This guys is retarded. Correlation does not imply causation. (e.g. most Americans die in a hospital but that doesn't mean hospitals cause death) A correlation between depression treatment drugs and suicide does not mean those medications cause suicide. In fact, the reverse is probably true. Depression causes the consumption of anti-depression drugs as well as suicide. This guy tries to sound all scientific but clearly he knows nothing about statistics

anti depressants dont do shit. IW as on it for years and waited 'weeks' for it to kick in. Not only have I but I have had friends who got off their anti depressants and felt better. The only times we would feel depressed was when to much is going on. i dont believe in medication and I think they use it to make money. The government is always trying to make money. For example, how come the ny state liscense plates had to change? You could have your car taken away if you don't PAY for a new one.
Statistics can be turned around to falsely indoctrinate people, and its used all the time in this society, seeing as the majority of the USA is incapable of logical reasoning.
A drug cannot control anyone's actions or choices in life, people make there own decisions, those people killed themselves because of there own issues, drug use had nothing to do with it.
People fuck up there own lives, they might just happen to put drugs in there body to.
Very good research. I really respect people who are sacrificing their time to change the world. You didn't just perform a hate-speech but instead gathered information and presented it. That's a lot of work.
And still it is even very convincing!
You should understand that suicide is normal. It's not about a pill, it's about us and society. We should try to built up a good world with love and good will.
The whole (c)rap and bad guy stuff is the reason why people are suffering. Help each other!
you say 68,000 people kill themselfs on antidepressants ,your forgetting that more then that kill themselfs who aren't on antidepressants and have depression in the first place.
OMG... I just couldn't listen to this dead head anymore. I guarantee he listens to Fox News and LOVES Glenn Beck. Does a stable, well adjusted person commit suicide? NO! People who are depressed - whether under treatment or with prior treatment - commit suicide. People who are bi-polar or psychotic commit suicide. Hopefully they are taking medication to try to make life more manageable. Some of them kill themselves, it's unfortunate but true. This man and his ideas are so LAME
Playing devil's advocate here, one thing I noticed about some of the statistics were in the way they were presented.
I would like to remind the viewers that correlation does not imply causality. Certainly a certain percentage of individuals being on these medications at the time of the suicide attempt/completion is striking, but couldn't we see it another way?
Should we be so surprised that these people committed suicide if they had reached the point where they needed the drugs?
I'm not a proponent of psychiatric medication by any means, but these are questions many laypersons, and even professionals, forget to consider when presented with statistics.
No one tool is effective for all problems in the field of mental health considering how many different variables are involved. Brain chemistry and neurotransmitter activity certainly may contribute to the mental distress experienced by some individuals, but we must also remember other factors are involved as well. Social factors, interpersonal factors, personality factors, and many others also contribute.
One time in my life I felt very suicidal. I was 29 and didnt have a job, a woman, money, nothing at all but I got the most important thing, my family and friends.
Never took any kind of medication in my life, I just survived that sad moment with the help of my friends and family.
Its hard to go through some things in life, I was there so I understand how sad you can get,
This reminds me of listening to politicians. They have an agenda but it is not made clear, the studies are quoted that support the agenda and there is no attempt to offer a balanced view (like, how many people are significantly helped by antidepressants. I am a psychologist, I can't stand organizations like this who don't care who they hurt, they just hate antidepressants and want people not to take them. This is so harmful and destructive! As usual, the "truth" lies in between.
Absolute rubbish to say anti depressants cause suicide. What a stupid and easy thing to say.where do all thses crap statistics come from? boo ! alcohol is bad ! boo psychoactive drugs ! bad! : rubbish talks
There are warnings on antidepressants about "suicidal thoughts", and if you experience them, to get off the medicine. It only happens to SOME people. These medicines DO help many people. Everyone is different, and people vary in the type of help that will work for them. Sometimes doctors aren't 100 percent correct in their diagnoses or treatment plans, but that also has to do with how honest the patient is being with their physician.
I wonder if the drugs themselves actually lead to suicide or is it that when drugs are given for depression they tend to be given instead of therapy and as a consequence can be seen as the 'last hope'?
While therapy can help us become more used to the fact that life is sometimes 'depressing' drugs tend to lead us towards believing that there is a cure to 'pain'.
Do you think your data maybe skewed by the fact that DEPRESSION makes people suicidal therefore people taking antidepressants are at a high risk for suicide in the first place. Being that the antidepressants take several WEEKS to work it would suggest that the time elapsed between being given the medication and peak of action, the individuals concerned, will still be depressed and suicidal. I would definitely differentiate the diagnoses / statistics on this one.
The statistics aren't skewed. Only how someone interprets them could be skewed and I was very careful in this video not to interpret the statistics but simply to present them. You can interpret them however you like.
The only claim that I make is that antidepressants aren't very effective at treating suicidality.
@psychetruth I agree I think it would be much much better to get them to visist a few counsellors and see which make them feel like they could be understood by them or helped and get them to talk to them, once or twice a week. I believe this would be 1000% better then any drug been through a phycotic episode... which is bull shit name for all the sudden I started to have awake nighmares... and felt i was traped in labrythin, the drugs made me feel worse. I could not think straight at all!!
Since the mid 1980s, the prescription rates of antidepressants have climbed 1000% and during the same period the suicide rate only decreased less than 10%.
If you assumed (and this is a big assumption) that the antidepressants were responsible for the 10% decrease in suicides then that would mean we have 1 less suicide for every 1000 prescriptions. That's crap in terms of effectiveness.
Suicide rate in 1950 was about half of what it is now before antidepressants were in common use.
@shaunkluzek Fact, before the marketing of antidepressants depression had a high recovery rate. The chronic relapse rate did not show up until after the drugs became the standard of care. Check out depression/antidepressants at Robert Whitaker ORG
The whole cartoon thing at the end does seem to indicate that you are, in fact, expressing your opinion. Based on a quote, you present the cartoons, which do not follow from the quote. This, at the end of your video, is, I assume, some kind of thesis. Not to go into detail, I would suggest that you read the quote again, and rethink the cartoons.
i think the death of these people are because the meds that are given to them like they are animals anti depressions does help some people but at the same time u have to help urself while u take these meds it dont work right away it takes about a month im on prozac 20mg and it makes me feel better than when i was on zoloft 200mg plus clozopan 1mg i think that is to much zoloft alone had me suicidal but idk this world and everything in it is fkked up the more tech the worse it gets
Drugging people to lead them suicide is the goal of those drugs. The only reason for that is 'suicide is not murder.' By this way, the target, or their child are able to be killed, and the murder is able to avoid punishment. This is what the Nazis 'social control theory' states.
Psych drugs actually cause suicide... Please go to Yahoo and type in the search with the phrase "Horrible Truth About Psychiatric Drugs" and also do the search "Documented Proof Psychiatric Drugs Shorten Lifespan" to see information on psychiatric drugs that no psychiatrist will ever tell you.... Shocking and revealing..... Oh and be sure to include the quote marks around the phrase when doing the search....
yep, the selective approach by the drug companies to clinical trials on their drugs has been shown as a fraud, they're not more significantly effective than a placebo..anyway ive been saying for 15 yrs that the theory theyre based on is recognised to be invalid..as you suggest it's based on correlation and portrayed as causation...the whole serotonin myth is based on a 'hunch' not geniune statistical significance..drug companies are modern snake oil salesman, regarding these particular drugs!!
I would say it's a little bit more than a hunch as medication IN CONJUNCTION WITH psychotherapy has shown to be more effective than just drugs or just therapy alone. The thing is, drugs might physically change how you feel, but it doesn't teach you how to cope. Ultimately, that's what is important in dealing with suicidal feelings.
As far as drugs, they have helped a lot of people, but are not for everyone. I think what makes me angry is how quickly they are thrown at the problem instead of looking at the needs of the individual. I would rather be dead than dependent on a substance to keep me balanced and alive. Again, I have seen first hand how helpful they have been to people, but they are not for me.
I guess the point I am trying to make is that suicide is very complex and individual. Statistics are recorded with the hope that patterns can be spotted to eliminate the problem, but the reality is is that only the suicidal person can predict if they are going to commit it or not and why. It's such a complex and controversial subject without an easy answer. Good video though.
I think that the reason that more people die whislt already having treatment than having none at all, is down to the fact that the most severe mental illness is most likely to come into contact with services due to the characteristic extreme behaviours.
I'd say the third of people who do not seek treatment are mostly people who do not feel they are ill enough, or can he helped.
In all fairness that may be a factor. But consider that mental health suicide prevention screenings literally screen out 20% of the people that take them when only .001% of the population (if unscreened) commit suicide and the fact that 10 percent of women in the US have already taken as antidepressants at some point even though suicide rates are about 1 in 10,000. So there are already about 1000 people on antidepressants for each actual suicide.
Anti-depressants do cause suicidal tendancies in patients, so this is to be expected. It is listed as a rare side effect, sometimes common side effect (e.g. Seroxat).
In this video, I never claimed that psychiatric treatment resulted in higher suicide rates, only that it isn't very effective at treating suicidality.
I know - but it's a thin line. How can we know whether treatment makes people worse? Many people report abuse within the mental health care systems. E.g. people with PTSD and BPD can be sectioned strip searched, humiliated, this happens frequently, and it does worsen their illness, when it has resulted from childhood sexual abuse.
Stats are from Drug Awareness Warning Network which is part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration with the Department of Health and Human Services of the United States Government.
I think the government knows those drugs are harmful to us,and the effect of those drugs is what they had expected. And have you noticed how many kids are being diagnosed as ADD and ADHD?
i take anti depressants but its been like 3 years since i started on them and i still dont see what they do the 1st time i tryd to commit suicide i tryd cutting my wrist when i was 15 but as you know your ment to cut down but i cut across i was in the hospital for 3 months now after some treatment and somewhat seems like 100s of different pills i still feel depressed but not suicidel.
and when you state the actual problem more problems arise: the main problem here is actually not just mental but very very physical - the brain itself is a physical force.
Really great info. I am a survivor of psychiatry, three years without pss..sick meds and with a great therapist I discovered where I came from and who I am. One must read on the history of psychiatry and I suggest you read "Toxic psychiatry" by Dr Peter Breggin. Bravo for your work and hope the medias will promote this type of info regardless of the power of big pharma!and the APA.
When I was on anti depressants for a while my sense of who I was wasn't their anymore. I think the psychological effects of taking a drug to change who we are is soul destroying. Even if we are in the worst kind of depression we still have a sense of who we are. Antidepressants have their uses but Doctors need to be much more carefull with their diagnosis and monitoring of depressed people. I personally think most of the problem lies with psychologists being so expensive.
this shit is completely irrelevant if it's not compared a control; a population of comparable population that is depressed and NOT on the drug...worthless information
If you look a the national violent death reporting system statistics you get just that. 60 percent of the suicides in five states were currently receiving mental health treatment vs. the other 40 percent of the suicides that weren't receiving mental health treatment.
Epidemiological data is important by the way, perhaps more so than randomized double blind clinical trails.
Vioxx as an example looked pretty good in the clinical trails but in the real world, it killed thousands of people and so had to be taken off the market.
Clinical trails don't always accurately represent what a drug will do once released into the real work.
My opinion, Antidressants arent responsible for these peoples suicides (except on rare occassions where they serve adverse effects), but it does show how little these drugs are doing for the people they are supposed to be helping.
There isn't a cure for mentaly ill people. I'm one of those people who suffers from ocd exities, prucher, depression learning disabilities, hyper active and i'v been on psiciatric drugs from almost all my life and they don't work at all. The medicine and med care in the world today is not advance and not prograssing at all. I'm not suprised these people committed sucide because there isn't a cure for them and they feel sick and bad and the only way to end their suffering is by killing t
I'm getting the impression that this is actually trying to help "depressed" people are medicated to help them feel more hopeless and powerless, thus this lable "mental health problem" as well as medication creates more hopelessness; a prescription for suicide. Perhaps this is part of an experiement? who can say, feeling as though there is a conspiracy may mean that I could be labled as "mentally ill".
I've considered the possibility that there is a covert modern day eugenics movement being perpetrated on the "mental ill". If nothing else antidepressants cause sexual dysfunction and lower sperm count and quality. They certainly discourage reproduction.
In all honesty, I wouldn't be surprised because I've only seen this abuse of the mental health "system" in America, and funny as it sounds, I lived in Florida, the home of the "Baker Act"; even my psych 101 teacher in the early years mentioned the system of people being litterally destroyed by drugs like lithium and thorozine, and that most of the time the symtoms of "mental illness" were often less painful than the actual so called "cure".
i saw a vid. of kent hovind describing a stone monument in georgia i think inthe mddle of nowhere with some scary inscriptions. also some scary statements by a powerful leftist who is in comand of a lot of food supply. such as he believes the world should only be inhabited by a chosen elite.
When you talk about people who are not getting mental health treatment what do you mean?
Have they gone to a doctor and been given no treatment or have they simply never gone to a doctor?
If they had gone to a doctor and been given no treatment then this would suggest that the problem was not severe. If they were able to live with the problem without going to a doctor then this would also suggest the problem was not severe. Either way you would not expect a lot of them to commit suicide.
Ok lets be more specific. According to suicidal(dot)com, "75% of depressed people don't seek treatment" because of feeling ashamed or stigma. It simply is what is guy. The CDC found about 60 percent of the suicides they tracked were already taking medications for a mental health problem. That's just fact. Also, see the 3rd video "suicide treatment" to hear from a CDC officer on the subject.
You talk about people who are getting treatment and those who are not getting treatment and wonder why there are fewer suicides amongst the people who are not getting treatment.
When the case could simply be that those who are not getting treatment simply do not have a 'severe' mental health problem.
You have to pay attention to the datum I give before that. According to the Surgeon General, only 1/3rd of the people w/ mental illness get treatment. I don't really beleive that statistic myself but it's sure is throw around in the upper psychiatric circles like SAMHSA and NIMH.
There was also an article in the New York Times just three weeks ago that said on average a person in the public mental health system lives 25 years shorter than a person outside of the system. One of the reason they gave for this were the obesity, diabetes and weight gain associated w/ the new generation anti-psychotic drugs. Mental health consumers need to be treated better and given real medical care.
From listening to the government studies. It would appear. Bio psychiatry simply is not effective in preventing suicides. Also the question is raised. Are these drugs causing people to commit suicide? I have to agree with the many doctors that say Bio psychiatry needs to be toppled. No logic, No science No cures. Just money in there wallet.
a really affective why to make sure you dont get deppressed and attempt suicide is to laugh a little. even at serious stuff, never take life or yourself too seriously
Good Job :)

Statistics are recorded with the hope that patterns can be spotted to eliminate the problem, but the reality is is that only the suicidal person can predict if they are going to commit it or not and why. It's such a complex and controversial subject without an easy answer. Good video though.

ah... my first comment I guess didn't post. Nevermind. I don't want to type it all out again.

MrsDerelictContent 3 years ago
In all fairness that may be a factor. But consider that mental health suicide prevention screenings literally screen out 20% of the people that take them when only .001% of the population (if unscreened) commit suicide and the fact that 10 percent of women in the US have already taken as antidepressants at some point even though suicide rates are about 1 in 10,000. So there are already about 1000 people on antidepressants for each actual suicide.
psychetruth 3 years ago
Anti-depressants do cause suicidal tendancies in patients, so this is to be expected. It is listed as a rare side effect, sometimes common side effect (e.g. Seroxat).
MrsDerelictContent 3 years ago
In this video, I never claimed that psychiatric treatment resulted in higher suicide rates, only that it isn't very effective at treating suicidality.
psychetruth 3 years ago
I know - but it's a thin line. How can we know whether treatment makes people worse? Many people report abuse within the mental health care systems. E.g. people with PTSD and BPD can be sectioned strip searched, humiliated, this happens frequently, and it does worsen their illness, when it has resulted from childhood sexual abuse.
Perhaps it could be both.
MrsDerelictContent 3 years ago
um, where are your stats from how many suicides were prevented by anti-d's?
lukeap 3 years ago
Stats are from Drug Awareness Warning Network which is part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration with the Department of Health and Human Services of the United States Government.

and when you state the actual problem more problems arise: the main problem here is actually not just mental but very very physical - the brain itself is a physical force.

I personally think most of the problem lies with psychologists being so expensive.
nG370 4 years ago 7
this shit is completely irrelevant if it's not compared a control; a population of comparable population that is depressed and NOT on the drug...worthless information

If you look a the national violent death reporting system statistics you get just that. 60 percent of the suicides in five states were currently receiving mental health treatment vs. the other 40 percent of the suicides that weren't receiving mental health treatment.
psychetruth 4 years ago
Epidemiological data is important by the way, perhaps more so than randomized double blind clinical trails.
Vioxx as an example looked pretty good in the clinical trails but in the real world, it killed thousands of people and so had to be taken off the market.
Clinical trails don't always accurately represent what a drug will do once released into the real work.

Why do you ask that? Are you suicidal or have been thinking of suicide?
TheeMessenger 4 years ago

Interpol, I wouldn't be surprised if the drugs caused long lasting effects that made it much harder.

AlterEgoTrip 4 years ago
I've considered the possibility that there is a covert modern day eugenics movement being perpetrated on the "mental ill". If nothing else antidepressants cause sexual dysfunction and lower sperm count and quality. They certainly discourage reproduction.
psychetruth 4 years ago

This is a great video. Those drugs "kill" not "cure' people.

Either way you would not expect a lot of them to commit suicide.
areyoumad2 4 years ago
Ok lets be more specific. According to suicidal(dot)com, "75% of depressed people don't seek treatment" because of feeling ashamed or stigma. It simply is what is guy. The CDC found about 60 percent of the suicides they tracked were already taking medications for a mental health problem. That's just fact. Also, see the 3rd video "suicide treatment" to hear from a CDC officer on the subject.

"You have to pay attention to the datum I give before that."
I'd much rather hear you opinion then listen to all these statistics.
areyoumad2 4 years ago
I avoid giving my opinion in videos like this.
psychetruth 4 years ago
You talk about people who are getting treatment and those who are not getting treatment and wonder why there are fewer suicides amongst the people who are not getting treatment.
When the case could simply be that those who are not getting treatment simply do not have a 'severe' mental health problem.
areyoumad2 4 years ago
You have to pay attention to the datum I give before that. According to the Surgeon General, only 1/3rd of the people w/ mental illness get treatment. I don't really beleive that statistic myself but it's sure is throw around in the upper psychiatric circles like SAMHSA and NIMH.
psychetruth 4 years ago
