Saw Dexter perform at Victorian and Australian finals between 1997-2000 and without being parochial, this is an amazing set. Craze won and Craze is truly great, but not a single hip-hop tune in this mix and it's as technically creative and musically acomplished as any set before or after. Awesome.
Was in Australia a few years ago, spent a few weeks in Cairns (rubbish for music). But was lucky enough to see this guy play. There was fuck all people in the club but to his credit he went on the mic before his set, and TOLD everyone in the club to come up and stand right in front of him for his set.... and then started off with that exact Jimmy Hendrix mix. Good man. Quality.
DMC went downhill after this year..dexta shoulda won w/ the 3/4 change-up and swing set..think craze won because everyone wanted 3-peat..craze was 100% clean but dexta was on some next level shit
@poopheadIII Plus One would've given Dexta and Craze a run for their money in this year, but he was robbed of his rightful place in the World Final, and the very mediocre Mr Thing went instead - mainly because most of the judges were his mates.
This is one of my fav' sets ever,it's crazy creative,it should have been the winning set,the only reason craze won was because he was makin' DMC history if he did!don't get me wrong craze is the biz',but on this occasion the wrong man won!
This set technically flawless. Dexta should have won DMC 2000. The conspriacy was since DJ Craze was a back-to-back winner, DMC wanted to see he 3peat. Mind you Craze's set was great (I think he no fader scratch won it) but this Dexta's set was flawless...I could watch/listen to this set over and over again
genius ... any other year his set takes it, but he went up against a flawless DJ Craze. This set easily beats some of the past champs though ! Awesome
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
dj craze killed dexter, sorry 4 the hater out there, craze set was flawless like all his championship set that why he won, if dexter was a little cleaner, not to mention his 3rd set was long and boring, he might had been the winner, and beside before all the d.j. perform, they know who's the winner, prop to dexter, but nobody fucking with craze.
I went to the 2000 DMC Champs. This DJ finished 2nd,should have won due to originality. But a yank called DJ Craze won for the 3rd time in a row with an average set.He started his set with some sort of banner or screen saying "DMC Champion:1998,1999,2000?".Can' t quite remember exactly, but it seemed to me he had won before he'd started,or else he'd look a right cunt for having the banner. And all of this crew congratulated him before the winner had been announced.A good night but a rigged result.
i say crazes set was still better. Only thing that i really liked about dextas set was his intro and Hendrix juggle. Everything after that i wasnt really feeling. It seemed sloppy.
Yea man dj dexta still dj's... I know this dude and he be doing his thing wit another unique set called grrilla step... Grrilla step consist of dj dexta, drum drum (a drumming crew) and last but not least the royal kaos KRUMP FAM... Now his involved wit the australian Krump movement.. So watch out for him and us (infamous royal kaos fam)
also I feel that he should have done the beat juggling right after the jimi hendrix shit and then used the jazz sample after that and then end the way he did. I think he he started out with the juggling but ended with a bang then it wouldhave been better.
You win you lose, not fussed really, I just like music so it's not ' pure noise' if you have another listen, I flip the time signature from 4/4 to 3/4, I wanted to do justice to the track and take it to a different psychadelic level rather than what is obvious, I doubt I was scored for technically juggling in 3/4 cos it hardly has been done, even to this day. Crazy B was the first person to juggle in 3/4 a few years back but it went over peoples heads + judges, same with my routine I think.
That routine culd have been judged number 1 for so many reasons but regardless, its still a groundbreaking routine to this day and always will be simply because of muscianship.. Craze's was also in a way but your routine reaches a much wider audience. After seeing you perform this at the 2000 Oz final i went and purchased turntables even though it was all the money I had at the time and I've never got to thank you man.. Peace
Like you, I aspire to this routine. It embodies the spirit of DJing more than any other routine out there. I especially respect the use of original vinyls rather than battle records or those purpose pressed records that they use in the new DMC routines. I don't get that. Thanks infinitely Dexter for inspiring me...
I really liked the Basement Jaxx juggle you did in qualifying, understated but really sweet with a nice 3/4 swing that accentuated the techno/industrial parts of the song. The locked groove stuff you were doing in 98/99/00 was much more refined and interesting than the run-of-the-mill drum and bass stuff, that most were trying to emulate.
Basement Jaxx juggle? Is that available to watch on video? I've never seen it. I was also at the Millennium Dome that night, and, along with Dexta's routine, the highlight for me was Kid Koala's trumpet scratch routine. He and Dexta both got standing ovations from the crowd, unlike Craze.
@dexterOz. Sup Dexter, Just wondering if have you ever designed a mixer? I mean from your 1999 set and the hamster switch was a wet dream. Did you have a hand in design?
It's just hit me where C2C "could" of got their routines from? if anyone? You were too far ahead of time bruv. Hate to say it since 2001, but the originality (D.I.T.C) has been diluted to weird ass, barely recognisably hooks.
@dexterOz Hey dexter, remember we played ball 1on1 at Prahran Court? You pulled a mad streetmove where you injured my finger? Haha my finger healed a bit wierd bro - mad memory from that incident. lol
And I never noticed you took dj'ing this far. Thats respect man!
@dexterOz Could you please tell us which records are you using in that routine?...I only recognize the Louis Armstrong record, Jimmy Hendrix´s Purple Haze, and Beatles. Thanks, from Argentina! :)
@dexterOz I saw this few years ago and it just popped in my head to look it up. You're an original, forget about the rules, making music and DJing means exploring new ground. You did just that.
nearly 7 yrs has gone and i'm still undecided as to who should have won this, craze or dexter... dj craze won by using typical hip hop beats and routine
dexta should have won he used something else and had more creativity and originality with tight druming and juggling
i mean dj craze is hella good but c'mon dexta killed his routine if not killed then originaly better
if craze lost he would look like an idiot because he had a banner that said world 2000 dmc champion b4 he won
a rigged decision i heard from many people who actually came there

Dude you're a idiot. 2000 was not the only year that Dexta got served by Craze. Dexta also got his ass handed to him in 1998 and 1999.
He lost and for good reason. DJ Craze had a better set in 2000 and in 1998 and in 1999. deal with it
