  • My cat never coughed til we switched to clumping litter 2 weeks ago. Try crappy non clumping clay or wheat or newspaper and see if it helps. I'm going back to clay or sweatscoop

  • My cat does this. I didn't even know what it was until about five-ten minutes ago. He is an orange tabby and does exactly like your cat is doing, I'd say a bit less than once a week [once every 2 weeks-ish? It really depends, sometimes he goes months without doing it and others it's like once every few days, it's pretty sporadic] How serious is this? I have asthma too but I'm sure it's different for pets.

  • You should check this out:

  • Poor kitty:(

  • My cat has asthma also and does the same thing. When it gets bad I have to give her steroids for a few weeks them she's good for a few months.

  • just for clarification i take freddy to the vet on a regular basis. we have brought up the coughing to the vet and she said there isnt anything serious about it. he is fed well and taken care of very well and not abused. he shows some signs of a slight heart murmur but my other cat who does not have a heart condition has had episodes similar to this type of coughing also. so i dont think heart problems are linked to this behavior.

  • I STOP FEEDING MY CAT THE CAN CAT FOOD, PURINA....SHE NEVER HAD IT AGAIN...for my cat it was the food. i always had her on thedry food diet, no problem..the minute i give her a can food treat...she goes through the coughing and breathing problems..NO MORE CAN FOOD FOR HER AND SHE IS DOING 100% BETTER. AND TO THINK I PAID THE VET ALMOST $1800.OO FOR him to tell me she has asthma

  • @hapkido4 wet food is good for cats to have, if they have just dry food, it can lead to higher PH levels in their PEE, and then they can get UTI's. Its good to give them a little wet and a little dry.

  • @hapkido4 I am worried my cat might have asthma but I only feed him minced beef, chicken or pilchards- no pet food, he is on a fresh diet (all the meat is cooked). I don't know why he coughs like this.

  • My cat does this and she has cardiomyopathy. Have you had your cat checked via ultrasound for heart disease? My cat is now on 2 sets of meds but she is end stage heart failure. So sad. I hope your cat is okay.

  • I work with a lady who is disabled. Her cat also has feline asthma. The vet has her on prednazone (nut sure spelling) she is loosing weight dosn't help the cough .

  • That's an asthma attack. Cats may wheeze, but they will also cough, or make gasping or sneezing sounds. They swallow because their throat is filling up with phlegm and saliva.

  • Similar to humans. I cough a lot when im having complications. Thumbs up!

  • aww dude!

  • There is a shot given called "Dexamethazone" which now lasts 4-6 weeks (or longer) where NO additional pills are given. My cat gets it every year around Jan-Feb and once he gets that shot, he stops coughing within 3 days and doesn't cough the rest of the year. Be advised that every attack not only damages their lungs more and more, but also shortens their life expectancy. Good luck to all the kitties and doggies out there with this nasty condition.

  • Thanks for posting this video. I've had a look at all of them and after seeing this I think it's worth taking our cat down to the vets tomorrow to have it checked. Started noticing it three days ago and thought it was some grass/hairball of something else he may have been eating which got stuck but it's definately coming from his airways/lungs and he looks pretty uncomfortable when it happends. I will not be taking any chances... Thanks!

  • My cat has a cough about once every 6 months. That could be just a cough or a stuck hairball. ? It's over in 5 seconds. Her breathing is perfect otherwise.

Should I jump to conclusions and say she has asthma or bronchitis?

  • thank you for posting this..it confirms to me that the vet is right..my Kipper, almost 2, has asthma. He was responding to steroid shots but the last one did not work so I'm taking him back tomorrow, probably to learn to do the breathing treatments with him..I've read many articles that say only about 1% of cats have asthma..guess I have 1 in 100..lol..he's worth it all though

  • someone's been on my profile i never seen this vid so i appoligize for that comment

  • that's asthma? I always thought that was coughing on a hairball or something?

  • no its trouble breathing, frm small lungs and trachea (air hole)

  • You people are sick!

  • These people are trying to educate and help others who may have pets in the similar situation, it's not a laughing matter...so THANK YOU FOR POSTING.

  • poor thing it looks like its having a hariball thought

  • Oh poor baby!!!

  • It's sounds as if you were laughing at the begging of the video. I hope it wasn't at your cat's suffering. Because my cat suffers the same and I would never laugh at her.

  • Looks like possible asthma to me. I hope you took your cat to the vet for proper treatment.

  • Poor 'lil fellow

    ):

  • Meow.
