The rule clearly states that a free kick will be paid against a player IN A MARKING CONTEST who has his hands in another players back for any reason.

if the umpiring decision had been the other way around and gibson had pushed podsiadly in the back then pods wouldve got the free kick!!!! Result sucks, but it doesnt matter much. Franklin should have reached up for the ball which would have really emphasised the force of Lonergan moving fwd into his back. Im pretty sure that had he done this the umpire would have no choice but to award the free.
Would he have converted? not sure. I would say 50-50. Not has favourite spot on the ground to kick from. All speculative and all in the past. Hawks = 8-3. GC next week should make it 9-3. Great launch pad for a top 4 finish. All is well.

@yangerhunters mate get over your golden children. whenever cyril or buddy went near the footy it was pandemonium for hawks fans at the ground. Buddy did the biggest italian striker prima donna dive early on after a super soft bump from selwood off the play. He has no one to blame but himself for not drawing the free kick here. Didnt even attempt to go for the footy when he knew he was too far under it.

the rules dont say anything about staging. the interpretation is that any touch in the back, regardless of whether or not its actually a push = free kick. clearly that happened, but umpire mcburney - WHO IS A CATS FAN - was either too gutless or too biased to pay it.
so let geelong have the win this week. THE IMPORTANT MATCHES AREN'T WORTH FOUR POINTS, ARE THEY CATS FANS??? :P

but also, there was a clash of legs if you look, just before buddy's 'dive'. so the act of him 'diving' would be attributed to the clipping of the legs by the geelong defender, not intentional, but the umpires need to know the rules

Rule states that any contact of the back with the hands is a free kick! Either if there is a pushing motion or not, hands were in Franklin's back and therefore the free kick should have been paid. Weak effort by the umpire.

@huddopearcy he didn't grab the mark because he ran under the ball, and when he realised it he went for the dive at the slightest bit of contact. The Italian soccer team will be contacting his agent shortly.
