  • if geddy lee was a potatoe, he'd be the best potatoe that ever existed.

  • makes me shiver every time.

  • awsome song!! but i have noe complaint why isn't geddy playing the freakin bass!! i mean he can switch from bass to synth i just wish he would of down that in this song cuz i think this song is awsome enought to have a bassline

  • Saw them on this tour in Wichita Kansas back in the days of "Festival seating" Had to run like hell to get a great seat and avoid being trampled.

  • nobody could touch these guys then. if i didnt know better i would say this is the studio version lol

  • what a fantastic band, seen them 4 times and each time was better than before, they always put together such a great set of tunes for each concwert, new and a mix of the old classics, loved this tour because they played the then 3 parts of Fear in order, The Enemy within, The Weapon, and Witch Hunt, one of the best parts of the show!!!

  • Rush me gusta!!!

  • Alex's tone here is just mindblowing, he really is the kind of guitar texture.

  • It doesn't get any better than this.

  • what amp is Lifeson using?

  • @Xanaduswells Go to Music Toyz, and search for the Alex Lifeson article. It gives a great rundown of all his gear over the years!

  • it is such a joy to watch a fuckin fantastic band play, even better to be in the arena and take in that awesome sound they produce for just three guys!! There will NEVER be another group like them!!!

  • neil came up with some pretty apocalyptic lyrics in this song, would make a great song for any number of sci-fi flicks

  • @BLUESMANRONCHICAGO Ironically, i originally thought it was a tribute to the holocaust, as both Geddy's and Alex's parents are from that region that was afflicted by the third reich, and Geddy is Jewish.

  • @Jonnooriginal you could draw comparisons, but the fact that he mentions being the last ones left alive, sounds more like a story about the end of the world and earth being over run by aliens. would have to ask Neil which one he was leaning towards, either theory is a good one. that's what i liek about Neil's lyrics, they make you think!!!

  • @Jonnooriginal It's all about the Holocaust! Geddy's parents met at Auschwitz.

  • @iluvkathygriffn Slight inaccuracy there - Geddy's mother was liberated from Bergen-Belsen and his father was liberated from Dachau. However, you're quite right that this song is about the Holocaust - more specifically, Mr. Lee's mother's experiences.

  • Youtube? Rush sure as hell isn't playing in PHL on Dec 7. In fact, the center is booked for a Q102 Crap-a-thon.

  • There are very, very few rock songs as hot as this one.

  • I LOVE THAT NOSE!!!!!!! BEQUEATHE IT TO ME WHEN YOU DIE, GARY! I'LL HAVE IT GUILT IN SILVER, MOUNTED ON BLACK VELVET, AND MOUNTED OVER THE HEARTH! THAT THING IS GEORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Red Sector Eh?

  • Lyrically this is such a sad song. Musically it pretty much rules!

  • @ytserob2112 and 7 to much!

  • 7 dislikes?

  • Now i know why those guys named Petrucci, Myung and Portnoy formed a band after listening to Rush's songs.

  • Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!

  • They just don't make bands like this anymore.

  • @TellyaSomethin luckily they're still recording and touring!

  • @TellyaSomethin

That's the problem, they are making bands; just for the money.

  • @TellyaSomethin ever notice how close the timing is of each song compared to the studio version? Neil Peart is a master of tempo, their songs are never played too fast as is the case with a lot of groups who play live and it seems the songs are a bit fast.

  • great song about the post acopalypse, neil's lyrics are straight out of a sci fi movie script, alex's guitar riffs are smooth, the drumming absolutely perfect, and geddy's voice crystal clear. Remember, this is LIVE!!! ever hear another band sound this good in person?? think not!!!

  • i was 16 when i first listened a Rush's song. Since that day I now what is real music. Thank you Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart. Thank you for making that great music.

  • A fellow Rush fan made his own video to this with lyrics..and interesting Rush tidbits....and in one of those interesting tidbits ..it was disclosed that Geddys mom was in one of the Concentration Camps...AND..still to this day..has one of the tattoo markings from the camp she was in.....I bout fell out of my chair and i swear i started to tear up when i read that....was truly floored by that...

  • 7 Nazis watched this!

  • During their years with alot of keyboards the guitar playing got significantly harder i think. It took me awhile to learn this

  • IM 21!!!! what does that matter though.....

  • I'm 20 and Rush is one of absolute favorite bands, hands down. It's truly hard to believe that 3 men could create masterpiece after masterpiece, but Rush have accomplished this feat in spades.

  • My first rush concert was in 1982 for the Signals TOUR. I was only 11, but just absolutely mesmerized by the complex, emotional, and technical sound. I grew with some many different influences of music from the EAGLES to Led Zepplin to even Journey. However, there is no one even close that sounds anything like RUSH. What people fail to realize is that even this song Red Sector A in 1984 was light years ahead of its time. This song is now 27 years old but its still LIGHT YEARS ahead!!!!

  • i started listening to rush when i was 16 now i am 51 and they are hands down the best. there detail to their sound and instruments and their power has not yet and will never be duplicated.

  • This is probably the best use of synthesizers ever in rock music. They manage to create this wall of sound that's so unbelievably oppressive and overbearing yet at the same time hauntingly beautiful. Such a great blend of rhythm and melody. Rush is truly the greatest band ever.

  • Rush has always been a live band, and this is proof. This sounds better than the album recording! Hell, I'd go so far to say that they're one of the best live bands ever. I'm not weird for thinking that, right? :P

  • @MegashadX God no! You're speaking the truth! Rush is the best! :)

  • The drumming sounds hard as fuck!

  • That is one damn powerful song

  • Comment removed

  • I love Rush. Speechless.

  • Man! Rush is so good!!!! < the understatement of the year, Rush is AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • RUSH is NOT in the R-n-R Hall of Fame because.........

  • @tradinpaint999 because the rock and roll hall of fame is mostly for people who sold out. MC Hammer or some other pop singer is in it, and only had 1 rock song with the band areosmith.

  • @tradinpaint999 another good reason that i didnt mention is cause they are Prog Rock, and so far, Pink Floyd is the Only Prog Rock band there. The Shameful thing is, Rush Inspired SO many bands out there. They inspired 2 of my most favorite bands, Primus and Dream Theater, who are pure Virtuso's at what they do

  • @tradinpaint999

.....because the R&R "Hall of Fame" is actually a sham tourist trap whose voting entity knows NOTHING about real music and real musical talent, and all those shameless tourists who shell out their money to feed that sham machine are to blame as well for supporting that musical version of a bubble gum music infomercial

  • @mdover95 I wouldnt put it past them to have Madonna on the panel...

  • Great song like everything they have done. Although Neil wrote this song, Geddy's parents actually survived Nazi concentration camps.

  • 6 people are fucking nazis! This song is about survival!

  • Clocked the canny Canadians at the City Hall,Newcastle,Feb 1978 - Van Halen supporting,.Cinderalla Man was the oncore and I fell down in the snow, hurrying to

get back home on time.I got "Kings" sighned by the band after waking Geddy up

    at the gosforth holiday inn.Sorry Geddy,Micky Young,Toon. .

  • I listen to this amazing musical triumph and wonder how mankind always manages to survive our leaders lack of insight.

  • Where was this concert recorded? Anybody?

From one of Rush' first Canadian fans before they became world famous.

  • @Kenebutch Filmed at Toronto 1984 or 1985 you can buy the DVD Grace under pressure tour

  • 3 guys and so much music. Amazing. Thanks for posting this!

  • How do Neil's electronic drums from 1984 sound better then the ones he is using in 2011? LOL.

  • i was there to fcken coolkiller show

  • Rush is so incredible. Their music just grabs our souls.

  • 6 people need to be reborn and try all over again

  • you stupid assholes lol think you know shit abt music yes rush is good GL making real ppl understand that..

  • I've been a big rush fan since i was maybe 4. I am currently 16, i have 22 Rush albums and a few dvds a few VHSs and 3 books. I went to R30, I listen to Rush everyday. I have gotten countless people to listen to Rush and succeeded in it. I think everyone should listen to Rush. Even if it isn't your style, I'm sure there's a Rush song for everyone. THE GREATEST BAND IN THE WHOLE WORLD WITH OUT A DOUBT!

  • The day the rock and roll hall of fame comes to their senses and inducts Rush, it's going to be a madhouse. This is the most criminally under-appreciated rock band of all time. They are going to be stunned at the famous people who will want to give the speech, the artists who will want to pay tribute, the fans who will want to attend.

  • Alex looked like Kiefer Sutherland back then.

  • 2112 is their best album, but this might be their best song. The chemistry is incredible and Peart, live or on studio, nails those skins to the floor! Some urgent snare shots go straight through me, and there's shivers everywhere, Every note and beat raises eerie lyrics to an eternal place. And no surprise these guys have played about a billion and three shows together.

  • 1:11

  • I guess it must be the early 80s synths but traces of ABBA and maybe even Blondie here? Obviously that's a good thing! ;)

  • Are you kidding me with this? Bad ass!!!

  • I am on a quest to learn all the rush songs (a while ago) and this is the first song i learned.. thats how good it is... (then came mission! Thumbs up for Hold your fire and G U P!) :D

  • @ACDC123459 it makes me sad that Rush is a band that is often looked over, but what makes me more upset is that one of their best albums, Hold your Fire, is so forgotten. It shows the maturity of rush, yet still is very innovative and has a strong, almost jazzy artistic flare. I wish you luck on your quest, and keep upping hold your fire!!

  • dont blink at 1:33

  • this song just like all of Rush's are soo meaningful and powerful, i just can't wait until i see them at the 02 arena on the 25th may, they are by far the best band, and in my opinion the best musical artists ever, and will ever be! I may only be 18 but age is nothing (clearly as @iAMmissMegan is 13) it doesn't matter how old you are, at least us Rush fans know what true, meaningful and passionate music really is!

"Please listen to my music, hear what it can do" - Geddy Lee 2112 (live)

  • @AcmeStargazer AMEN to that!!!!!!!! I'm 48 and still listen to Rush religiously, as well as many other groups from the 60's, 70's and early 80's

  • @BLUESMANRONCHICAGO Good for you mate :) i'm sure you will contiue to until the day you part from this world, as will I FOREVER TRUE MUSIC, FOREVER RUSH!

  • Why can't there be a LOVE button!??

also 6 people still don't understand the pure brillance of rush, but at least we do

  • Comment removed

  • I'm 15, screw the rap craze, Rush all the way!

  • 6 people must be in DENIAL about the HOLOCAUST!!!! STUPID IDIOTS!

  • I'm a 13 year old girl who loves Rush more than any band, AND PROUD OF IT. I don't care that people think I'm a freak,, at least I have good taste in music. Wonderful song, I like it better than the studio recording.

  • @iAMmissMegan god bless you, a young teenager who appreciates a great band and great music.

  • @BLUESMANRONCHICAGO Thank you so much, God bless you too! I am completely obessed, or better yet, possessed, with Rush. My Daddy raised my right,, I suppose. Hehe :)

  • @iAMmissMegan I can't imagine my kids (7 and 10) growing up with the ... crap.. that is out there now.

I remember this son growing up and just concentrating to get all the drum beats just right.

  • @duanekimball Yeah it's pretty sad that I had to be born in this decade and stuck with people who don't know good music. But oh well, I will keep on commenting on Rush vids & keep caring the spirt of rock!! (which seems to be sort of low)

    Cheers, mate.

  • @iAMmissMegan Megan, these guys are legends. Possibly the greatest 3 piece band to ever 'grace' a stage. You are right to like this version than their studio stuff...their studio work just doesn't compare to their live stuff....that's not to disrespect their studio albums just to acknowledge their pure brilliance as a live 3 piece

  • @iAMmissMegan At twelve years old, i am often picked on by the other guys for loving Rush. Want to hear the best part? My sister is 7 and she loves Rush. We saw them three times on the Time Machine tour. PNC bank arts center on september third of 2010, Madison Square Garden on april 10, and two weeks later in Baltimore (6 hours from home). I hope they keep going.

  • @123Jus1 Whoooaaa dude, you're making me jealous. :) I'm happy for you guys, though. It's totally not right that you get picked on for having good taste in music. Don't let 'em tell you anything, they're probably too blind to appreciate it. That's wonderful that you & your sister like them!

    Keep on rocking! ~Megan

  • @iAMmissMegan I am not blind, i just know that the music people in my school sing really suck, and to know there is no band that puts more effort into their lyrics then Rush. Let's face it, if you look at Katey Perry and Rihana and Kesha, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize what they are actually talking about. Rush cares.

  • @123Jus1 I did not say you were blind, I said the peoople who pick on you are. People my age (13) are too narrow-minded to even comprehend Rush lyrics. Yeah I totally agree with you on that!!! Rush just rules!!!!!!!!!!

  • @iAMmissMegan allright, go on google, lookup alex lifson barbies (immages) and when you find the first picture (should be) look at the one in the middle, the one that im a dino... you read the rest.

  • @123Jus1 ....a 12 year old Rush fan....whoa...their is hope for

the future! Rush forward, young man!!

  • @iAMmissMegan good on you, i get that in college i'm like fuck you haha :D they rule, and not in rock n roll all of fame! not right is it? :( oh well, they play because they have fun which is what i like about them. :D

  • @iAMmissMegan Way to go girl!

Don't bother with the people who think you are a freak during elementary school and high school, hang in there till you get out and into the real world. There, you will find more people who love Rush, and who are awesome! Here, they are a secluded bunch, but they all look out for each other and are a blast to be with!

  • @iAMmissMegan i know right? I know what you mean though! My friends and lots of other people think i have a very weird taste in music since i will literally listen to most music out there. But Rush is one of my favorite bands! They're just truly amazing with every song i have hear of theirs :D

  • @iAMmissMegan That is the way to be. Rush is an awesome group and has been a favorite of mine for many years.

  • @iAMmissMegan You're not a freak that's for sure. I've listened to rush since my father showed me the band when i was young. As someone my age, Rush is my favorite band of all time. And even i say artists today can't even compare to this. Like Geddy Lee said himself, "I am moved more by melodies, song structure, and evocative textures."

  • @iAMmissMegan You may be the coolest 13 year old girl on the face of this Earth.

  • @EIGHTangrynuns Hahaha, if you knew me personally, you wouldn't say that. But I appreicate it.

  • @iAMmissMegan Your a girl and you like rush. That's all I really need to know haha. Trust me my dear. Your awesome.

  • @EIGHTangrynuns Hahaa, thank you! But you got something wrong, I don't like Rush, I love Rush :) Thanks again, you are awesome as well.

  • Comment removed

  • @iAMmissMegan I know where you are coming from. Nobody really understands it, they listen to that crap that has no meaning and just a bunch of crap thrown together. This music is really thought through and actual music. People can suck my balls. I'm 14, 15 next month. This stuff has meaning and I grew up to this music and I really want to thank my family for helping me and making me a person with a great taste in music and not letting me fall for that bullcrap people call "music." Disgrace.

  • @ClaytonsTv Not that i'm disagreeing. But you aren't even close to old enough to say you grew up to this music.

  • @iAMmissMegan Rush is amazing. I hate modern music honestly i like Rush, Queensryche, Iron Maiden, KIss, JOurney. All the good stuff.

  • @johnzarcone You can say that again! Heck yeah they're amazing. :) Good for you, I'm glad to hear someone in this world has a good taste in music.

    Keep on Rockin! ~Megan

  • @iAMmissMegan Rock on. I wish one person would step up and make a metal band again.

  • @iAMmissMegan slap a justin bieber lover in the face were you are please ^^

  • @TheHelionite I sure will :) I'll do it in honor of you.

  • @iAMmissMegan That's just fucking amazing!

  • @NerdPowah Hahaha, I am amazing. ;]

  • @iAMmissMegan Me being 16 is tough, being labeled as a freak because I am obsessed with these guys. FUCK THE HATERS! If Rush is the band you grew up on, it's hard to find equally satisfying music.

  • @NerdPowah I'm 27 now but I used to get a fair amount of flack for liking bands like Iron Maiden and Rush. Don't swet that stuff. Sometimes you gotta suffer for your art lol na, its just not everyone knows what real musician ship is all about or that theres deeper music out there besides whats on the radio.

  • @iAMmissMegan You're not a freak. You're just someone who has good taste in music.

    '

  • @327409427 Hahah, thank you very much, I'm happy someone understands :)

    Keep on Rushing! XxX

  • @iAMmissMegan

You go girl! It's awesome to see younger people who like this band. All the others your age who devour those hacks Lady Gaga have NO idea what they're missing....keep up the fire!

  • @iAMmissMegan

    You Go Girl.........

  • BEST BAND IN THE HISTORY OF ROCK PERIOD. BEST LIVE BAND EVER.

  • YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH11111111111

  • I'm 14 and I can hardly listen to this song without crying. RUSH is the absolutely the most talented band there has ever been. Hands down. Lyrically, Musically and they seem like awesome people.

And I don't undersand why majority of their fan-base is male, other girls must be stupid not to love them. And personally I think they're all great-looking.

  • @RushFanantic

Always glad to hear more young people getting into the classics and older bands. As a b-day present, I was at the show in Cleveland this past friday 4/15 which will be their next concert DVD. What a show that was. The only other concert I can compare it to was Pink Floyd.

  • @RushFanantic it's just not sandwich making music bro

  • @RushFanantic good for you dude (or girl), if you have a true appreciation for music and lyrics then this band is definitely for you. It's always nice to see the younger generation getting turned on to these guys, I myself have been listening to them since I was 4, thanks to my dad. Now I'm 21 and still am as infatuated with Rush as ever I have ever been, more now because I can truly pick up the complexity of their music and the artistry of Neil's lyrics. Long, live Rush.

  • @RoCk4LiFe90 oops, excuse the grammar error

  • @RushFanantic I agree

  • @RushFanantic I remain not a fanatic about many things. However, this is intelligent music my lady. The 13-14 year old crowd remain our greatest hope. Not sure how you guys noticed? We are caught currently with our pants down.

  • @tyme4mike boy I can't know what you feel, but this is just so powerful! How do they do it? With you !!!

  • Damn Geddy, we both lost so many loved ones in those fucking camps, I'm astounded how you can keep it together when you do this song. Tell me brother, how have you gotten by that interal heart-obliterating acid that is to me, hatred for those who killed my family? "They heard the sound of gunfire at the prison gates..are their liberators here? Should they hope or should they fear? For their fathers and their brothers it's too late..but they had to help their mothers stand up straight..." Fuck...

  • Screw the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame!! It is polluted

with Madonna and Run DMC, and probably in 2 years,

Justin Beiber. Rush has more talent in their left thumbs

    than than Madonna and DMC.

  • My favorite song from Grace Under Pressure. Hell, maybe one of my favorite Rush songs of all time, at least Top 10!

  • just genious

  • This song/performance is just.....incredible. But then it's RUSH...what else would one expect??

  • How does even 1 person out of 101 dislike this song. It's one of the few songs ever written that combines instrumentals, lyrics and overall polish that are all nearly flawless.

  • there's something SO AMAZING with this song and this performance in particular, i dont know what it is but im so addicted to this video, thanks for uploading!

  • 6 people hit the wrong button.....

  • One of my favorite Rush "mini-songs". Hemispheres is my favorite regular Rush song.

  • Be Humbled!

  • one of their best tunes.... i can never just hear it once, i always need to play it again

  • That comment up there wrote By "Chavosucks" Was my old account

My mum deleted for no reason

I had videos on there that i will never get back

Keep the comment alive by Liking it Thanks.

  • One of the rare time Lifeson uses a strat. he has a Bill lawrence pickup installed in it, theres several closeups of this unique looking pickup. Also.. probably one of the best songs ever, killer solo, lyrics, melody and groove.

  • Guitar gives me the chills every time!

  • The worst part is totally 5:20 !!!!!

  • One of my least fav Rush albums is Grace Under Pressure but this song KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • neil can write the best lyrics in the universe and play beast drums

geddy can play retarded bass epic synth and on top of that sing

alex has very specified arpeggio and uses harmonics(if im wrong srry)

    alex+Neil+Geddy=RUSH

  • Lee's mother and father were in concentration camps. His mother was in Bergen-Belsen and his father in Dachau. His mother didn’t believe that if there was a society outside the camp how they could allow this to exist, so she believed society was done in. Neil also read some accounts of people that were in these camps. The song title 'Red Sector A' comes from the name of the NASA launch area at Kennedy Space Center.

  • song is based on a true story handed down from the holocaust (when they were liberated, they truly thought they were the last living people on earth.....if i'm not mistaken one of the band members relatives??)

if you read the lyrics, it is so, so sad. makes one resolve to make sure that if we have that power, it will NEVER happen again!

but there are new injustices and cruelties to deal with...let's hear this and stand to stop all injustice and cruelty...that is probably the purpose of this song

  • This vid just reminded me that RUSH is my favorite band! :)

  • I love Rush, and this song, but there's no stage presence!

  • @leopheard Get out, seriously, just get out. If you don't get what RUSH is about onstage, then get out. It's about musicianship 1st, everything else is well behind. That's what makes RUSH what they are : the fact that they don't care about what's popular or what YOU like for that matter. It's about doing what THEY enjoy. They've always led by that example.

  • This album was what I listened to over and over before my 1st. concert amazing

  • During the chorus when Neil includes the hit on the China playing sixteenth notes on the high hat is the tastiest usage of the China cymbal I have possibly ever heard. Neil never ceases to amaze me. Genius.

  • funny when i hear this it reminds me of the Nintendo NES, lol! it just became available in the US the same year! but yea on a more serious note, my grandparents were also in a camp in ww2, which is how they met actually.

  • I have a new appreciation for these guys after seeing "Behind The Lighted Stage" on MTV a couple of weeks ago. I always like their music, but never knew there was only 3 guys behind all that sound! Thanks to DVR, I have played that show over and over. They raised the bar to a level not many groups can reach.

  • Neil is just a beast

  • i dont know about you but i thought this has always been better when its played live. and 6 people dont know what music is.

  • New record.

15th time this song's been played today.

  • I think I've listened this song 50 times in a row dude :D

  • @NobodyHero999

Same here! Last night I couldnt stop, kept me up real late! I believe this version is among the purest filmed material of Rush ever to find. Completely flawless with great sound.

  • I'm 40 and I was 13 when this album came out and it never gets old... it's about the concentration camps of WW2 as you may or may not know Neil writes the words and Alex and Geddy write the music, anyways here it is Geddy's grandparents were in one, a very power song without a doubt...peace

  • Am i gay if i'm sexually attracted to Rush?

  • 4:02 one of the only moments where you can be so excited playing a synth part that you jump around like its a fast guitar solo

  • While I know that this song is about the horrors of the Holacaust,

this great song by Rush makes me think about the 1984 movie

"Red Dawn"......esp. on the lyric "I hear gunfire at the prison gate"

This reminds me of the part where the wolverines free the political

prisoners held at the drive-in theater.

  • Out of all the commercially available live albums released by Rush, I think the best live version of Red Sector A (and Distant Early Warning) were right here on the Grace Under Pressure Tour.

  • @DanZero77

couldn't agree more, i thought i was the only one! neil's in top form on this '84 version. even much better than the studio version! it's tru, it's tru!

  • The wording in this song scream concentration camp struggles and the mentality that many of the prisoners surely had. The actual instrumentation, however, makes me think of the winter outside right now for some reason. What's great is that it meshes together pretty damned well.. that's RUSH!

  • rush is and always will be one of the greatest bands of all time. The music they come up with is almost impossible, their riffs and all of their instruments flow together like no other band ive ever heard. Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart are 3 of the greatest musicians who ever lived. LONG LIVE RUSH.

  • I am stunned about the line I just read that explains this song - Geddy was relating to his mother's story of being in the concentration camps and being very confused about the world outside of it. Because of the horrors happing inside, she figured that society must also have been destroyed outside of the camp - otherwise, they wouldn't have let the camp exist and the suffering continue. She truly thought she and the fellow prisoners might be the only humans left alive. Imagine that if you can.
