How bike friendly is the city? I used to bike everywhere in Boston in the early 90's and it was dangerous. Then again, I am finding Jacksonville Florida MORE dangerous on a bike, so go figure.
I couldn't understand how you were comfortably riding to work in a skirt/dress, then I noticed the video for the bike you ride. Since the frame you ride a step into type with wheel guards that flare out directly below and behind you, you can get away with a skirt. Not trying to be critical, but for ladies riding more standard bikes, they should consider putting the skirt in a bag and rolling it up (folding can wrinkle fabric), and going with pants for the commute.
One cool weather idea that's been used by bike racers for about a century is to slide a newspaper under your fleece/jersey when you start out. It'll act as an extra layer of chest insulation and a windbreak at the same time. When you begin to overheat, it's easy to pull it out without even stopping.
Haha, you could re-title this, "How a Stylish Newscaster should Dress in Winter" and it would be just as relevant :D I was looking for practical riding clothes for men but your video has given me some good information, thanks!
I agree that wool is the best for layering but I can only wear Smartwool (like your socks?) because it doesn't itch. I only have one bike that would allow me to wear a dress like yours.
I prefer Terry Bicycle's Wool Cadence Dress with Smartwool Tights and a GoreTex Bike Wear Jacket with Windstopper. These are breathable, yet warm and look great at the office when you arrive. You also won't need quite that many layers. Well done, happy bike commuting!

Hey! nice video! I am from chicago as well. Riding during winter can be harsh if your're not well prepared! Check out my channel for tips as well. On my next video I will talk about winter riding regarding nutrition!-
I used to bike all year round when I lived in Toronto and one thing to put emphasis on is how many layers I actually ended up taking OFF while riding in -30 weather!! After 15 minutes of hard cycling, you get so hot you can basically ride around without a jacket. Or at least that's my experience, maybe my blood circulation is just crazy.
I'm curious about biking in a narrow skirt like you're wearing. Can you really move your legs? I find even gathered skirts to be challenging and would love to know how you make this work. Great video--I'll be looking for some layers like yours!
Thank you for this video! This year I became a bike commuter in central Germany (lanes and trails galore) and was looking for winter clothes. This really gives me hope because I'm pretty sure that Chicago gets quite a bit colder than it does here. Now to find male versions of those clothes.
on a clear sunny day,if you where to compare your commute during summer/spring vs fall/winter, how much additional time, if any does it take for you to complete the same journey in the fall/winter season?
I'm in the northwest and we get in the low 30s in the winter, nothing like Chicago probably but I can't stand wearing my regular clothes while riding. I usually wear the warm stuff and throw my clothes in my backpack and change at work.
My favorite color for an overcoat is black....to better hide those muddy bits of water that I can't seem to avoid.....and dark pants, too. Thanks for the video....
Awesome video - really inspiring as I am about to get a bike to communte (great timing as its heading into winter in NZ!) Have to say your cat couldnt have been trained to be so perfect in this video! Just sitting there taking it all in occassionally shifting his head to pose in a different direction - funny and cute! :) Back to the video - good and realistic advice. Cheers :)
My biggest problems in winter cycling are keeping my hands warm (can you really control the bike in an emergency stop with mitts?) and managing to dress warm enough for the first five minutes without becoming drenched in sweat thereafter. Any tips welcome.
In warmer weather, such as spring, what do you wear. I grew up in Santa Barbara in the early 70s, and I remember two girls that rode their bikes to school (probably 7 miles or so). They would wear their school clothes which in those days was similar to your office attire, including tights or opaque pantyhose. I remember one of them telling me that it was a nice sensation to ride a bike with the breeze on her legs (with the nylons). As a guy I can't say I've tried that. What is your take?
How long is your bike ride in? Does Chicago get a lot of snow? Are your office clothes on underneath? I think you mentioned that they were, but it's hard to tell looking at the finished product :)
@inkydoug - I'm not quite sure what your intended tone is with this comment, but I have done exactly that at least 200 times going to work and back. Well, not always in January, but in winter. If you're simply requesting a video of such, I plan to record the trip sometime this winter.
@letsgorideabike1 Yes! That is just what I wanted to see. I figured you biked on city streets which are somewhat sheltered from the savage brunt of lake winds, thus the challenging tone to draw you out. My appologies.

@Lala123355 i thought they were nice -- i throw on old sweats in fall, w/along sleeve shirt & windbreaker. more important, they were practical. i know it's important to wear layers with zippers, so you can control swea because, besides not wanting to dampen, the evaporation of it in super cold weather makes hypothermia a risk to consider.
I ride every day around 16 miles.. but there is quite a few hills and damn potholes... concentrating on the road a bit more now.. as we are having a bit of snow in the UK and some times you can't see the ice! if you are a bike commuter to then you will realise that you don't really get cold and most of all keep safe ! :P
Thanks for the nice video. Now I feel wimpy for grimacing in the Los Angeles version of cold on my commute home last night. It was in the 40s. Chicago is a great city for bicycling, especially if you live on the North Side and commute to the Loop along the lake shore. Out here in car land it's city streets all the way.
thanks for this extremely useful video! thanks 2 u i got myself a wool sweater. i now live in it and i never get damp. It cost a bit but i will just reduce my chocolate budget. It'll even out soon enough.
@Commentary1984 - Actually, I buy almost all of my clothes at thrift stores, which are a goldmine for wool, silk and cashmere. For example, the dress I'm wearing in this video was thrifted for about $5. I encourage you to explore that avenue and let go of your misdirected anger.
@poachedice - Thanks. I bought the dress 8 years ago from a thrift store for $5. I think it was originally from Banana Republic. The magic of the dress is the leather ribbon around the waist. Otherwise, it's just your typical wool shift dress.
As much as you said you don't care how you look when you're riding your bike in the cold, I still think you're dressing properly while still looking quite cute
@boskejug - No, I don't have a reflective vest. My route in the city is pretty well lit and I have lights and reflectors on my bike and my rear pannier. The windbreaker in this video also has reflective piping.
You look adorable all suited up : D Safety glasses are a must have! Especially summer time here in the midwest, where you are always ridding through a swarm of bugs. Also, i only wear a helmet when there are no bike trails and i have to take the open road.
Love the video. I live in Metro Detroit and wondered about riding in the winter. I'm curious, what was that brand of helmet? Does the same company make a selection of liners or did that helmet come with one? It looks better than traditional helmets for winter riding.
I cycle most days in Ireland so temps not to bad. Rain is an issue.
I would suggest, for men a bullet proof tweed jacket they have great ones on LL Bean ( gray and brown) Perfect for cold mornings and of course wollen gloves and a flat cap.
Really just the same clothes you would wear if you were going to walk five mins down the road to a shop, bar etc.
I tryiing out one of those old fasioned black capes to keep the rain off. So far intial showers have being dealt with very well.
I ride a motorcycle even in the winter and the only addition I make from this is wearing more impact and abrasion protection. Layering clothing is still important. I spent a winter in Cleveland and learned that.
