It did not look like the tree was in good shape. It might have been dead. No way was that an old growth tree. Notice how tapered the tree was. Large butt end, but not very tall. { I've known some people a lot like that } They probably had a good reason for bringing it down.

...That guy did not choose to cut that tree down, his boss probably come out a few weeks before priced it up and charged roughly, about £800 at least for that one tree. Tree surgeons look after trees and treat them from diseases, or reshaping, cutting the dead wood out. Very rarely will a tree surgeon cut a perfectly living healthy tree down unless it's in the middle of a town and got to big, but even then you just reduce the size of it by about 30%.

So why should it stay standing? To fall on someone perhaps. If that tree was so special it would have a protection order on it, like many of the English oak trees.

I don't know about that tree, but if one is near a house, then it's falling will cause more CO2 pollution if it falls on said house because of rebuilding. That's not actually a redwood. Don't know exactly what species it was, but it was a pine or a fir, not from the hemlock family like redwood. Long, thin needles are the giveaway, as redwoods have flat, scale-like needles, and they grow in fern-like ridges, not scattered tufts like that tree.

I'm no arborist, but my grandfather's ashes are buried under a redwood in a grove in Western Sonoma County, California.
