i'd say the main difference between the book and the tv show is the tone of dexter's inner 'dia'logues. in the book he converses with the dark passenger but in the tv show the dark passenger is only mentioned in passing. It doesn't really have an agency of its own but is more a part of dexter. Instead, Harry fills that role.
