Cool song, I didn't know it existed and it's the first time I'd ever heard it... I'm so used to hearing marches from Abba that when they switched to a waltz I was blown away;
Youtube seems to have so many changes in the last few months. I've managed to see all the fascinating info you put up with your vids, but I really like to be able to see all the comments on the page with the songs. However life changes & oldies like me have to learn to keep up. Thanks again John.
Yeah I'll have to get used to this new layout as well Annie. You can see all the comments in correct order for a video by clicking on "see all" in blue, which is now half way down the screen and next to "Most Recent Comments". It used to be at the bottom of the screen, which was more logical!
Cheers Annie - the enthusiastic audience certainly help this catchy song to swing along and Agnetha looks all set for a battle! There's a description of the background to this song and lyrics underneath the video. It used to be at the side of each video and easily readable until youtube made some unwanted changes last month!
Beautiful Song,....nothin' like my impossible luv Frida at the vocals, and WHAT VOCALS!!!! John boy, thanx for the info, anything about this fabulous foursome is soooooooooo INTERESTIN',....sendin' ya 5 shiny stars and thankin' ya for another AWESOME share!!! = )
Thanks Jose - Cassandra was a princess in Greek mythology and Frida became one in real life, her regal voice is perfect for this catchy "call to arms" song! Had to dig back 3,000 years for this info - I wonder if Bjorn was there!
I think Frida's natural hair colour is officially auburn, but she's clearly got it tinted here - I guess its to show she's a new person after the split from Benny! This song was recorded right at the end of their career and was intended for their next album, which was never completed but would have been great going by the 6 songs they had done! It was originally released only as a B-side, but was later added as a bonus track to the Visitoirs cd along with The Day Before You Came & Under Attack.
it's a really nice song. I only have heard the ABBA gold songs. So I've discovered a lot by them. I've grown up with their music and only recently (2008) got the internet, so there was lots I didn't know.
You've been missing out on a lot! Every track on every one of their eight albums is great and could have been a single as they set their standards very high! Even the songs that didn't get released like this one are fantastic!
Cheers Ryan - yeah its fantastic for a song that is hardly known and was only released as a B-side right at the end of their career! Just like all Abba songs it quickly grows on you!
Cheers Isabelle - that's my style, I couldn't do a video without the info now! I intend to visit Abba World on Thursday, as its school half term this week and I can make a day out of it.
Hi Isabelle - it went very well and they've done a very good job in setting up all the display rooms and history re-creations with audio coverage and making it all visitor friendly with the interactive features - I just managed to get out in time before they locked up!
Yes its all about the Trojan War that was won by the Greeks 3000 years ago using the famous Trojan Horse plot - which is not too obvious from the lyrics!
Thanks Jim - yes there was plenty to write about here with info going back 3000 years to the Trojan War! Bjorn always made sure there was a story in every song, but he sure had to dig deep for this one - its amazing what he reads!
Very nice clip. We talked about this song and listened to it in Latin. We're reading the story about Troy in Latin. :) And I was happy that I could listen to them during the lessons. They are amazing!! <3
Hi Emilie that's helpful coincidence, that I've done this song at the same time as you're learning about the Trojan War! You must be clever to read Latin, Virgil's 'The Aeneid' comprises 12,000 lines of it! Book 2 of 12 covers the siege of Troy and includes these lines spoken by Laocoon: "Equo ne credite, Teucri. Quidquid id est, timeo Danaos et dona ferentes." meaning "Do not trust the horse, Trojans! Whatever it is, I fear the Greeks, even bringing gifts". - a quote to remember for any test!
Great that's perfect timing - you'll have to take this video to school every day to study in case something else comes up! Abba did Dancing Queen, that's nearly Queen Dido! There's 8 more books to go, that's a lot of Greek history to remember - especially in Latin! We did Latin in my first year at Grammar School in the 60's, then it was dropped from the curriculum soon after and discontinued. I don't think many schools do it now, unless its as a chosen exam subject which I guess you're doing.
Yes, indeed:) Hehe, we watched this video yet in class and some of my classmates liked it, especially the teacher.:P We don't read the whole book, that would be aloooot of work and I only have 4 periods a week Latin. Here we can choose Latin in quite alot of schools but our schoolsystem is totally different of the Britiish. (We had to learn it for the oral exam of English)
Seems like your teacher is a secret Abba fan! If you do geography or history then my Abba video "What About Livingstone" is ideal for learning all about the life of the great 19th century African explorer Dr. David Livingstone in class!
I have both subjects but we are't arrived yet in the 19th century. We just passed Napoleon but we didn't listen to Waterloo... Haha yes I also think that my teacher is a fan. He collects vinyls and he has some ABBA's :).
Its expertly crafted in true Abba style Bruno - there's a gradual solo build up and then it launches into a beautifully sung harmonic chorus with a tuneful underlying melody and nice backing vocals! That formula always makes them stand out from other groups - great!
That's right they always liked performing in Germany, and the audience always liked them judging by this enthusiastic lot! Its great how they slowly build it up and then launch into the chorus - and there's an ancient history storyline behind it!
It was nice finding out all about this super song Laura, while listening to it many times. The anticipation that Frida's singing creates is always there, so you can't help liking every time. We've had our annual few inches of snow that always stops the country. I don't know what we would do if there was anything deep!
Love this John and although I have seen it many times before, it has always been without the wealth of information you always include, so a shame I had to find it rather than the fatally flawed YT system actually sharing it!!
Thanks Bill - yes I'm fine, just the occassional niggle like my son getting a 2nd hand sofa for his room today and it won't go up the stairs so now we're lumbered with it! Its always interesting looking into their songs and performances. I didn't know this song was all about the famous Trojan Horse plot from around 1194-1184 BC. There were no clues as to why Bjorn wrote about such an unexpected subject, but perhaps he'd been reading Virgil's ancient Latin epic 'The Aeneid' in his spare time!
I have Anna here for a couple weeks and I wrote a comment here when I noticed she had signed in on YT! That is why her comment was pulled! I was saying this was one of Frida's best vocals. I love this particular performance too. Sad is twas pretty much the end of the group doing live performances. Thanks for sharing John!
Cheers Dallas, yes its not easy to sing with such a controlled and pure voice as Frida does in the verses - she sets up the chorus perfectly! Then her energetic dancing helps get the performance into full swing for the audience to join in! It was an unfortunate and unexpected time for them to suddenly finish with half of their next album complete. But at least they kept performing to the end like here in Anna's home country, so that we could see some of what was to be on that next album!
Hi Carl, not this time as far as I'm aware. It was filmed live in Saarbrucken in West Germany and only shown on West German tv. In those days there were big tv transmitters dotted around the countryside to relay domestic tv channels around all the regions in each country and the satellites were only used for international broadcasts!
Hi Carl, yes this whole Show Express tv program was broadcast live with Abba performing The Day Before You Came, Cassandra and Under Attack in succession. But I guess there were the usual advert breaks, so that they could get a rest in between!
Cheers Carl - yeah its great how Frida holds the slow tempo with her pure singing and then it suddenly springs into life for the chorus! I've done longer descriptions before and had to leave some info out to accomodate all the lyrics. Some French fans had travelled from Paris to be in the audience, and they mobbed the group at the end! The working title was "El Paso" and it was later released as a bonus track to the Visitors cd. Cassandra was the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy!
Hey John thanks for your information. Everytime when I´m near the Saarland Halle where there have had their last TV appereance in Germany I remember this. And many thanks for posting it. The Saarland Halle is still standing, but they want to buy a new hall, without any money. LOL Greetings to you
Hi Mary - we've just had Abba World open in London with 25 rooms of exhibits. I reckon one of them should be set aside to recreate Saarland Halle and its great atmosphere so visitors could spend 20 mins watching these 3 fantastic performces of Abba at their best! And maybe a donation would then be made to keep the original hall standing and restore it, as it deserves its place in history!
Hi Max this song is largely unknown because of the sudden way Abba stopped at the end of 1982. It was destined for their next album, which only got 6 tracks done and was unfinished. It only saw the light of day as a B-side at the end of their career, which is a pity as its very good and deserved better! This is the only performance they did of this song, and we can see how quickly the audience got to love it! Cassandra was beautiful in Greek mythology, I guess that's why she's got this name!
I've asked my parents to get me the CDs all of ABBA's music for Christmas this year. I'm 14 (:
