Beginner drummers have a hard time learning lessons by Steve Gadd or Bernard Purdie so I look at these videos as beginner drum lessons or stepping stones for a drummer to build on.
Lots of comments here...and i think I should say my piece now. Great that you are trying to help people...truly mean that and I agree that people shouldn't be dissing you for trying...however (yes there is a but)...If I wanted to learn how to drive...i'd want to learn proper technique, proper control and good habits right from the beginning. Now thats not to say my mate couldn't help me...but it is saying that perhaps, my mate, in teaching me bad habits, could be doing me more harm than good.
Hi Jonathan: Im 49 years old. Just recent given as a gift a 70s 5 piece kit from a older rocker who played pro for 20 years. To me reading music is like reading japanese. been 3 month since set up kit. Watching your videos & others Im playing the kit every day & getting better. I owe it to you & others like you who have the skill & balls to put up videos. Hats off to you. Im a lefty & have no desire to read music play righty or play in a band. Just wana have fun & learn something. Thank you!
thanks for putting these drumming lessons it has helped me alot im only a begginer and this is pratacly the first video i have watched and i am getting better abd better thank you :)
@spacemodulated dude im in a band i have been for three years ans i watched his videos and they helped me improve my drumming alot if you dont like it thats for you to say but dont be trashing him on his own videos he is helping alot of people and i personally think he is great so you can shut your mouth and go fuck your mother for all i care he is awsome
Re: the ability to read sheet music. No question it is an advantage, but the inability to read sheet music, particularly in a RHYTHM instrument is not necessarily a hinderance.
Case in point: Buddy Rich, arguably THE best drummer ever regardless of genre for most, if not all, of his career did not read sheet music. He played entirely by ear.
So, agree to disagree and stop flaming each other over opinions. Remember, opinions are like arseholes: everyone has one
Well mate, I've learned a few things and I definitely appreciate the vids. Your heart is in the right place and that's a right bit more than I can say for a lot of other people out there. Keep on doin' what cha do
dont listen to the dick heads mate. please keep making them i've just started drumming and im shit and this will hopefully help me get the hang of it.
thanks for giving your time to help. ignor all the idiots dissing you.. they cant be that good to be watching drum tutorials on youtube. keep it up your a great help..
i agree.. im a drummer too, and i call myself one cause i play the kit.. there are a lot of drummers who played it by the ear and never had any formal training or attended drum school.. John Bonham and Dave Lombardo are good examples..
i dont think your drums sound that bad they sound fine to me.. this video was extremely helpful and now i can do a simple swing beat... so u helped me, thanks
Ah I get it now! the quality of your instrument doesn't matter; nor does your technique; nor does the accuracy of your groove; nor is it important whether you read music, or start on the right beat of the bar. What DOES matter- is that you're "helping" other people to play just as badly as you do. Nice one man.
Imagine if your driving instructor had the same attitude.
Dude f them people who talk smack about your drums when i got my set it was just painted circles of wood i had to put all hard ware on my self i spent over 800 bucks building it your lessons have helped me get over a few drummers humps and i dont read music i play by ear i really would like some dvds of your lessons hit me up at beexrandon26@yahoo.com and you rock man keep rocking
Don't know why the sound of the drums would make any difference in a beginner lesson created for youtube... . Some ppl HAVE to feel superior I guess. I like the way you have it slowed down so that a beginner can actually absorb the lesson. Too many "beginner" lessons are way too fast. Actually a damn nice job. Thanks!
hi there im learning drums 2 and i dont think theres anything wrong with the sound of your drums they sound good 2 me and the good thing is as long as you can hear whats being drummed it dont matter about how old or new the kit ps your a very good teacher and im writing your tips down im my note book so i can remember what ive been taught thank you for sharing your tequniques with me and others from louise :D
having played the drums for a large number of years i feel that these back to basic lessons are vital, there seems to a large number of drummers more interested in how fast they can rattle round the kit or how the kit looks and sounds. some times less is more and the average punter will not hear all the fancy shit but will remember the basic rocking beat that gets them up off their arse.cheers. big old baz man
Forget them I have been playing drums for about a year and I whoop all my musical buddies at the drums that went to the drum core or whatever or that play in bands, and guess what, I LEARNED ALL OF IT ON YOUTUBE FROM VIDEOS LIKE THIS, so forget the lil "pros" that criticize, they like to criticize instead of teach cuz they think they're all proper. Keep rockin bro its about having fun anyway!!! =D
I have been playing for along time I don't read music I wish I did but what the hell yes you hold your stick in a weird way but if that is comfy for you then go for it. You hold a steady groove and you seem to know what you are doing. All of the guys and gals that are moaning get a life this guy is just helping people understand how to play drums people will develop their own style. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK DUDE. Dont let them other guys bug you.
All I am going to say is that I don't care about your drums or your level of play. What I care about is that there are certain things in your play that are just not right, beginners and especially young beginners can copy those things like the way you hold your traditional grip. Once they fall in the habbit of playing like that it can take a very long time to unlearn those habits. You can do potential damage to a persons learnings abilities.
I am nitpicking but I feel I need to point it out.
@philateliceun the bassist in my band is a multi-instrumentalist, and he has the nonprofessional grip ever for drumming, and he's just as good, if not better than me
@drummerofthefall But playing the ride with traditional grip is just physically not right. There are plenty of drummers who need to put their hands in ice water after a gig because of their poor technique. Maybe some don't have trouble because of it but some do and poor technique is many times the product of bad habits learned early on in the drumming process. All the thousand of books on good technique didn't get created just for fun, technique is essential for stamina and sound.
@philateliceun true...he could be left handed perhaps? either way, the beat isn't really that correct either. The beat just sounds to predictable and regular for jazz.
People are jerks.......don't listen. About 4 years ago, I watched one of your videos, "How to do a rock beat, for the beginner." I was so inspired that I saved up and eventually bought a drum set. Fast forward to today in time--I have been playing for 4 years, and because of your simple minute and a half video I have been on drumline for 2 years, and I'm going to Venezuela this summer to play drums in a band. I did take private lessons of course, but your video got me started. Haters gonna hate.
Wow, you actually hope that 1 out of every 1000 viewers are even more clueless than you. That is a huge stretch. I may not play drums, but I know enough to know that you have absolutely know idea what you are talking about, other than the fact that only a few musicians can get by without reading music, but that requires talent.
To be honest this isn't really swing. Swing should have a feel to it and not to be played on the bell of the ride! You don't just play the beat straight if you listen to drummers like buddy rich and neil peart they add accents and ghost notes to give it more groove. I'm not saying this is wrong, i know this is for beginners but if they want to play swing right then they have to study what other drummers do. It's not like rock and swing you have to study the style in more detail for swing. :)
I hope this year FINALLY i can get to write and make my music with these swings.if 2012 is real, well it can kiss my ass cuz i came to this life for a reason, that means this world should allow me to live and make my dreams come true
@MrDrummerboy1028 He does read music, he studied drums with a jazz drummer and he played in drum corps , he can read trust me, whether he uses that skill in his punk band is another thing.
Well honestly, i like what you did, but i played the drums for about over a year being self taught and was getting quite good, but couple a weeks ago i took drum lessons and i learned how to read drum sheets. Helped me a lot and i got good quicker and quicker cause of that and no beat seemed really odd or difficult after that. It really is simple mathematics.
Like you said, it is not a necessity, but myself found that it helps A LOT to learn.
well I totally agree with your view on the haters of youtube! I'm 35 and have been playing for near 20 years and I am self taught ,cannot read music either.so I am happy to here someone speak out like you did! great job! AD
Wow, Man, I really appreciate you posting these videos, i just got a drum set, i'm a guitarist, and i've been wanting to learn, just by watching ur video for a few seconds i learned, i seriously learned really fast, so thanks, n hey count me as one of those people you've got going thank you
well for me atleast u give a good an idea for the beginners....ur right man, it doesnt matter if those people visiting this video is more good player than u are...atleast u can help to those who really dont have an idea to this kind of beat...keep on teaching ...this video maybe sucks to others but very good lesson to others too.!!!
I'm having drum lessons at the moment and i think what you do is great , i use your fills and beats to improvise at church where i play....Keep it up and take no notice of others Jealousy takes many forms, thank you.....
I'm a 21 year old girl trying to learn the drums. My boyfriend and i live together and he has a drum set, I'm trying to teach myself how to play! And your videos have helped me! My problem is trying to get my foot to do what i want it to lol! But thanks! :)
Dude I appreciate what your doing, Your teaching me, a 44 year old how to play the drums. For real man, I bought my first set of drums last week (Tama swingstars) and I must say you're making it easy for me to learn.
There is no way you've got the worse sounding drums set in the world. Its actually sitting in my room as I type this. But it doesn't matter. A bad drumset is better than no drumset. I think these videos do help, so do you have a tutorial on how to use a double bass pedal. I think I understand the concept and I just need some explanations. I learn better visually.
hey i like what you said in the beggining. i mean people can talk crap at least you have a drum set and it sounds fine i just started playing the drums and don't even have a drum set.
hey i like what you said in the beggining. imean people can talk crap at least you have a drum set and it sounds fine i just started playing the drums and dont even have a drum set.
hey ive only been playing drums for about 2 mounths and ive been trying to learn easy things to play on here but none of them i can do cuz i have a regular drum set and not a super expensive kite like a pearl or a tama or eny thing like that but u have taught me so mutch and just the most simplest drum kite can make so pretty kool beats thanks for showing me
@DannyBoy1218 I had the same problem man then I figured out that tuning makes a big difference with the ringing. You got to tune it good. You can throw a studio ring on it too that'll take more ring out.
@Shadowseeker219z taught me too, ha my drum set is almost as ragedy as yours, picked it up free, my hi hat is busted so i have it tied at the pedal with a shoe lace haha, the only good thing on my drums is my double base pedal which i regret buying, waste of money i sucks i cannot work my feet at oposite times. i have come up with a method on how to go super fast with my double base pedals but my feet are to large sadly
yeah good m8, but i think when u hit the symbol three times, i think ur ment to let it bounce for the second 2, if you get me, like relax ur fingers, its like a little more fluente
You shouldn't feel bad, my symbols have large cracks in them, skins on the drums are dented deeply and horrible, and have 2 holes in my bass that are taped shut, and my hi hat is broken, I have the worst drum kit ^^
i get what you are saying about simply teaching and helping new musicians being the most important thing, but ignoring even basic theory (like counting beats in a bar as 1e/and/a2e/and etc) is just going to be confusing long run and halt the actual process of actually learning to drum properly. and with regards to how the drums sounds, would you take fashion advice from someone in a shabby suit?
i think this is a wicked drum lesson and it realy helped me to play the drums so thanks john pls post another i want to show my frinds wat i can do now
I'm also one in a thousand! Thanks so much!

Dude I appreciate what your doing, Your teaching me, a 44 year old how to play the drums. For real man, I bought my first set of drums last week (Tama swingstars) and I must say you're making it easy for me to learn.
Volroy 1 year ago
There is no way you've got the worse sounding drums set in the world. Its actually sitting in my room as I type this. But it doesn't matter. A bad drumset is better than no drumset. I think these videos do help, so do you have a tutorial on how to use a double bass pedal. I think I understand the concept and I just need some explanations. I learn better visually.

@DannyBoy1218 I had the same problem man then I figured out that tuning makes a big difference with the ringing. You got to tune it good. You can throw a studio ring on it too that'll take more ring out.

Shadowseeker219z 1 year ago 41
@Shadowseeker219z taught me too, ha my drum set is almost as ragedy as yours, picked it up free, my hi hat is busted so i have it tied at the pedal with a shoe lace haha, the only good thing on my drums is my double base pedal which i regret buying, waste of money i sucks i cannot work my feet at oposite times. i have come up with a method on how to go super fast with my double base pedals but my feet are to large sadly

D0nCab 1 year ago
@D0nCab well sometimes the beat is what you need and not the sound at first
