@thm133 Drop me a PM and I'll send you some links on cannon parts, construction, etc. Also, please tell me what type of ship you are building so I can get you information on the right sort of cannons.
@TheEthan1005 That is how we simulate torpedoes. I'm sure you can envision the safety hazards involved in using electric powered, explosive torpedoes, not to mention the extreme cost and manufacturing time per unit and potential permanent structural damage to ships that get hit by one.
Hmmm, if you guys like navy battles, you should look up the game NavyField, it's not the best, but it's the only naval game I know of that let's you fight with hundreds of other people.
The best part is that you don't have to fetch your ship out of the water and prep it when you're sunk, you just have to sit out the rest of the round.
@weylin6 I played Navyfield when it first came out, but have since moved on. Now I play SES Jutland, a full-scale fleet simulator with multiplayer capabilities. I'm hoping to participate in my 2rd International Jutland Anniversary Multiplayer Battle this May. I also play with my toy boats :D
@weylin6 Larger ships have gravity-fed reloading mechanisms and can fire hundreds of shots. Smaller ships like cruisers and destroyers usually use non-reloading cannons for simplicity and light weight, and reload on shore.
We do allow watertight bulkheads, but they are very strictly regulated by the rules. The whole point of the game is that the ships can be sunk, and we don't want to make that too difficult. More common is water channeling, used to direct flooding towards the bilge pumps.
@BrianKMKH Of course! The easy repairing of a ship after battle is an important design feature, and we've gotten quite good at it. We certainly get lots of practice at it :)
That looks like FUN!!! If only real capital ships engaged in muzzle to muzzle, full contact battle like this. Imagine the Hood and Bismark swapping paint.
@azimuth361 That would be awesome! We actually do have an HMS Hood in the club, and someone is building a DKM Bismark. Unfortunately Bismark has been under construction for years, and nobody knows when it will be done T.T
@TheEthan1005 Yes, there are merchant ships. They can score big points for their team by delivering cargo, so often a battle is decided by which team can sink more of the other's transports while protecting their own.
@TRAININGFLAME Each ship is armed with low-powered pneumatic cannons. They fire steel ball bearings ranging from .177" to 1/4" diameter. We also have strict safety rules governing the operation of these cannons, and, obviously, safety glasses are required.
@mudkiptyler That's called a Shore Battery. It's a defensive gun emplacement to protect things like docks and ports. Like warships, though, it is penetrable and sinkable, and meets all other construction and safety rules.
@bassmachine666 Most of the ships are "scratchbuilt", where the skipper builds the ship based on drawings and photos of a historical ship, and fabricates all the parts necessary. There are also fiberglass hulls available, which speed the construction process. It is also common for new members to purchase used ships, to learn about design and operation before investing in the tools, time, and materials to build a new ship.
how would you make the box thing would you be abile to send me a list of all the things i need how much it will cost and then if you have instructions on how to build one that would be good aswell
um... excuse me? Did I hear you right? Explosives!? Absolutely not. Not only do pyrotechnics of any sort represent a severe safety hazard on RC vehicles, explosives are capable of inflicting permanent damage to a ship's structure. Reskinning a boat after a battle is cheap and easy, but if the structure gets damaged then you've ruined a thousand dollars or more worth of model battleship, not to mention hundres of hours of labor. ABSOLUTELY NO EXPLOSIVES, do I make myself clear?
I'm usually pretty good about jokes, but safety is one thing I 'm always serious about. This is a potentially dangerous sport; if you don't take safety very seriously, you or your friends could end up very, very dead.
In over 20 years of battling, this hobby has maintained a perfect safety record, with zero deaths and zero serious injuries. I intend to keep it that way.
I know that already so doesn't help to talk to me like im a kid.
But hey thats your world.
I just think it doesn't look at all fun having to get that close to each other just to land a few hits. Kinda makes the guns look under powered and useless.
I've done random ship battles with friends haven't had anything happen yet even when using RC planes with armaments on them.
The ships' cannons are perfectly capable of penetrating armor at 30+ feet range. They are even capable, if aimed correctly, of hitting at that range with a reasonable level of accuracy.
*if aimed correctly*
When you're standing on shore, your ship is 20 feet this-a-way, and your target is 30 feet that-a-way, aiming correctly is effectively impossible. Heck, hitting a moving target that's only 10 feet from your ship is hard to do.
yeah I building my own r/c destroyer (its based on the red alert 3 assult destroyer) but I need the proper ELECTRIC motor(s) and batteries, where can I find one good for a destroyer 2.5 feet in lenth and 1 foot in width?
I would recommend that you visit your local electronics surplus store. They usually have a supply of quality motors for very cheap prices. If you don't know your local electronics surplus store, Radio Shack carries some decent 12v-18v motors.
What are the ships made of? What weapons do they have? I am assuming, since you said they fire steel ball bearings, that they have CO2 canister powered guns?
The ships are made with plywood framing and structure, and soft, penetrable balsa wood for sides. For armament, they have a number of pneumatic cannons. They are powered by either an air compressor with pressure control, CO2 bottle and regulator, or HPA tank and regulator.
There are a number of websites that sell hulls, plans, cannons, and other components, but it's up to you to put it together into a working ship. More information is available from the links in the video description.
by "that square ship", I assume you mean the floating box with a turret. That's a shore battery, usually used to discourage battleships from attacking dock targets. They also see use when someone can't get their ship ready in time, for whatever reason.
1) yes, people do make all classes of ships including destroyers, cruisers of all shapes and sizes, battlecruisers, battleships, and even aircraft carriers. Although at gun-dueling ranges, a carrier's combat value is questionable at best.
2) We have both team games and free-for-alls. Most of our games are played with red team and blue team, roughly divided along axis and allied lines. At the end of the year, we have a free-for-all bash called the Last Man Standing.
Do a google search for "Galbadia Hotel". There is a website by that name that has large collections of anime and video game music. The particular theme used here is from the anime Inuyasha, and it's the Band of Seven theme. I don't remember its japanese name, though.
Hey Danny, this video was filmed in San Jose! Do a google search for "RC Naval Combat Forum" and introduce yourself there. We can get you going from there.
it depends on what the historical ships had. Small guns, like destroyer guns and battleship secondaries, use your standard .177" diameter bbs. Heavy cruiser guns fire 3/16" steel balls. Small battleship guns fire 7/32" steel balls, and big battleship guns fire massive 1/4" steel balls. The big battleship guns are almost twice as big as the little bbs!
"emergency floats" like what you have described are actually standard fare on combat ships. Because everyone knows they may sink, they take precautions for when that happens. The ship that sank in this film has a really poor float design that rarely deploys, and simply has not fixed it. Some of my other videos have excellent examples of recovery floats deploying, so check it out.
Have you considered a tethered foam float concealed under a loose balsa deck plate. when the ship sinks the plate would pop off and let the float out the boat would sink but it would be much easier to recover.
That was great! What armaments do you guys use? I've Bottle rocket torpedoes but that looks incrudability done! I've always wanted to see model ship combat, thanks for sharing.
The ships are actually equipped with specially-built low-power pneumatic cannons, that fire steel balls from 4mm to 6mm. The cannons are run off CO2 or compressed air. Pyrotechnics such as bottle rockets are expressly forbidden, due to their unsafe nature and the irreparable structural damage they cause. Besides, there's no way a few bottle rockets could compare to this!
Depends on which ship. Unarmed transports cost $200-$300. Torpedo-armed destroyers and cruisers cost $600-$750. Heavy cruisers, battlecruisers, battleships, and submarines cost $900-$1500, with an average of about $1200. Please note that the low-end estimates are for veteran ship-builders with plenty of tools, and the higher-end estimates include the cost of getting the power tools necessary to build a combat ship.
A "torpedo-simulating cannon" is the same as the largest caliber battleship cannons in form and function, but only gets a single shot before you must return to port and reload it. They also do not have a rotation mechanism, which makes them more compact and easier to install in small ships like cruisers and destroyers. In effect, this gives small ships enough firepower to stand a slim chance against big, heavily-armored battleships.
Actually, submarines CAN dive. That's one of their main advantages. Submarines can dive up to a foot or more below the surface, making them effectively invincible when not attacking another ship. Their other advantage is their deadly array of torpedoes concentrated in the bow, which has the nasty habit of blowing large chunks of balsa armor away, rather than making clean small holes like most cannons do.
Personally, the deepest I've ever had to swim for a ship is about 10 feet, the maximum depth of my local pond. However, I have heard that a club in Australia battles in a deep reservoir, and regularly recovers ships from 20+ feet.
The ships are armed with one or more CO2 powered cannons. The cannons shoot low-velocity .177" to .25" steel bbs, which are just strong enough to punch through the soft balsa sides of other ships.
so what happens once it sinks.... you have to buy a new one?...... if that was the case alot of gunpowder and and "engine fire" would be alot more fun...haha
Once it sinks, you get out your swim fins and snorkel and go find it. Then you dry out the electronics and patch up the holes, and head out to do it again. My cruiser has been sunk 5 times in two years. It's still as powerful and effective as ever.
hehe mini mini paintball guns autoloading cause of speed and slope in back of the "magazine" hehe. To control recoil there are like fiber thingys which let it move to a limit
You can build one yourself, or ask around at your nearest club and try to buy one used. Buying one used is a quicker way to get started, but if you build one then you're more familiar with its performance, maintenance, and handling characteristics.
Theyre firing off ball bearings, this looks like big gun combat due to the torps. Lutzow took some well placed low hits from torp tubes which basically finished her off. The boats are fibreglass with 'windows' cut into them, sheeted with thin balsa so they can be penetrated more easily. The hobby isnt hard to get into. Most expensive part is a new radio, you can make the actual models very, very cheaply.
That was cool lmao.

How do these cannons reload? How many shots can they fire before running out?
It's not just 1 shot per tube is it?
You should see about putting bulkheads in those ships, if it's possible to fit them around the inside equipment, it would make them harder to sink
weylin6 10 months ago

Heavy cruisers, battlecruisers, battleships, and submarines cost $900-$1500, with an average of about $1200. Please note that the low-end estimates are for veteran ship-builders with plenty of tools, and the higher-end estimates include the cost of getting the power tools necessary to build a combat ship.
kotori87 4 years ago
So, what exactly are torpedos as opposed to the cannons? I'm assuming it's two different terms for the same thing - basically a boat mounted BB gun.
Also, I'm curious as to what the advantage to having a submarine is, assuming they can't dive.
Anyway, kickass video.

Most expensive part is a new radio, you can make the actual models very, very cheaply.

were the boats shooting? it seemed like someone was shooting at them from behind the camera
