Around 62,415 U.S. troops (Which makes up a little over 60% of ISAF) are under the NATO-ISAF command. The U.S. also has an additional 48,000 non-ISAF troops deployed there. In Afghanistan, I noticed that most of the battle engagements are initiated by the Taliban who are undetected and they usually disappear before any air-strike arrives. That means that they have calculated the timing it takes to pin down a unit of troops and the time it takes for that unit to call in an air-support. There are videos captured by American soldiers in which the Taliban recorded and in those videos, you see the Taliban in few feet away from US soldiers-just stalking.
The worst thing a a victorious army can do after capturing a country is staying too long. If they stay too long, the occupied population will learn their behavior. They will learn your strengths and your weaknesses and they will take advantage of that. Back in Somalia, Aidid learned that Americans don't leave their fallen brothers and so he planned to trap a few of them in order to get all the rest of American troops to change their raiding objectives to a search and rescue operation.

So far the Taliban don't think in global sense unlike Al-Qaeda but as this war prolongs, these guys can easily shift their battle strategies. Al-Qaeda members used to apply suicide bombings within Afghanistan in the initial Afghan war but now the Taliban have copied that tactic. Again, the Taliban have learned from the Iraqi insurgents to plant IEDs. These guys do adapt in their environment and I wouldn't underestimate them.
Nearly 100 wounded and it took Pakistani and Malaysian armored vehicles to safe the last stranded Americans. The battle didn't start on that day...UN soldiers were being ambushed and killed leading up to that Bakara market raid.
In the end, Aidid wasn't apprehended or killed and he continued to menace the country while all foreign forces melted away. Most of the Somalis killed on that day were shoppers at the Bakara market who got caught up in that firefight.
It wasn't about America versus Somalia. By then, Somalia was broken up into various warring fiefdoms. Most of the warlords were actually receptive of UN/American intervention. Some of the warlords themselves were Somali generals who were trained in both Soviet and Democratic nations. They didn't join Aidid's side because everyone felt that man had to be stopped. Some even wanted to be armed and join the American side (exact revenge on Aidid) but America didn't want to be seen as taking sides.
It must have been a shocker for all the Somalis who wanted Aidid out to only hear that all those UN forces quickly ran away after that little battle in the Bakara district with one measly warlord who controlled few blocks in Mogadishu.
The positive side was, Aidid couldn't capture other Somali regions as the opposing warlords somehow got themselves military grade weapons out of nowhere :D The intervention gave other Somali regions enough time to acquire much needed weapons.

the US bailed on afghanistan, handed it over to other NATO countries like mine, Canada. Im a Canadian soldier and we do more for afghanistan then the americans, simply because we are there! 5% of our military is in afghanistan! thats a big piece of our armed forces. We made a commitment and we will stick to it, not run off chasing imaginary WMD's, while secretly dealing for oil control in the middle east.

Around 62,415 U.S. troops (Which makes up a little over 60% of ISAF) are under the NATO-ISAF command. The U.S. also has an additional 48,000 non-ISAF troops deployed there. So I guess we "bailed" on Afghanistan, eh?

In Afghanistan, I noticed that most of the battle engagements are initiated by the Taliban who are undetected and they usually disappear before any air-strike arrives. That means that they have calculated the timing it takes to pin down a unit of troops and the time it takes for that unit to call in an air-support. There are videos captured by American soldiers in which the Taliban recorded and in those videos, you see the Taliban in few feet away from US soldiers-just stalking.

The worst thing a a victorious army can do after capturing a country is staying too long. If they stay too long, the occupied population will learn their behavior. They will learn your strengths and your weaknesses and they will take advantage of that. Back in Somalia, Aidid learned that Americans don't leave their fallen brothers and so he planned to trap a few of them in order to get all the rest of American troops to change their raiding objectives to a search and rescue operation.

So far the Taliban don't think in global sense unlike Al-Qaeda but as this war prolongs, these guys can easily shift their battle strategies. Al-Qaeda members used to apply suicide bombings within Afghanistan in the initial Afghan war but now the Taliban have copied that tactic. Again, the Taliban have learned from the Iraqi insurgents to plant IEDs. These guys do adapt in their environment and I wouldn't underestimate them.

Nearly 100 wounded and it took Pakistani and Malaysian armored vehicles to safe the last stranded Americans. The battle didn't start on that day...UN soldiers were being ambushed and killed leading up to that Bakara market raid.
In the end, Aidid wasn't apprehended or killed and he continued to menace the country while all foreign forces melted away. Most of the Somalis killed on that day were shoppers at the Bakara market who got caught up in that firefight.

It wasn't about America versus Somalia. By then, Somalia was broken up into various warring fiefdoms. Most of the warlords were actually receptive of UN/American intervention. Some of the warlords themselves were Somali generals who were trained in both Soviet and Democratic nations. They didn't join Aidid's side because everyone felt that man had to be stopped. Some even wanted to be armed and join the American side (exact revenge on Aidid) but America didn't want to be seen as taking sides.

It must have been a shocker for all the Somalis who wanted Aidid out to only hear that all those UN forces quickly ran away after that little battle in the Bakara district with one measly warlord who controlled few blocks in Mogadishu.
The positive side was, Aidid couldn't capture other Somali regions as the opposing warlords somehow got themselves military grade weapons out of nowhere :D The intervention gave other Somali regions enough time to acquire much needed weapons.
