  • I'm having troubles reaching from 2 on E to 4 on D with my 1st and 3rd fingers. Does anyone have any advice on how to improve my reach?

  • @silverthewerefox Practice practice practice, i just reached the point beeing able to do it :P My personal tip would be to stretch your fingers at least 2 or 3 Times a day so your fascia becomes more stretchy, also nice: every degree of temperature makes your fascia more stretchy by round about 50% ;) your biological disposition has got to learn the movements :)

  • @einfachbitter Thanks. c:

  • I have the same bass : D

  • how come 5 people dislike this?i love this video lesson and so does everybody. God Bless Youtube.

  • Very good lesson. I appreciate than you explained technique instead of just playing flashy licks. Much appreciated.

  • Nice lesson

  • Why the fuck cant i do this, im a perfect bass player but everytime i try to slap i cant!! HELP!

  • Christ, look at that thumb!

  • Why r all the bass teacher not black?

  • Best lesson so far!!

  • i prefer bass over guitar because its a string per finer. i cant switch fingers on string like on guitars.

  • @stoneiousprime I Play guitar witch i love, but i just talked my dad into buying a bass for him to play

  • Thanks !

  • I have watched two videos from you guys and i already subscribed!!! that's how amazingly helpful your videos are! please keep making more!

  • QUESTION!!!

When sb is not sitting down and wants to use slapping technique does the position of their hand has to change??(thnx and sorry for bad english)

  • @M34sketosnakepit no man, its the bass that will be changed, when you are playing while setting down, the bass is resting on your thigh so its a bit higher than when you are standing. so its basically you have to suit your hand position upon the where the bass is.

there is no certain rule, its just you have to do it the way you feel good with it

  • @aassyr1111 Thanks

  • Thanks Rodgers super vid Helped me alot

  • the stare the stare D:

  • Funny, I was always taught to strike the string with the side of the knuckle so that bone and not flesh is making contact with the string.

  • LOL i have this same bass

  • thank you very much! i have a question for the people playing slap, is it best to pop with the pointer or middle finger? great tutorial! :D

  • CC button to transcribe in english is hilarious!

Russ: "on striking the E string, getting your aim, and working on the tone"

CC: "on striking the east rain getting your pain and working on the town"

  • Russ Rodgers is a BEAST!!

  • I've been playing guitar for 4 years now. Now it's time to play bass!!!!!!!!

  • yah gotta play thru those blisters!

  • thanks!

  • Every time I hear a bass I just go into a passion trance.. Yes, a passion trance.. Lol.... But I really do go into a trance.. It makes me feel so good when I hear it... I can easily say the same for classical guitars alike. Classical guitars + Bass Guitar = super mega crazy trance mode!

  • I have a fucking blister on my thumb, BUT DAMN IT! I'M GONNA TRY IT ANYWAY!

  • on of the best part of being a bass player is that after a few years your fingers became stronger and gain agility... and ladies like that :P

btw people, what kind of bass do you recommend (and why) for slapping: a jazz bass or a p-bass ?

  • @bogoid i like jazz bass better jus cuz its more versatile with the tones youre able to make with that extra pickup! up to you man just test both of em out in a guitar store.

  • @bogoid They are both suited for slapping. I think the J is a bit more popular because you can adjust the sound more with the two pick-ups (as opposed to just one on P's). It also has a neck pick-up which sounds more trebly. There are plenty of videos of people doing some really nice slapping on P's as well so it's all down to personal preference. Also, bass legends like James Jamerson used a P for slapping.

  • This was exactly the instructions i needed hah

  • Been into funk and wanted to learn to slap for long time, this video really helped and good sounding bass slaping is something u cant do with guitars ;)

  • One question i always wanted to ask... The pop after the thumb looks pretty forcefull, pretty strong... Does it wear off your strings faster ? Or makes it go out of tune ?

  • @CherryConcrete neither really. bass strings are beastly, and you can hold a bass just by it's strings without it going out of tune.... not that I recommend you make a habit of carrying it that way you understand ^_^

  • cheers man... u havee got my bass XD

  • great video, exactly what i've been looking for for months.

  • thanks man very helpful

  • Bass players make it sound so easy but that's cuz they must have had tons of practice! I'm trying it right now on mine, and it's pretty challenging to get it to sound like in the video! LOL If I can at all that is!

  • O LOL, I'VE SEEN VICTOR WOOTEN'S AND FLEA'S VIDEO LESSONS HOW TO PLAY THIS TECHNIQUE AND NOTHING, I SAW THIS AND I CAN DO IT!!! 0.o

  • great video! Could you please advise on piccup and amp/effects settings for a good tight crisp slap tone like you have there?

  • thank you bro! :D

  • can some one give me a good beginner bass name?

  • bill

  • i have that bass...haha exactly the same

  • i use pinky foe my high note

  • i have exact same one

  • Interesting. I use my pinky for the high note.

  • piko

  • hjey quick question . ok i been playing bass for a short wile but at 5:26 u start talking about the last set of note, and u say the A,flat on the 4 fret of the E string but thats not a A,flat thats a G# and also its a G# on the 6 fret G string not a A flat so could u clear that up ?

  • A flat is the same as G sharp. A flattened note is a semitone lower in pitch than the main note (in this case, A). A sharpened note is a semitone higher in pitch than the main note (G).

  • G# and A flat are exactly the same note, just different ways of saying it.

  • G# and Ab are enharmonic equivalents. (Same sound, different way of saying it)

  • @doucheailmandick

G# and A flat are exactly the same note

  • @Fiarzen wrong, a flat and G# have the same pitch, but are different notes.

  • @HendrixPrinceFlea89 A♭ and G# ARE the same note. they are played on the same fret, on a piano its the same key, its simply having two different names for the same thing. being called ignorant AND stupid doesn't make you two different people. sorry for the friendly jab. couldn't resist. :P

  • @slepp720 Agreed with HendrixPrince. They have the same pitch but are different notes. If in the key of E you are going up the scale and say E, F#, Ab, you are wrong!

  • @slepp720 It depends which key you are in! It doesn't matter what instrument guitar, bass, trumpet, piano, or glockenspiel! They are different notes with the same pitch! This is the exact reason, why in some keys you can say double #.

  • @slepp720 Say we are in the key of D and I say flat five. Now the fifth of the key of D is A (D E F# G A). Now if I say flat five it is Ab because A is the fifth. If I asked you and you said G#, you'd be wrong because they are not the same note. If you said G# that would be a sharp fourth since G is the fourth. Ex 2: A C minor. a minor chord = flat third. So the third of the key of C is E. so a C minor has an Eb. You wouldn't say D# because # second is not what makes a minor chord.

  • @HendrixPrinceFlea89 wrong maybe on a guitar, but not on bass, especiall on the same string b4 the 12th fret

  • That is the best slap video that i have every seen! and i have seen 3 different ones on youtube, thank you so much!

  • Is that a Warwick?

  • No. I think it's a Ibanez.

  • It is an Ibanez I had the exact same one

  • yes its an ibanez, i've got the same but black.

  • So, you first slap and after press the finger on the note?

  • You got it the wrong way. You slap and then RELEASE the finger (but just slightly, you don't want to get an open string)

  • I'm am playing the exact same bass. lol

  • another guitarrist switching/adding to bass and i found the right lessons!

  • This is a nearly perfect instructional video. - Nicely framed and very clear images, Highly informative and concise instruction. Excellent lesson. Thanks! Please post more.

  • I liked this video alot. I play guitar, but find bass exciting and interesting.

  • @bbbobbbieo me too!!!

  • @bbbobbbieo i think guitars are overused if i were you i'd get a bass and help the minorities

  • @bbbobbbieo My friend i think you should pick up a bass guitar we bassists are in a disavantage here we need more dudes on our side
