I think that the "sore throat/scratchy" aspect was supposed to be on purpose. It helps show just what this song is talking about, you don't have to be perfect to be loved and be important. So by it not sounding so "smooth" like you hear on the radio, it goes perfect with the song and its' lyrics. Hope that made sense :)
