@mcclurgoman True, but the English idiom equivalent is more like "If you are with me" or "with you by my side." "Abide with me" does bring out the full meaning pf the lyrics, but it doesn't sound as much like something an English speaker would say in the context of the song. "If you are with me, I [can] go with joy to my death and to my rest." Literally "Abide with me, and I go with joy to my death and to my rest."
