  • Boals looks like Dave Mustaine except gay.

  • I don't wanna be rude but Mark Boal has a JB wannabe voice lololo ( I dont mean Jack Black, i mean Justin B#$ber

  • C'mon, Labrie? Mark sings great in studio AND LIVE, Labrie sucks live, BTW this is not the highest note from Mark Boals.

  • @orfeomichael well, mark didnt have a food poisoning, labrie is a great singer, and for what i hear from mark, he is great too

  • BOTH ARE GODS!!!!!!

  • Mark is good but Labrie is a very high level and unique vocalist

  • You can't compare mark boals to a GOD.

  • Meu Deus ! Mark Boals tem uma tecnica vocal formidável, más essa música é Monstruosa de ruim... Que isso gente !! worse impossible

  • one thing: full a5, in 2002 (still suffering the food poisoning and after an incredibly difficult tour), 2006, 2007 (when is voice started to decline again). YOU CAN ONLY IMAGINE WTF HE COULD DO WITH HIS VOICE BEFORE FOOD POISONING.

james also has a timbre that can't be confused. boals still remains a great singer, but he can't face a god.

  • James is far better than Boals, at least James can sing live where Mark fails to do so many times. I would say that at least Mark can do the high pitch screams live as where James cannot do anymore

  • Mark Boals also handles diction very convincing, element that most singers leave behind and not just in terms of original sounding quality but how to articulate that sound in right color.

  • Boals:

    a) Timbre - sounds like every other 80s singer, ever. There are a lot of those dudes.

    b) Full voice range - D2-F#5. Great falsettos, but they're his only real advantage.

    LaBrie:

    a) Timbre - unique, distinctive and chesty; his baritone-range singing has always sounded amazing, the highs did before he got too old to hit those notes with force.

    b) Full voice range - C#2 - A5. Full A5 is a crazy feat, the only male singers I've heard exceed it are freakish high tenors.

    The winner is clear.

  • @UnholyMessiah555 Completely agree.

  • @UnholyMessiah555

    Dear DT fan,

He DOESN'T sound like every other 80's singer since Yngwie found a hard time in finding while Soto left after Marching Out. Except his at least CONVINCING falsettos, he handles with moving tones through registers almost perfectly and by adding clear phrasing and melodic diversity, so DT fan with some keywords from so called vocal forums, just DON'T, with respect to your alternative knowledge. James in terms before Cuba poisoning was never too good and convincing.

  • @UnholyMessiah555 Don't judge and suggest anything by heart anymore, you're making funny guy from yourself, ok. James is talented and was good vocalist back in 90's, sadly his time is over and DT is pretty much very, very limited band without technically mature enough vocalist. Hitting high notes doesn't make you a better vocalist, at least not from the aspect of an experienced listener. So one more time, your comparison is very subjective and focused on your favorite instead who's THE better.

  • I'm not even gonna start how Boals's timbre actually makes him "on a whole upper level" singer in opposite of really just "limited" Labrie. I like DT's 1st album and I consider James at most the singer with high pitch, that's all for now.

  • @HeimanChords I hate to use this term, but someone sounds a little butthurt. Seriously, 3 comments in a row, all of which you say nothing more than "DERR LABRIE VOICE IS THIN AND U IZ DT FANBOI."

I believe, while we shouldn't even be comparing them in the first place, "Curiosityroads" posed a good argument. You just said "well you're a fanboy and i'm a vocalist."

  • @Whatthefuckisamuscle A lot more versatile singer, with full range of possibilities of using his voice, power and technique. I heard him so often through Malmsteen's discography in every aspect that I can compare two just from my memory and then again it's clear who is the objective winner(even in childish comparisons). You must hear Malmsteen's discography and you'll hear how he handles phrasing and harmony+melody perfectly. Sadly,Labrie was never good in any term more than an average vocalist.

  • everything on the soft-palate. Please I'm not someone you can argue with, I'm sorry but you're too ignorant, ironically absolutely clueless and obviously you do need more educo my friend. Just because you're a DT fan it doesn't mean you should let your ear-auditorial cortex limit you from the picture instead of tiny pixel mate. Relisten Malmsteen era carefully and you'll understand what I'm talking about at least 1%. Like I said Boals is a lot more diverse, powerful and serious vocalist than JL

  • wKTaHo35hvo

    Pretty sure LaBrie wins.

  • all in all (my opinian) james labrie is better, higher/longer note rangers, and a better voice

  • Anytime technically Mark Boals. His voice is so much more diverse and stronger in every sense. True Operatic tenor whereas Labrie is just decent vocalist with very thin voice without any chance of objective comparison. Boals could sing DT anytime, in opposite I wouldn't say so.

  • @HeimanChords Boals voice is much thinner than Labrie's. You are clueless.

  • @CuriosityRoads Nope, you're ignorant. I'm vocalist myself with strong background in every technique aspect. You're obviously half-deaf person with no more knowledge about this singers than their own names with obviously very limited space for spatial hearing.

  • @HeimanChords Oh man, you fail so hard. Labrie's voice pre-injury is not thin. It's immensely wide and resonant in the high range. Boals is a great singer but he uses 90% falsetto for the high notes and consequently thins out substantially up there. His technique can only be described as psuedo-operatic - infact it's Labrie who is classicaly trained, not Boals. Knowledge fail. Go learn something about singing so you can at least back up your arrogance.

  • @CuriosityRoads Listen little man, you're obviously too blinded from your own ignorance and inability to actually sing. Labrie is nothing technically in comparison with Boals, little fanboy. 1st of all maybe to your average hearing his voice sounds thinner but hear the amount of resonance he adds to it with chest control. Labrie had some pipes in the early days but if you'd be able to actually hear you'd spot that James hardly phrased and pronounces primarily because emphasizing and pushing ...

  • ...one song:LEONARDO. boals wins.

  • James Labrie

  • Old-times Labrie Wins... but nowadays Labrie can't do this kind of voices he used to sing 15 years ago...

  • Watch Another Hand THe Killing Hand live at the Marquee, then tell me who wins this. Labrie wins in my opinion.

  • @1337RaysoRb yeah thats a fucking awesome remake of the original, amazing jameslabrie!

  • @Bloodpool11 exactly!

  • it looks like u tried to fuck up boals with this.. way not the best song

  • Ugh, Boals has no sensibility in that clip. Hopefully he's not like that all the time.

  • where's Mark Boals with Malmsteen!?

  • Hooray!! because the only thing that makes a great singer is their highest notes! whooo singing!!!

  • This Boals guy has a nasty voice like Axl Rose. LaBrie FTW!

  • @KornSOAD Boals sounds nothing like Axl, you drooling 12 year old fanboy.

  • @CuriosityRoads 12 year old fan boy? Fan boy of what? and stop being ignorant - I'm not twelve. I'm probably older than you are. hahaha. You my good sir, are a dumbass.

  • mark boals hitting highest notes then labrie

  • If you ask me labrie is like Bruce Dickinson only better. His unique voice is unstoppable and to combine it with Dream Theater's instrumentals is unmatched. Don't forget Boals isn't constantly singing odd time signatures and memorizing 20 min+ songs AND other bands whole albums. It's clear who the better vocalist is.

  • @Stealthx37 Meh. Labrie's voice is not that unique. Infact, comparing him to dickinson is b.s. Bruce has an unmistakeable voice while labrie could be one of 20k out there. I liken labrie to a black gospel singer. too much swoopoing in his vocals and not enough holding the notes like a trained opera singer.

But that said you'd have to be a moron to not recognize his talent and he is very talented. Personally, I like boals 'cause labrie's style is too fruity for my tastes

  • Mark Boals is great but that voice is a dime a dozen. I'd rather Labrie's. You can't find it anywhere else. Not the same type, at all. Even those other high end ones, like Geoff Tate, they just sound like that plain power metal high note one, not Labrie's warm heavy range one.

  • @Wouterrj. I get what your saying. I know you've probably heard this a thousand times before, but James can't sing like he could in 92' anymore because he got bad food poisoning. So bad, that at one point, he vomited so much, that he ruptured his vocal cords. The band says he made a full recovery, but he never sounded the same after that. Less power and not as much on the high end anymore.

  • James.

  • Boals, labrie is more hard-volumed-screaming-falsetto-kinda i think....

  • I am surprised that there are so many people that say James is better. Probably because Dream Theater has a lot of fans. Technically Mark is way better then James. He has a lot more range. And be the way; James voice is not at all more powerfull then Mark's voice. For the rest it's just a matter of taste. But Mark can do everything live just as good as in the studio, while James doesn't always sing so good live. And James could sing so high in 1992, not anymore. Boals can still do everything.

  • I like that LaBrie sounds genuine and doesnt get whiney and girly at his highs.

  • I can't believe so many comments are claiming that LaBrie wins, despite his weak lows which are barely low, having to resort to falsetto for highs (which are notable nowhere near Mark Boals constant A5s and C6s) and not being consistent in singing live. I prefer his tone of voice, but in technical skill Boals is lightyears ahead of LaBrie.

  • @cobhc987654321 Uh, it's Boals who uses a substantial amount of falsetto for his highs, not Labrie. Labrie uses full voice, and his high register is easily more powerful than Mark's.

  • Is this really a contest?......To all Boals fanboys........let your ears take a lesson from RAW Talent in Mr. Kevin James Labrie

  • Mark is so much better

  • jaime vendera is great, just like his own coach and friend jim gillette ex nitro : )

  • JAMES LABRIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • I think boals on trilogy with malmsteen is far away from labrie, and i love dream theater.

  • jame better then

  • Dude you should have took The Killing Hand - Live at the Marquee for James. The whole ending is filled with G5s and F5s ans is damn awesome.

  • Mark Boals all the way!!! Labrie struggles with high notes 1:51 and then it sounds like he breaks into tears at 1:53. Boo hood dee hoo Mrak sings way better than me.

  • LaBrie has a better timbre but Boals can reach higher....so LaBrie!

  • @FearlessSpinner

Actually, LaBrie can go higher in full-voice. His top note is A5, and Boals' is F#5. Almost all of Boals' high notes are falsetto. LaBrie and Boals both bottom out at the same area too, C#2 and D2 respectively.

That aside, I personally prefer Mark's voice. I honestly can't stand LaBrie's nasal tone and beyond horrible diction.

  • james is the better singer no question asked

nobody does it better then james labrie :)

  • James Labries is good, but never is supreme with Mark, Mark Boals is other level... sorry I love the music of Dream, but James no is the better...

  • I love dream theater, but from a technical point of view, Boals is better.

  • I love dream theater, but from a technical point of view, Boals is better.

  • omg! it must be a joke... LABRIE!! FOREVER!

  • Both are amazing, They are both on a higher level of singing. It's just a matter of personal opinion, because they are both so good.

  • Mark is a great singer but James has a blessed chest and throat of metal history!!Try the high notes of James Labrie on YouTube! There's a big difference between you prefer Mark and Mark be better!

  • This isnt a good choice to demonstrate LaBrie's real talent.

watch?v=NavgL2L57C4 This one is much better =)

  • please don´t kick me to death, but i must say ,i don´t know who is better, but i prefer mark boals songs,i love satriani malmsteen and vai,but malmsteen is more the style i like, that´s why i prefer mark boals,he is the best singer for me,but again, maybe is because i like his style better, and labrie is so good too,his voice, but i don´t like his songs that much.

  • Common don't mix Metallica's name on this commentary,Metallica is a SHIT.We are talking about GODS like James and Mark! You saying that Labrie is not Better than Mark is lie to yourself just watch the vídeo again then search for the high notes of James Labrie on you tube,he's a God.Geoff Tate is amazing too but James is a great tenor, there's no comparison!James is a LEGEND!Sorry for my poor english cause i've learned by myself here in Brazil!

  • @TheFacilidade

    true thank you !!!!!!!

  • @TheFacilidade Metallica are GODS! without them there's no Dream Theater or others! So clean your mouth and don't say bullshit!

  • @80Phate there would be no DT without Rush and Iron Maiden... Metallica has nothing to do here

  • @Chiverra yes but i was listening Metallica's music!!!!!!!!

  • @TheFacilidade You didn't just call Labrie better than Tate did you?

  • Common don't mix Metallica's name on this commentary,Metallica is a SHIT.We are talking about GODS like James and Mark! You saying that Labrie is not Better than Mark is lie to yourself just watch the vídeo again than search for the high notes of James Labrie on you tube,he's a God.Geoff Tate is amazing too but James is a great tenor, there's no comparison!James is a LEGEND!Sorry for my poor english cause i've learned by myself here in Brazil!

  • I prefer LaBrie because of his more "full" sounding voice, especially in the higher register. Boals may have that too but I haven't heard him sound raspy or "deep" when singing higher notes while LaBrie has utilized his voice to its full potential in his career - clean, low, raspy, high - done 'em all.

    Still, both are phenomenal singers!

  • all 2 are very good! and very gods!

  • Jeoff Tate can kick their asses easily :)

  • its "geoff" tate :D

  • James.... James is the best!

  • james james james james james !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LABRIE

  • James Labrie is the winer

  • Is this a "guy who looks nothing like he sounds" contest?

  • JAMES ALL THE WAY! He and Tony Kakko are two kick ass dudes when it comes to vocals.

  • Labrie by far. His voice had so much more depth and thickness

  • mark boals

  • Definitely Mark Boals. His voice is soft and easy to listen. LaBrie's voice makes me nervous!

  • mark boals

  • james labrie

  • Mark Boals es mas afinado y ademas opino que tiene mucho mas fuerza vozal sino escuchen del album Trilogy la cancion "Liar".. Mark Boals is the best

  • All-in for James!

  • James Labrie---ALL THE WAY/!!!!!!!!

  • LABRIE! ive never heard a voice as unique as his.

  • James LaBrie >>>>>> God

  • Of course James LaBrie. If you complain about LaBries voice, then you must be ignorant or just a random Metallica fan. Because, when you actually try to sing almost every Dream Theater song with the exact note and all that, you will find it pretty hard to sing along. James ranges when it comes to vocals are incredible.

  • @Trumavarium are you fucking kidding me ? Got news for you.

People have opinions of their own and are free to express them. Somebody that complains about LaBrie is no more ignorant than you are. It's obvious that you're a big DT fan but Christ, get over it. The world doesn't necessarily agree with you.

  • @jennaboon Haha, of all LaBrie fans here, you must come and complain about my opinion. Anyhow, it's pretty clear - the DT fans have the right to actually say this, because DT fans always get bad comments from Iron Maiden, Metallica, In Flames; etc, fans all the time. Let us shine for once. And I haven't said that Mark is a bad singer man..

  • @Trumavarium oh nyes you fudge packer, i really give a shit about what you say. Now go wipe the cum off your mouth from your boyfriend. Sheep.

  • @jennaboon If you give a shit of what I'm saying, then you must be pretty lame really caring about something here on YouTube. Obviously you don't got a life or something similar. Why even care? It's my opinion. It's just that you are a PMS girlyboy who cries just because someone doesn't think the same way you do.

Just give it a rest. "Sheep".. hah, lame.

  • @Trumavarium Yep, I'm about as lame as you are commenting back to me defending James Labrie. You're proving my point that youra fan boy sheep. LOL AT YOU

  • @jennaboon So it's not lame that you are commenting back? Wtf.. Come closer to the reality. You can't be the one that's right all the time. Just let it be.

  • James Labrie, he has an original and powerful voice. Mark Boals is great , but in my opinion his style is too common.

  • Boals needs to step out of the eighties.

  • james labrie yeah

  • i prefer LaBrie!

  • both great singers different styles and tonality

  • mauvaise comparaison,. james labrie kick des ass!

  • Mark is a great singer but he has the classic boring metal voice. Labrie has a special tone, incomparable.

  • James is just a joke compared to Mark, no matter what the D.T fanboys say

  • what the fuck is this shit?!!

you are comparing them in too diferent songs!.. i mean, both are ballads, but mark boals doesn't give so much in that song!, but LaBrie seems to be doing his best!!.. -.-!

i am sick of watching comparisons like this!, in drummers, guitarrist, bassist, etc..etc.. first learn to compare, and then get notice that is not correct to compare.

  • @Malmsteen1990

stop acting like stuff is a big deal...it's not

  • James Labrie... Long life Dream Theater!!

  • James Labrie. Not that Mark isn't incredible as well.

  • It sounds like Mark Boals range is naturally higher than James LaBries. The higher notes are harder work for James.

I think both are incredible singers, highest doesn't mean bestest ;) all singers have a certain range to work with.

For me, James LaBrie has a rich and gorgeous tone that makes him stand out aswell as his melodic brain.

  • According to wiki this Mark Boals can do an A5 but james as we know can do F5 so yeaaa.

  • James ultra-wins

  • James LaBrie. Period.

  • I think James sounds a bit to dirty here...but he's still the master

  • james is the master.

  • I agree James LaBrie have an amazing voice, but i think that his voice was better in that times than now!

  • James LaBrie! :)<3

  • Not to sound gay but I'm so fuck happy that I finally found a clip with so many comments from Labrie fans! HOLY SHIT! Pretty much every comment on here is for james Labrie. I couldn't a agree more with James being the master. Noone has ever done is doing or will do anything near the level of James Labrie. I'm not saying something stupid like "he's the greatest in the history of vocal music" but I do think he has a legendary place in the history of contemporary music and rock. Labrie is the man!

  • LaBrie is better even if u didnt take the best song(any song of Images and Words would have been good specialy Another Day(the high vocal tracks is all condensed not like Metropolis))

  • Wow, high notes!

  • Mark Boals is way way better

  • JAMES LABRIE!!! He is unique

  • Agree... Boals voice, is something i've kinda heard before, theres none like Labrie out there... You'll never find any vocalist who would do any of the images and words song fully justice :P

  • actually I'd prefer as unique his recent live work... that's something man

  • @JoolsGuitar pure fanaticism, LaBrie is good, but he cannot compete with Boals...

  • @bkinblack fanatism? are you offended or something? Boals is amazing, but his style is pretty similar to a lot of metal singers'... Labrie's style is unique, no one sounds like him... I can't see where the fanatism is

  • the c6 of boals is awesome......so mark boals

  • Boals is okay, but I find LaBrie's voice more pleasant to listen to. LaBrie also has more power in his high range, even now, and especially back then.

  • LaBrie's voice from chest D5 but Boals's not from D5 so its not high. JLB is unbeatable here.

  • Oh my Dog O.o Boals would be a singer? Mah...

  • labrie is better

  • Mark Boals can kiss my fucking ass

  • LaBrie!

  • James fault is that on stage he lacks consistancy. Espesicaly nowerdays he tends to screech alot. Still a great singer & if you listen to Score 20th aniversary when he was on form he is unbeatable

  • @JoelPerren Since he started working with a vocal coach that taught him how to help maintain his voice on a tour LaBrie actually has become much more consistent.

  • He can only improve so far though, he is getting older and his ruptured vocal cord will never fully heal. If he does mannage to keep in tune and screech less even if he sacrifices some higer notes, i'll be happy.

  • @glaurung14 Ok I admit that his voice does not break as it used too... But do you really like the way he sounds right now ? You can't understand a word he says when he goes on his high notes...

  • @glaurung14 not with just anyone but the one and only JAIME VENDERA!

  • Labrie, the other guy is good

  • Listen My Time - Winter Rose BTW

  • ... this guy chose the worst performance from James... if you listen something from... this tour... your opinion will change xd

  • aguante labrie! boals tiene la misma voz cualqier cantate de rock ochentero! en cambio la voz de labrie es unica , ademas dream theater es lo mejor qe hay!

  • Labrie

  • yeah, so powerful!

  • labrie. listen to learning to live. that is all

  • LABRIE FTW!!!!!!!

  • Mark Boals is a fucking beast of a singer, but in no way can he be compared to James LaBrie. It may sound harsh but no one can touch James voice!

He has soft tones, low tones and great high tones as well. Plus he can go extreme with his voice like in ???

I forget the songs name right now DAMMIT......sounds like In the Name of the Father? or Honour thy Father??? SOmething like that. He went Mustaine on that song. I dont think a lot singers except Fabio Lione could hit such notes.

  • both

  • mark boals is an astounding singer, as well as james labrie, but there's a quality in james's voice i really like

  • labrie

  • Mark Boals rules :)

  • pfffffff obviously James Labrie! :)

  • no me gustan ninguna de las canciones que eljiste para esta comparación.

  • Labrie Is Better

  • Where can I get that picture of James LaBrie as a mii?

    God, it's hilarious.

  • Labrie still has his own hair.

  • definitely labrie, the fact that he is still the amazing singer he is after his accident is astounding, the doctor said he'd never be able to sing again but look at him. labrie ftw

  • i like labrie but i've got to say that i prefer boals la brie is good but can't sing songs like leonardo fairy tales won't die with the same passion........and what about the powerfull high note of boals la brie had nothing like that

  • JAAAAAMEEEEEEEEEESS!!! RULEEES

  • Btw, LOL @ James LaBrie's Mii on 1:20 !

  • Well, I think James is an Awesome singer, with songs such as 'Innocence Faded' or 'Voices' (And the entire the Images and Words album) to prove how talented he is... But there is no comparison point between him and Mark Boals... Mark is just astounding. Listen to 'One Little Mystery' or 'Shadow in the Dark' to hear how powerful he is. Furthermore, he has sung Opera songs like 'E Lucevan Le Stelle'. Don't get me wrong for this, that doesn't mean LaBrie is a bad singer.

Long Live to DT and RoF!)
