A good idea when you are studding/spiking is to heat the part of the jacket you are working on. Not too much, or you will destroy the leather, but enough to feel slightly hot. When the leather cools, it will contract around the spike and hold it rock solid.

1) Locktite is your friend.

2) on jackets with thinner leather, use washers on the backside of the screw and/or the spike to make it less prone to ripping out.
