The claw doesn't "give away a prize". Every few plays or so the claw will be strong and reasonable. And with good aim, you will win. With terrible aim, or trying for a wedged item, it doesn't matter if the claw suddenly decides to be strong. YOU LOSE.

inside them machines is a little yellow box, that box controls how many times that machine is surposed to let you win, for example 1 win for every 10 people who play on it, it also controls how strong the magnet is in the grabbing claw, if the magnet is strong it will grab perfectly, if it is weak it will not grab anything,ITS NOW ABOUT SKILL ITS ABOUT IF ITS YOUR TURN TO WIN ON THE GRABBER

@07rjw no you goose, that only applies for electronic games. This is all based on the settings the hooks have, sometimes they are too loose and never grab anything (I've had plenty of time where they hit the top and drop). You should watch someone first and if they grab on tight, then you mite have a shot.

@Nakasoul It has to be based on skill or it is gambling and they can be shut down. I have worked for a few large arcades. The claw has a strength setting and they can make it harder to win. I have claw game right now that is even harder then that and people still win.

Nope there are 3 settings, one on how strong the claw is, one on how often a prize is given out and one more for how fast the claw closes, it depends on how much the prize is worth for a watch or jewellery it generally is a very slim chance of winning and the claw strength is very weak. If the time comes round for a winner, after the say 30 goes, even if it is the winning time if the claw is weak it may let go,

@Nakasoul that is not correct. If it is an older claw machine (circa before 2002) the game is all skill, but newer ones have a set payout rate based on a computer chip. Generally, it is one out of five wins.

Think of it this way, every machine bar rides are gambling machines or games of chance. Now the toys from these cranes come in boxes of 24,48 or so and each toy is roughly between 20pence and a couple of quid each(usually licensed toys like simpsons southpark and these thomas tank engines are more pricey) Now for one credit you pay what 20p/30p? immagine if everyone won on one 20 pence each. No arcade would have them, they wouldnt make any money. It's still a business afterall.
