it demands orderly, complex things are intelligently created, but this would also necessitate a being such as God having an intelligent creator, and it produces nothing but an infinite regress that ultimately fails to explain the origin of complexity altogether...

  • okay sorry people I've been acting like an ashole on this page. I'll tone it down a bit.

  • fucking faggots who gives a shit. just dont act like u know everything because wether u believe in religion or not nobody will ever know. and im just here because this movie is great not to see an argument on who believes what

  • @ImmaNecropedophile this movie is a contribution to the argument. I'm not afraid of confrontation, are you?

  • @TheDavid2222 eh depends

  • @XtheManimal you sir are a coward unable to face the realities of this world, I wish you wouldn't spread your parasitic ideas to the ignorant masses it.....bothers me just a little bit. It is not the atheists responsibilty to prove anything. If you think it is then you are using a burden of proof logical fallacy. I do not claim that god doesn't exist. I disbelieve in him because of lack of evidence. I highly encourage you to face up to the realities of this unforgiving universe. I like it :)

  • We don't want to be alone so we make up god. We mislabel our aesthetic experiences as "spiritual". That's the tragic part if you ask me.

  • @TheDavid2222 No you dumbfuck... you absolutely retarded asshole who thinks he's got it all figured out and is superior to people who believe in god. I believe in an almighty being because I KNOW that I AM HERE, and there is SOMETHING as opposed to NOTHING, and that all this 'stuff' is composed of immeasurable beauty, symmetry and GLORY, if you want to stay blind to that go the fuck ahead, but don't bash my faith because you are too arrogant to see whats in front of you.

  • @CyrusOnline I don't have it all figured out. Unlike you I am willing to accept that the chance that God exists is right on par with santa clause. This is very simple logic. We are born atheists. I believe that people who believe in god have culminated there own ignorance and lack the will power to face logic like a human being with some dignity. The burden of proof is on you so it is your responsibilty as a human being to find evidence for your claims. stop embarassing yourself.

  • 'every living creature dies alone' that is so true...when i heard this i cried...i dont wanna be alone either

  • I feel so alone,too.

  • This part in the movie always makes me cry. I understand exactly how Donnie feels. I hate feeling alone. When you cant tell if what is real is actually there making it seem that its real, you just cant tell anymore, and you feel alone.

  • Today, a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed into a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There's no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we're the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather...

    -Bill Hicks

Something tells me Bill could have easily written the script for this movie...

  • @Makonu2 DUDE I love Bill Hicks! Thaks for posting that!

  • This is powerful.

  • xELxSOBREVIVIENTEx

You seriously think I have the answer to questions of that magnitude?

  • Hello, best movie on Earth.

  • @TheHolmesFactor NO! SECOND best movie on Earth.

Ever seen Fight Club? That's number one

  • Although the mocking about fear-love cliche, this movie was all about that. The loop he got caught into taught him what love is in order not to fear to die. You are never alone...

  • @photogeen so for you he did not die alone?

  • @remi777692 he didnt and you know it :)

  • @photogeen I don't think so he was laughing at the end I understand but he did not find what he was looking for in the end

  • @CanadaMan6 Thank you for being strong enough to face the world for what it really is!

  • HAPPY DAYS used that scene for the track dying alone done-awesome!

    Love the movie...

  • Beautiful music *hint hint the soundtrack to this and many other films* comforts me when I'm down. I don't feel so alone then.

  • Yes, you die alone in the sense that only you feel it in your body and in your mind, as you can be the only one to pass when YOU die, if that makes sense :P

Doesn't mean you are alone in an emotional sense - you can know that people love you and feel that and I suppose it's some comfort to know you have loved and there are people who feel the same.

  • @DynamicScherzo wow thats one of the best explanation for how to feel when you pass over....so simple too...ill try to remember that someday

  • @Iroh624 Oh thanks lol, it's just my way of looking at it I suppose.

  • i love this scene! i think it's really honest. his reason is so genuine-"i don't know." he wants to believe he's not alone, yet it's hard for him to simply accept it. he doesnt buy in 2 his school's babble because it's simply not real or enough. i think one needs to be shown the truth rather than be told of it. i thank God i know Him. and it's up to me to reflect His love to everyone. mother teresa once said, "im a pencil in the hand of a writing God who's sending a love letter 2 the world."

  • i love this scene! i think it's really honest. his reason is so genuine-"i don't know." he wants to believe he's not alone, yet it's hard for him to simply accept it. he doesnt buy in 2 his school's babble because it's simply not real or enough. i think one needs to be shown the truth rather than be told of it. i thank God i kno Him. and it's up to me to reflect His love towards everyone. mother teresa once said, "im a pencil in the hand of a writing God who's sending a love letter 2 the world."

  • This is the part of the movie that makes my heart feel heavy...

  • "The search for God is absurd? it is if everyone dies alone"

  • Fuck, I need a therapist.

  • I don't believe in Organized religion, but I'll be DAMNED if I choose to look around and convince myself that nothing is there. You don't want to feel alone? THEN WAKE THE $^$# UP and realize that there is SOMETHING rather than NOTHING, If you don't feel comforted by that thought, if that thought doesn't give you enormous strength, then you don't understand what it means. There is no such thing as something from nothing.

  • @CyrusOnline There isn't nothing you Idiot. Have you looked around lately? Unfortunately for you, you are so distraught by the fact that you don't know the meaning of life that you are willing to contradict logic in order to feel better. You should look up the universe from nothing theory right here on youtube. You are so weak minded that you need to lie to yourself in order to get a dose of strength. Take your illogical, weak, bullshit and shove it the rest of us have reality to face.

  • he is saying "i dont want to die alone" . He is human. just like all of us..

  • he doesnt want to die alone just like gerard way doesnt want to die alone.

  • I'm more afraid of living forever :/

  • @MuFFiNMaN455 so so true....

  • I swear I teared up a bit when I saw this scene for the first time because coincidentally my friend and I were texting right before watching this movie about not wanting to be alone. Everything he says after the therapist asks if he feels alone right now is exactly how I feel too. Suffice it to say, I was sold when I saw this scene. I just have to buy it now.

  • Nobody is afraid of how they die more than death itself

U probably our christain so o there's heaven but guess what there's no heaven death is the end of it

  • is anyone else afraid of death as much of me, or am i alone, possibly crazy? i feel helpless at times, like times i have problems breathing because of the fear that hits me somtimes, like i would like to talk about it to somone, but i am afraid i am the only one

  • @tourzaman

your not. i would guess 99% of people are direly afraid of dying.

To me though I care about the way I'm going to die more than if, because there is no if. I guess when is important too. I just dont want to know its coming. I am like you though I think about it alot and feels like nobody else cares. Best thing is to try not to think about it, lifes too short. We could all die in 5 minutes from an asteroid u never know, future is not certain. Live it up while u can.

  • @tourzaman I feel that... Anyone who isn't afraid of death is delusional. Sometimes I feel the way you do too. I don't have problems breathing, but I get this overwhelming sense of... futility. If that makes any sense.

I don't have any answers yet, and I probably won't get any.

    This is a great scene.

  • @JatinderGill9 you are a very narrow person if you actually believe that a person who isn't afraid of death is "delusional". There are countless scenarios that would allow a person to not fear death. Unfortunately religion is one of them. There are very legitamte reasons why sane, even atheistic, individuals don't fear death. Death itself isn't what people fear it's the stuff around it if you know what I mean.

  • @TheDavid2222 You may be right. At the time I made that comment, I was in a nihilistic mood anyways.

  • @tourzaman of course everyone is afraid of dying, you're not alone in that.

  • I get an aching feeling everytime I see this part. Such a great acting job, honestly, e's the perfect fit for donnie ! so much emotion. it's in the eyes ): </3 *aches* .

  • Quite remarkable, the writing in this movie. So thought-provoking. I just wish people would quit trolling. It's making me want to put on a rage-face.

  • "a search for god is absurd?" "it is if everyone dies alone." love that line. it makes complete sense and i can def. relate to it.

  • beneath the surreal story is this heartbreaking struggle for donnie to find acceptance...and somehow this amazing film manages to carry us along his path and transcend that struggle and we end up with something so beautiful and incomplete...but it just works.

the best movie i've ever seen..and the most original.

  • Every living creature is born alone and will die alone.

  • @305Eaglesfan Your point?

  • @FrazzleAndTheWolf

Not making a point just stating a fact.

  • @305Eaglesfan The point is everyone knows it - bleating it out just for effect makes you sound like some god damn existentialist

  • @FrazzleAndTheWolf

What's wrong with existentialism, I like many others ponder the question regarding the chicken and the egg not so much on which came first, but which tastes better on a bun with with bacon, knowing full well the ramifications of my actions. As the great Homer Simpson would say 'mmmmmmmm bacon".

  • i was really able to relate to this movie when i first saw it. i have this kind of fear of being abandoned and dying with no one else to say goodbye to. but tht was until i found a great girl to be with. and not it's not so much a fear of dying alone, knowing that me n her will last and she knows tht too, but a fear of just being abandoned. but i can still relate to this.

  • If god exists why doesnt he apear so we will all believe and worship him like a real god to have no doubts and no fears why do we have to go threw such pain in life. If he really exists if meet him i want him to explain this to me really well i really want it to be true but even history admits that religions are made up :( this movie makes you think about so many things i hope we exist for a good reason

  • @XtheManimal

You're a liar... " have the experiences to prove" .. so prove or shut up...

Christ born 2000 years ago. human kind is 100.000 ys old.

What about the ones who came before christ?

Human have dozen gods with diferent conceptions... they were all created by ourselves, or..., have you saw some ( divine) words writtem not by human hands? May the gods (all them) are illiterate.

  • religion is o.k as long as it makes happy the one who has faith in it........

what is right or what is wrong...........is stupid .....there is only what is a bit more appropriate and that which is not........

  • @hentaiby strength and wisdom are superior to humility and happiness. No doubt about that one. If making human sacrifices made me happy and content ( which it used to for people) then my life would be a worthless lie. There is such thing as HONOR you know. Lying to oneself about the nature of reality is not exactly honorable you know.

  • @TheDavid2222 Honor, wisdom, happiness are meaningless from a universal viewpoint... How can any personality trait be 'superior' to any other? The only way this can be is if you look at it from a biological standpoint, and in that case, the 'superior' traits would be the ones which allow you to successfully reproduce. However, every human emotion plays a role in... affecting 'evolutionary fitness,' and it's impossible to decide which emotions play the largest.

  • @TheDavid2222 People have their own values, own meanings, own purposes... YOU don't decide what's honorable or significant for them, THEY do. If one man's purpose is to die happy, and he's lied to himself about the nature of reality in order to make himself happy, then what of it?

I understand what you're saying about hurting others. Religion has done some terrible things. But if the untrue belief is harmless, and actually HELPS others rather than hurting them, then what's wrong with it?

  • @JatinderGill9 the only eason that i think truth is so important is because the universe doesn't care about what we think. The universe wouldn't exactly think twice about destroying us (or letting us destroy ourselves). I think our best shot at survival would be to try to accept the universe. but of course I don't know for certain. I personally care about truth though.

  • @TheDavid2222 Also, get off your high horse, and stop putting people down. There are better ways to get your points across than acting like a self-righteous doucheb-

    ... Just caught myself.

  • @XtheManimal thanks i try my best :)

  • @XtheManimal shut up

  • Frank freaks. me. OUT during this scene.

  • This was in a song. Dying Alone Done - Happy Days

  • I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to. ---- this line is so beautiful it softens the pain of donnie dying

  • I find it uplifting to think we all began as one, and we will always be one, no matter what variables the Universe hands out that affects our actual mass. We will always be one.

  • The Universe has been explained on a second by second basis from the beggining to 1 google years into the future. Just because schools aren't allowed to teach it doesn't mean we don't have the answers.

  • No one wants to be alone but in the end that's what we are. Nothing can save us from ourselves. God will not reach Down from the clouds and bring you to heaven, Satan will not condemn you to hell. Our lifes are our own, and the end of them are the same.

  • That fear is what made religion...make someone to care for humans when no one was around...we created someone from our minds and manipulated urselves to think its true with irrelevant evidence. We are born to die & when we die we sat in the universe for eternity as our bodys decomposes & blends with soil and earth...earth still a a part of universe. We are eternal just not the way we expected...mass can't be created or destroyed. Why go beyond logic? Why go to god for answers? just live.:3<3

  • Anybody ever read of the DMT afterlife? Even DMT on its own is an interesting enough subject!

  • I want to try it, too hard to find though.

  • I have heard that it seems like hrs and its only like a minute or something..and people go to this peak of light where a buddhist monk or someone is at the peak of a mountain...crazy stuff..everyone sees the same thing or somethign.

  • The crazy thing is that it's illegal and not addictive at all. It as actually got people to stop doing heavier drugs such as coke and heroin. And we all do it in our sleeps, it is what makes us dream, it is what keeps us alive.

  • WHat is this? Sounds intreseting

  • Donnie Darko - one of the best movies ever - watch it!

  • I don' t want to be alone and to die alone too.

  • You guys who post here are so deep. Your philosophical and theological knowledge is truly remarkable. This scene is actually representative of something that social psychologists refer to as the Terror Management Theory.

  • god is somehting humasn made up to ease the fear of having no purpose in life, the fear of dying. the fear of being alone. he's made up to bring security to humans

  • Comment removed

  • Then who made the universe?Where did the structure come from? Think about the unique world we live in...it did not just come from a bang!

  • you have me :]

  • this part I can't watch or listen to it's very deep

  • Sadly i do want to die alone.

  • "I don't want to be alone"

    Me neither.

  • @Dresden1065

its impossible! if you try to be alone you'll see that it is just impossible!

Loneliness is a philosophical concept, not reality, or a state of mind that you control, stiil not real indeed.

  • @megalops07 The only thing we can know is that we don't know. How do we even know if the fucking world exists or if it's all in our heads? So what if we can't escape our inner fears or we can never truly connect with other people. Just crack a beer and live life to live life, that's what I say. =P

  • @Dresden1065 Who does. Reality's a bitch.
