  • "Its wayyy to tight" 2 secs later gets loose hits wall lol.

  • impact speed; 187 mph! Unreal. I watched this crash hundreds of times, and I still can't believe it. Thank God he came out okay. One of the most horrible crashes in Nascar History

  • those guys are just standing on the top of the RV like "Holy Shit."

  • that is something u will see a indycar do just like what happen too the nascar it is very very scary

  • I remember seeing this live. I was crying because I thought he was dead.

  • I guess all of the Kyle Busch haters will blame kyle for this wreck!

  • @Banditspeed montoya causes more wrecks than kyle, i don't like kyle cause he's a whiny little bitch...

  • it did that hook and go up the hill man

  • Is it just me or is the #00 a cursed number in NASCAR? Reutimann's had some huge accidents in it, and this one was probably the hardest. I'd be looking for another number, sort of like what Hendrick has done with the #25.

  • at the replay at 2:28 you can hear the first impact on the wall HOLY CRAP

  • It did it did that hook and go up da hill man

  • GREAT SCOTT

  • A combination of everything saved his life. Safer Barriers, COT, HANS, seats in the cars everything. So glad to see that Michael is alive and well after this.

  • Too bad it took the death of the sport's biggest star to get NASCAR off their ass and on board with some safety features.

  • @dbkparm NASCAR was on board, Dale chose not to use Nascars safety equipment, although now its enforced

  • @miamihurricanes471 THey had the technology of a SAFR barrier, and were too cheap to install it.

  • It did a turkey walk

  • There are many reasons why NASCAR isn't as exciting as it used to be. But cars being "too safe" isn't one of them. Surely, the one thing that old school fans do NOT miss about NASCAR from 30 years ago is their favourite drivers dying in twos or more every season in accidents that in today's cars they would have walked away from.

  • @azapro911 i was a huge nascar fan when i was a kid, but as a i get older n closer to the age of 20, its actually gotten realllyyy boring. I know it seems vague to other ppl, but to me, they should create the race cars, EXACTLY how the manufactuers build them, same shape n the headlights n stuff, and their OWN motors. Then it would be more interesting like the v8 supercars with action, with the manufactures displaying different advantages and disadvantages. Then Nascar would be interesting!

  • @m6205 They seem to be building the races slightly less around yellow flags this year, which is at least something because it got rediculous around 2009. Every 2 laps there'd be a caution, usually for a half spin by a driver nowhere near the pack.

  • @azapro911 yea, its ridiculus, thats why i tend to watch other racing a lot more now, just because they spin out doesn't mean they have to throw a caution. and more road courses, oval racing is cool, but often much more boring, less skill than a road course to drive. Thats why, and i am not a band wagoner, guys like Marcos Ambrose, Stewart, J. Gordon(fav driver) n Montoya and other ppl with open wheel or road race experince are the much better drivers than the Cup regulars overall.

  • @m6205 I'll agree there about the circuit and driver line up. Road courses add a different dynamic to the season. We find out who can turn right as well as left - and it's usually the best drivers like Montoya, Ambrose, Gordon and Johnson that thrive on it. Plus I think it's a good thing that we see some international drivers out there. I enjoyed seeing Jan Magnussen and Mattias Ekstrom at Infineon last year and Ekstrom in particular was very impressive. It was DTM vs. NASCAR. Very cool! :-)

  • Darell Waltrip's reaction makes him sound like he's never seen a flip before. Although I do understand that the impact was pretty hard.

  • @brendomatic1 He reacted that way because of how fast and hard he hit the wall. And how the wall was. I said the same exact thing as it happened, it's a reaction about how scary that was.

  • @brendomatic1 I thought about that after making that comment and that is very true.

  • pause at 0:53 188 mph impact

  • 00=00 WINS

  • @sleetskate Actually, David Reutimann has 2 wins in the 00. So its more like 00=02 wins

  • i will always give a little cheer for mcdowell at any race im at...just for surviving one of the most brutal crashes ever...

  • mcdowell is lucky he was okay, that was one hard crash

  • he hit the wall in the 180's

  • I saw this live too, and it was scary, that's for sure

  • Even if you hate the COT you have to say it has saved many lives.

  • lol thats crazy how he said too tight before he lost it. I heard something broke though so theres not much he could have done.

  • @jraybay dude, everything broke in that car, you couldn't tell if something broke before hand, either way it was the speedy dry that finished it off.

  • @lolimadethisvid Yea thats true, I don't think they could actually determine the cause of the accident other than he pushed too hard.

  • Imagine if there were a thing crashing a brick wall, that how that looked like.

  • who said "way to tight" ? McDowell or his crew chief?

  • @snakekey McDowell, the crew chief will never tell the driver that the car is loose, because he doesn't know

  • @mgandee85 yeah you're right that was a stupid question :P

    thanks

  • i read that his front sway bar broke on wikipedia.

  • We were there and I have never been in a place that was so quiet with that many people present. Everyone thought they had just seen a man get killed. It was such a relief (therefore the thunderous cheer) when he got out of the car. The bravest man there that day was Mark Martin because he had to qualify next after they repaired the wall.

  • 1:40 best part

  • @trellascales6 "Receding hairline denim alliance" was one line mine used. I'm using the "Translate Audio" option. Hahaha!

  • 0:58-1:01 DW: "I've never seen anything like that in my life!"

Considering this is coming from a guy who's Cup career pretty much ended on a crash similar to this one, that is saying something. Trust me, this guy speaks the truth when he says that.

  • At the moment of impact.. the computer read 184 MPH... damn....

  • its crazy how loud the cheering is when he gets out since theres not many people there for qualifying

  • gfduygsdfuygksgfkgrdskjfgkerjgfkuysgerkuyfg

  • When it left the wall he was still going 117mph, a deceleration of over 80 mph an hour in mere seconds. just nuts

  • @smkurtz do you work for the department of redundancy department 80 mph an hour?

not trying to be mean but i noticed the typo

  • He hit the wall at 196mph, a :53 seconds you can see it. Crazy crash, I'm glad he is ok, but after a hit like that I don't think I would want to be steping into another race car and i'm a race fan.

  • "That's way to tight" seconds later Loose into wall and u said it was tight?

  • look at the roof line when hes done crashing, not even caved in anywhere, just goes to show hoe strong these cages are in these cars.

  • whoa 100% reenactment XD jk

  • I don't like nascar at all.. but I'm glad that they stood by this car. That would have been fatal just a few years ago.

  • 0:53 the graphic says 188 mph...not bad

  • 10 years ago he woulda been dead and in pieces. Says alot for how far the sport has come

  • Way too tight. WAYYY TOO LOOSE!!!

  • DW : it did the hook and wen up the hill man Classic DW

  • i was actually watching this live when it happened on the speed channel

  • the government should really consider putting the saffer barrier on all the major highways. i'd feel a whole lot safer driving!

  • "I'm flying through the air, this is not good"

  • If Dale SR. hadn't died, there would be no safer barriers, and McDowell might have been dead.

  • @KINGCOOL420 You're assuming the SAFER would not have eventually come in. As it is Dave Marcis and others hits "unprotected" concrete with the same result as McDowell - people need to stop selling the safety of these cars pre-2001 short.

  • @KINGCOOL420 theres no might, that hit would kill 100% of people in it

  • @KINGCOOL420: Correction: if Dale SR hadn't died, NASCAR wouldn't have had as much incentive to adopt the safety measures already being used or being developed in other racing series. SAFER barriers had already been in development for years under Indy Car sponsorship.

  • According to the Speedtracker, McDowell Hit the wall at 188mph

  • i would've liked to see an in-car camera view

  • @tacospartan Wouldn't have held up, unfortunately.

  • When he got out on his own power...goosebumps.

  • @tacospartan what car... or camera :P

  • @tacospartan camera would have shattered on the original impact.

  • Looks very similar (except for the result) to Gordon Smiley's crash qualifying at the Indy 500 in 1982, where the car hooks to the left and then swerves back to the right.

  • I would rather flip in a NASCAR CUP Car, then get in a fender bender with a production car.

  • I still cant believe he survived even though the safety of the cars is incredible

  • @blambert19 I would've screamed something along the lines of "holy motherfucking shit!"

  • Hitting the wall at 185 MPH Head on.. NOT FUN. and he just proved it

  • bring back the old cars, the cot may be great for safety but it has made the racing so bad i dont even watch alot of nascar anymore. between the cot and the young cry baby drivers today in nascar now you know why the tv ratings are dropping fast and there are empty seats in the stands. 80's and 90's nascar was racing, today its just a big show

  • If this had happened before SAFER barriers...

  • THAT could have been FATAL!

  • This should be called flips instead of flip

  • God I cry so hard when I see this everytime.

I know this guy...gosh this was scary

  • @SnickeyyyAsk really?

  • @jaqua524 Yesss of course.

  • @SnickeyyyAsk of course? i meant really to the part that you know him personally

  • @jaqua524 And that's what I was responding to.

And yes I really do know him.

  • @SnickeyyyAsk gotcha lol...whats ur relation? friend? family member?

  • @jaqua524 Close friend. :)

  • I remember a crash like this in Indy, back in the '80's (Gordon Smiley). He got loose at 200 mph, the machine turned right and head on it went to the wall... What happened? Both Gordon and the car disintegrated on impact, he was killed the moment the car impacted. HOW THE F*CK did Michael survive (besides safety), I have no idea...

  • good thing darrel waltrip and everyone have a skirpt

  • and this is why we have spoilers LOL

  • 1:37 best sound you could have heard was the crowd cheering when they found out he was ok.

  • @blambert19 Their career.

  • comparing to Earnhardt's crash this one is at least 10 times harder than his. Earnhardt died McDowell survived. not only survive he didnt even suffer any injury. this vid is a proof of how nascar became safer since then.

  • @amokachi31 yeah..this was a harder hit..earnhardt's wasnt as hard...i mean, we see hits like earnhardt's all the time..however, it was 2001 and earnhardt didnt wear his hans device

  • @jaqua524 his face hit the steering wheel

  • @wcwfan33412 yeah i know...u know whats freaky? 2 days ago..when u made this comment....i was driving on 128...in the right lane..someone in the left cut me off, i slammed my breaks, and slid into snow...i hit my face in the steering wheel...and got a bloody nose...kinda weird

  • @amokachi31 this crash is not as hard as it may look, on sports science the crash was about 15gs Earnhardts crash was 75gs.

  • @wes3tomcat well I read this 15gs vs 75 gs all the time. but even though I searched for it I couldnt find anything official but rumours only. could you find an official report about this?

  • @amokachi31 Thats the thing, ive watched it on tv one time and tried looking for it EVERYWHERE and I cant find it as well. But they was also talking about jeff gordons crash at las vegas in 2008, as well as david reutimans crash.

  • @wes3tomcat actuallyafter my last message I read earnhardt's crash report. not only the summary all of it. with the crash test they did and the simulation on computer. and it says thatthe force is about 60gs. but ı still cldnt findany clue about the force of this very accident. but I guaeantee you my friend that its not much softer than his crash. and I can say that if his belt was not broken, he wld live a much longer life. perhaps retired with grand kids on his laps.

  • @amokachi31 but here is the thing dale was not wearing the HANS he died from a basilar skull fracture, nor did he hit a soft wall or was driving the COT. he crash was sudden. with the flipping you are losing energy and is coming to a stop.

  • @wes3tomcat uhm the flip is another thing. we need to extend this according to the law of conservation of energy the car has a total energy of its total mass x its speed. during the first impactit loses a massive energy and the restof its energy after the crash. if the crash occurs 90 degree to a wall or a head on to another car, it loses most ofits energy immediately. butaccording to the law of inertia, the driver, passenger or any object in the car, keeps on his/her/its movement.

  • @amokachi31 as Earnhardt's crash was investigated already, we know that the crash happened with a speed of about 150 mph. and bcs its not a head on crash but an angular crash the car didnt cometo a stop immediately. so the spent/absorbed energy during the first impact corresponds to a 45 mph head on crash. 45 mph head on to a wall. thats also a huge crash. but according to the report his left seatbelt is separates with the yellow 36 nr car.

  • @wes3tomcat he hits his head to the middle rollbar from right upper behind of his head. this impact makes his helmet to move upward. at almostthe same time he hits the wall. which makes his helmet to move a litlle bit more upwards. the rebound of the wall throw him fast into his seat which gives him the fatal head impactfrom the back of his head.

accroding to the report his death is sum of a lot of coinsidences. contact with a car at a curve, nr 36 car, broken seatbelt etc.

  • @amokachi31 Thats what happen too.

  • @amokachi31 belts never broke a saftey worker had cut the belts to remove dale from his car

  • @mulletsrule3388 but thats not my ps. its what authorities say. in the crash report.

they say left lower belt was broken by the 1st impact by car 36.

  • @amokachi31 they were wrong simpsion belt comapny actualy fought the ruleing and won the belt was cut

  • @mulletsrule3388 oh I didnt know this.

have you got any link about this subject?

  • EARLIER ..SEX WAS SAFE AND RACING WAS DANGEROUS....NOWADAYS ..RACING IS SAFE ..AND SEX IS DANGEROUS....CHEERS FROM BRASIL

  • @rdtli

    Funny yet so true!

  • @HiVultage01 lol...cheers mate....

  • If anyone was in that car, i'd be thinking if this horror was ever gonna stop!

  • i was there that day the crowed went seilent

  • i just love the way nascar decides to step up there safety when someone is killed or seriously injured. its good that nascar is as safe as it is today, but they only do it when something horrible happens.

  • @larz83drummer True that they do it after something happens, but how can they make car safer if they don't know what for?

  • @zandylovesrisk well concidering how much brain power is used in making the car go faster... they put only a little brain power in making it safer... i get ur point, i guess it depends on how u look at it

  • Man, could you imagine being one of the fans that saw this happen live? My heart would have been in my stomach.

  • "it did dat hook an go up da hill man"

    gotta love DW haha

  • ny1 notice DW saw it happening b4 it happened. expierence

  • Oh my god!

  • Safety has come so far in NASCAR since the beginning of the 2000's. The only thing I never liked about the COT was the wing on the rear where the spoiler was but now that they're removed that I'm happy.

  • i love how he says its way too tight and literally 2 seconds later he gets loose

  • if this happened in 2002 or something prior to the safer walls and the COT, he woulda been dead. he hit the wall at 185 mph

  • 0:50 Man he's running over 190mph when he gets lose!!!

  • 0:52 a total oh shit moment lol

  • @blambert19 lol When your getting paid as much as them i bet you would have kept from cussing lol

  • It hit the wall at 188mph

  • I'm glad i'm not a racecar driver because i'd be freaking out screaming "WHEN WILL THIS STOP WHEN WILL THIS STOP?"!!!!

  • @Brian211978 Probaly not...it happens so fast....

  • He was moving around in the car right away to try and hide the poo in his pants.

  • @CourtyardPigeon Your gay

  • @camaroracer454

I think what you meant was, "You're gay"....you illiterate redneck fuck

And if you must know, I'm certainly not gay...ask your mother

    *note how I used "your"*

  • @CourtyardPigeon i called u gay becuz your jokes sound like 13 year olds

  • @CourtyardPigeon Don't you hate when you post a comment because it's your right and you're just minding your own business and then some jackass replies to your comment with something like "Your gay" and they can't even spell it. People like camaroracer454 need to grow balls and get a life.

  • and people hate the CoT... if that were the old car, he might not have walked away, even with the SAFER barrier.

  • Gordon Smiley was killed in an Indy car in a similar accident. This really shows how much safety has improved in racing in general.

  • that car needs to be in the hall of fame

  • @blambert19 Holy F'k!! F'k! F'k! F'king F'k! Did you guys just F'king see that F'king Sh't? F'K!!! Oh my F'k! F'king F'k! ... Something like that?

  • Remember Daryl says during his first lap that the car bottomed out and walked up the track. This happend on the second lap.

  • @mne1205 it looked like he blew a right front tire too cuz you can see the tire smoke when he bottomed out and got loose and when he tried to correct it, you see the tire smoke from the tire going down

  • @blambert19 lol i totally agree

  • lol turkey walk

  • lol he was on the gas even as it flipped

  • I remember watching that on the news before they gave his status I was thinking "no way hes walking away from that..that guy is hurt bad" Kudos to NASCAR for their safety changes over the past few years...5 even 10 years ago he wouldnt of walked anywhere.

  • Did he died?

  • @ilackedtheheart hes living

  • @ilackedtheheart no he got out duh

  • I remember watching this live. I thought nothing of it, thinking it was just another regular qualifying lap. I thought I'd watch it though, because McMurray said it was slick going into that corner. My heart sank when I saw that.

  • @blambert19 They can't, or they'll get fired for swearing on National T.V.

  • Wow. I am glad his alright.

  • Whoa whoa guys whoa whoa OH NO!!! OH MY GOSH!!! I have never seen anything like that in my life!

  • @blambert19 Well, I probably would have too. And you have a point. But they know that kids might be watching so they just try their hardest.

  • The question of the CoT was never about the safety. It was about the racing.

  • EVERYTHING'S BIGGER IN TEXAS

  • 2:33 absolutely massive hit! unbelieveable

  • Haha DW " It did that hook and go up the hill man" priceless lol.......... glad Michael was okay though i remember watching this and going "HOLY SHIT"

  • For competitive racing the cor is a hunk of junk but for safety its doing its job but nascar needs to keep up with it and they finally got rid of that wing i had a bad feeling and never liked that wing in the first place. Im ready to see race cars with spoilers this weekend.

  • if you pause it and go to the part where he hit the wall he was going 189 mph

  • well, far as the racing goes yes the COT sucks. BUT I do agree that it is way safer. Its just interesting that after watching old races and seeing huge crashes, then seeing the driver walk away from the crash to then hear the commentators say, "This is just how safe these race cars are!" They are still saying that today and I fear that something bad is gonna happen to show the flaws in the COT still, if not sooner than later.

  • and ya'll said the cot sucks lol but it did its job about protecting michael

  • i can tell you now that if it wasnt for the SAFER barrier and HANS device, he would've been either dead or seriously fucked up

  • That's sad b/c Michael was favorite when he raced arca in 2007 and I was pumped when he joined NASCAR . Don't get me wrong, I'm a harvick fan 4 years running!!!! Good start in 2010 Harvey!!!!!!

  • man, that looked painful. glad mcdowell is OK.

  • hope he does good in the daytona 500

  • wow!!!!!!!!!!!

  • anybody know how much g-force on impact do the cots record it?

  • Yeah, every NASCAR Stock car is required to have a black box, but I don't know if the exact measurement has been released to the public

  • @rustyshackleford01 I heard what it was and it wasnt as much as you would think. The left front of the car hit the wall first which caused it to whip around like that and flip over, dissapating the remaining energy. If he hit right front first it, like Dale Sr. did, he wouldnt have flipped but it would been a much worse outcome.

  • wow

  • if this was normal street car you would be dead for sure!!

  • @m33lad if it was a normal street car, it probably would not be going 180 mph
