i help shed my geckos all the time =], they never mind in fact they enjoy the helping hand. i guess its because i've been helping them from when they were very very little. in any case you should help them if they are having a tough time shedding and always look for their little toes and make sure they get shed if not they loose them....=[ thanks for posting! shes lovely!
Okay I have a shedding problem with my gecko last night she shed her skin but there is still some skin on her eye lids and she cant see. how do i get it off without hurting her?
my leopard gecko has he same problem but its only one eye i didnt do anything to mine its starting to finally come out my best bet would be go to the pet store and ask but i left mine be i didnt want to make it worse
Pet stores have reptile "shedding aid" spray, and I've started using a humid hide, which helps alot. As far as I know, leopard geckos don't have invisible eyelids.
I love watching the ladies pull off the 'evening gloves.' Their toes are reluctant to come out and a spot to always monitor. She was elegant for an ole gal. As for the commenter about shedding whole? They have obviously never owned a Leo, which isn't a snake by any means. Snakes also do not consume their discarded skin. The other commenter about predators & eating the skin? Leos live in a harsh environment and don't waste protein. This is why they eat the skin. Waste not - want not. ;)
Do you have a humidity hide. That would help with the shedding a great deal. Leos need humidity to shed, but not all around in their enclosure. Just one particular place would be good. They'll stay in as long as needed. Then the skin comes right off when they yank at it.
im not to knowledged about this, since im still investigating and stuff,(leopard geckos) but i thought they sheded becuz they were growing, but if shes 24 yrs old she cant be possibly growing,
Reptiles shed layers of skin to remove dead cells, dust particles and any potiental mites or parasites. Mammals - like us humans - loose particles of skin for the same reason all the time.
Depends on the reptile. Not all of them shed in one piece, such as my Nile Monitor. He leaves patches all over the place. It's cool looking at my leos doing it in one piece.
any type of animal that sheds will shed less and less as they grow older...but they will never stop shedding, the intervals of shedding just gets longer
if that gecko has a tough time shedding u should try to use a shed box, for mine i just took an old rubbermaid sandwich container made a hole in the lid then line it with wet paper towel, but only put it in the terrerium when theyre shedding and make sure to keep it on the warm side of the tank.
I am aware of that, but the need to remove the skin is to be prevented with use of a humid hide. I have had to work with other peoples leos that have lost toes, feet, exc. because they did not give them a humid hide, or remove the skin on the feet.
@rcocker hey dude my i just put a humid hide in my leos terrarium, but he has a layer or two of unshed skin, will that come off, i dont want to take it off because when i do it, a nail always comes out, i accidentally took 2 nails out so i am afraid to do it anymore, so will the humid hide help take it off, and my leo does not ever try to take the skin of of her toes
Did you get the gecko when it was a baby? You're probably a good leopard gecko keeper to have it live this long :) What brand/kind of calcium and multi vitamin do you use?
How are you not allowing your gecko to eat it, do you pull it off them? And them eatting there skin is necessary to their health. It helps to give them nutrients you are unable to, helping growth, immune systems, etc.
they dont necessarily need the skin, it just has some good nutrients in it. I believe if they have enough of what they need they wont eat it. Mine will sometimes leave it or decide to eat it. he has a bowl of icb dust in with him that he can lick at.
They may get stuff from the powder, but it is still not good to remove the skin, but yeah if they leave some parts of it, then remove that, but if they are going to eat it, leave it there.
Yea POAGeckos is right to eat the skin is good, it's like our vegetables we have to eat it, some do not read the information about the animal before they buy it, instead ask them in the pet store instead, and where they are not so knowledgeable, is some case
And btw, leogeckos can be quite old and its not amasing with a 24yrs old leogecko, but you have to be a good animalowner succes 24yrs with your cute little mate:D
I have also got eckos one high yellow albino one linebredsnow and one normal
I sure hope my little ones live to be in there late 20's. She looks great, I for the first time witnessed one of my 4 month old gecko's pull off/eat its entire shed took about hour and 45 min.
I've seen parts of the shedding process before but this time I watched from beginning to end. I'm usually too tired to watch the whole thing in the middle of the night. I'm old.

Lot neater the way reptiles do it, if you ask me.

SkaterChick797 3 years ago
They eat it in the wild, it's perfectly fine, it's 24 years old so i think the guy knows what he's doing.
Just a plus of a leo, so tidy, eat the sheddings
and poop in a corner

if ur sure.... i dont let my gecko eat it just in case though....
SkaterChick797 3 years ago
you're not supposed to to, it's actually pretty healthy for them, that's what the scientists say at least

just say:
-Let the skin in the terrarium
-do NOT interrupt the gecko at skin shedding!
-Let him eat his skin cuz in nature they do it to prevent laying a track.
-they don't need to eat it but it can't harm them and sometimes it's good for them because some minerals and vit's are in the skin...
DOT.^^
BUT: I think your gecko (vid owner ones) is a bit fat
