Maybe I'm a bit lucky: I live in a very small town, on a river full of yabbies and fish, and I'm a horticulturalist.

Tomatoes and similar: Propagation trays, compressed peat moss for soil rejuvination, 50 or so 2 inch growing tubes. That'll get your crop from seed to garden with maximum yield and minimal seed wastage. Also got some marijuanna seeds; don't use the stuff myself, but easy to grow (A druggo could do it!) and will be a valuable trading commodity. Pumpkin also easy and high yield.

As for firearms; a .22 and a powerful air-rifle - they'll keep you in small game meat and you can safely and cheaply store litterally 1000s and 1000s of rounds of ammo. Fishing gear for the long term - lead and some sinker moulds, a roll of stainless steel MIG welding wire for a lifetime supply of hooks. Lots of heavier than usual line so you don't lose too much gear, or fish. Lots of galvanised one inch chicken wire for fish/yabbie traps.

Within a certain period of time, the miller moths will hatch out and when you go to use it, will either find that there are weevils in it or will find little cobwebs where they have hatched, pupated and emerged only to gnaw holes in the bag or box and leave. Just a point on buying silver coins. I focus on buying silver dimes. Why? I have more units of trade. When you are trading things like silver coins for rice your dollars will likely run out sooner. Nobody will give you any change for your silver dollars and you need the rice just the same.

Personally I don't understand why junk silver would work better than bullion. I know that junk coins are made of 90% silver, however, those who are not educated or know much about coins will probably look at them like regular coins. I know the difference of course but others don't. So I think it would be tougher to convince people in a barter society.

Will the value of silver increase dramatically where I may not need a huge amount? I'm quite confused here. Although, common sense tells me it would. My common sense has'nt always been at its best. Also if I have to pay bills, would the payees such as gas stations only accept my silver at face value? Would the true value of my silver be accepted at its true worth for bartering, such as purchasing vegetables and meats from local farmers etc? ? is, will silver have its limits of purchasing power?

I'd like to know the probable effects of the economy on people such as I that depend on a disability check from SS. I live in S. Georgia where I can grow vegetables and can them in jars, and a great area for hunting. I'm also a small investor in silver. I have approximately 250 oz. in 90%,40% silver coins and am diversified in the 10 oz. bars and .999 silver round ozs.

I wouldn't depend on your disability check. Silver is used to store and grow value; however bartering is unlikely outside of small communities. You will however, be able to trade your silver for whatever currency were using at the time, and then buy your goods. Thx for the comments

It's going to increase more than you can imagine. I can't think of a safer investment that will have a return in the thousands. Ag stocks will do better, but nothing is safer than holding physical silver not dependent on the financial systems.

I thought about gold and I raised the same question you pointed out, concerning the basic needs and the common man. It might not mean much to them in their situation or how to equate it. Being disillusioned will make it worse.

I didnt do it because the scriptures speak of heaping up treasure and people will cast their silver and gold into the street.

I'm buying extra yeast, tablets to make cheese, and much more. Things that I could offer by way of trade in areas of nessesity.

thats right vineryme why is gold or silver valuable to me? its not food or water or shelter or boots or anything else valuable to people without a palace to guild with it. i still havnt figured that one out. you cannot carry your hoard with you and your burb would be pillaged. preparedness is common sense, but remember y2k that was a boone for the companies who needed a quick buck and beware of all people claiming you need to buy a bunch of stuff especially gold. gold is not money goods are.

Both Gold and silver for poor folks is out of the question. Most poor in America live from pay check to pay check. If we have a mjor collaps it will NOT be Gold and Siver that is valuable but FOOD and clean water will be as good as gold. I think 55 gallon drums of water, weapons and ammo, tools to make reloads, books, medical supplies, and obviously food are more important then precious metals.

Also, in order to survive you will need to form small cooperative groups for specialization and defense. Planning to trade gold for water and canned food isnt a good plan.

That could be the prudent thing to do, but I believe that is how China and other countries have grown, which is through the citizen's investing every where but the USA. I have a soverignty issue and although I like Canadians, I do not want to take money to place in their country. That is not financially "smart", but I am going on principal.
