Alesi was a great driver, but too inconsistent. Kinda like Massa but the latter managed to overcome that. Going with Ferrari through their bad period also didn't help his carrer at all. But always a liked driver by everyone and he had some outstanding races regardless of the end result.
Jean made an emotional decision driving for Ferrari in 91 and turning down the opportunity to be the number one at Williams. Senna was the only teammate of Prost who made a somewhat succesful stand against the professors team politics. As a number two to Prost it was clear who the team would favor. I believe that Alesi wanted to be a bit like Gilles Villeneuve. You know the #27, dricing for Ferrari, the slides etc.
Alesi was well Focused to do the unthinkable with the slower car Tyrell,
1.pressuring Senna in USA & led a few laps and finish second.
2.Driving the car at monaco like its a go kart or like them WRC cars and qualified second & finishing the race in second.
with this kind of aggresive style he should been a mutiple champion rather than having only just 1 race win. only if the Ferrari wasnt in their unreliable state with mechanical failures then bad luck would happen to him.
i have about 18 minutes of in-car camera footage ( tv ) of alesi at that race just watching is pretty intense so imagine what it was like to race .plus i have every grand prix shown on tv from the early eighties up till now and i'm try to get them switched to dvd from betamax .
Every engineer will tell you that sliding a lot slows you down, it's fun, but it's slow, and Jean was sliding always a lot having fun and was always damn quick. Fuck, he qualified 7th @ Monaco, with Rubens and Mika just in front of him, 1 sec. of pole with the 2000's Prost which was worse than Minardi and he was ages in front of teammate Heidfeld!
He was okay but the fact he won only one race in nine and a half seasons says to me that he wasn't. Unlucky, sure, he deserved more, but not nearly as good as Senna, Schumacher, Prost or even Mika Hakkinen. Even Berger often showed him up.
god old f1 thanks for the video

If Ferrari would have giving a reliable car, i`m shure he would have giving us more victories (more than 1 for shure).

That was insane, mental! Great footage dude!

@ivanalesi those cars remind me of karts and a little sliding is still fast and usually means your more at the edge than others.

probably the most breathtaking driving you will ever see.

that monaco lap reminds me of the way gilles villeneuve used to drive. Wish we had some onboard footage so we could see the steering input.

berger was better on points in 94 because alesi missed a few races because of a broken neck,
plus alesi had more mechanical failures

I did not know Monoco was a dirt track ;) Talk about driving the wheels off.

just a point on berger outclassing alesi. Berger only beat alesi once in their 5 seasons together.

Wonder why he never did any better...

Jean the best!!!
We need currently drivers like him in F1, not drivers like ralf schumacher or tonio liuzzi!!

Ferrari had been better than Williams during 1990. As approaching 1991, Ferrari seemed the good choice. Bad luck...

are u crazy?
after 1990 alesi was only a regular driver, nothing else!

Always enjoyed watching alesi. Just frustrating that everytime he would lead a race or do well his engine would blow up!

Alesi was the most 90's talented driver! Totaly incredible on wet tarmac, and great fighter.
