Here in the US, I regularly have to call a (US) company with an apparently British-made voice recognition system. It doesn't understand my eastern US accent, nor my (bad) fake-English accent. The only way I can get it to understand me is to talk the way I imagine the British developers were expecting - or at least how Brits often imitate Americans: in a hyper-Midwestern accent with very harsh R's. So don't worry; it's not always cultural imperialism - these robots are out to to get us all! :-)

The puritans settlers were from the South of England, where most of the ports were, and they spoke, and many continue to speak, like pirates, as in 'ooaaar me hearties'. So some American linguist finds out that most Southern English people used to pronounce their 'r's and concludes that they used to speak like Americans because Americans pronounce their 'r's. But that pirate accent is way different to the modern US accent
