  • I do have some questions though to avoid confusion: when you make the chain do you need to make one extra chain stitch before you start a new row? Where would you go from here, tutorial wise? I can't find any info - double crochet or? When you say to start a new row on the next loop do you mean the VERY next loop because mine turns more into a longer chain? Thanks :)

  • This tutorial was really wonderful, big thumbs up from me! The visuals are very clear (as is your teaching) and I think the slow motion is great, learning through repetition. Ive always wanted to crochet and even though I can knit well, until now crochet has always gone over my head. My tension may need a bit of work, it's variably tight then perfect in different areas.

  • this one look like a double half to me but i could be wrong

  • Very helpful! Thanks for posting!

  • love this...you make it easy!

  • @theboyzz23 Thank you.

  • @chezzywater101 she is doing slow motion !!

  • uh your sound just goes away after 10 seconds..

  • you suck at teaching

  • Are single crochet and slip stitch the same thing pretty much? Or am I crazy?

  • wow great !!!!!!! i like it you are my inspiration teresa!!

  • @Mursevilla Thank you. :)

  • Thank you!!!!!! Great video!!!

  • i hit my finger everytime i hook the thread how can i avoid that??

  • @angelinejt Your fingers are an important part of working the stitches so until you get further along you may hit them from time to time.

  • Thank you!!Seeing someone do it in video is much easier than reading a book! lol I was totally doing it wrong...

  • Do I chain stich through the initial slip knot at the end of the second single crochet row?

  • @launica204 You will not be able to work through your slip knot. When you crochet, by default, you always have a loop on your hook.

  • SQUEE I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I totally use your stuff now EVERY time for reference you are HEAVEN sent now I can FINALLY finish my bear ear hat YAAAAAAY!!! ^^ As you can see I am so excited.

  • @TarebearsCrochet Great to hear you are finishing your bear ear hat!

  • Thanks i was wondering what the hell i was doing (havnt croched in a long time)

  • do you put the hook through every loop, or every OTHER loop?

  • @Dakota7257 I put the hook through every loop

  • I greatly enjoy your videos! Very clear instructions, good visuals, and good job on the slow motion. Thank you! I have a question, though (as the person above) regarding how you control the yarn with your left hand, and the middle finger. I've been trying to do it as you show, it holds the tension much better than other ways I've tried, but it is harder to do! Any tips on how to do it? What to keep in mind? Thank you!

  • @jelenche23 I posted a recent video on how to I hold the yarn in my left hand

  • Awesome video. I was planning on making my boyfriend a scarf for the winter and this helped me greatly. I sort of remembered how to do it from my mother but I was unsure if I remembered correctly. Thanks!

  • Your tutorials are AWESOME... What I need is how you control the yarn in your left hand. In other words, can you show how you wrapt the yarn around your fingers, because you hold on to the project with your thumb and index finger and use the next finger to advance the yarn. My way of holding the yarn controls it with my indext finger continually moving and your way seems much more efficient. I recommend your tutorials to everyone trying to learn to crochet.

  • @crochet49 I will send you a video that shows how I am holding my yarn.

  • why is mine so tight?

  • @mellyh52 The stitches may be to loose or to tight, when you are first learning how to crochet. This has to do with your tension. You will want to loosen up on your yarn so it flows through your fingers looser. This will give you looser stitches. Keep practicing and you will get the hang of it.

  • You just taught me how to crochet! :D

  • i was doing it wrroooooonnnnnggg XD

    thanks ^^

i wasnt doing the second part...i was putting it in...thread over..and then through both,,,not out..and then putting thread around again

    thanks XD

    *^^* silly me

  • @PunkLolitaAnnie You are welcome.

  • @tjw1963 *"^o^* merci

  • @cherrypop296 with a s=chain. she has a tutorial for that. :)

  • thank you :D

  • can anyone tell me what do I need to start Crochets? I am just a beginner :(, I need to know the needle size, kind of yarn or any other tools that I would need to start Crocheting!! would be very grateful if anyone would enlighten me on it. Im jus wasting my time at home and hate wasting time.

  • @patsweet150 You will need a crochet hook and yarn.

  • @tjw1963 tnx Tresa..but I guess there are different sizes of hooks..which size will I need to start with? I reside in UAE and its hard to find knitting materials here, I wil be asking my fren to get it from my country, as she is goin on vacation.

  • @patsweet150 I use a size 5.5mm crochet hook a lot of the time. That should give you an idea for an average size.

  • @tjw1963 thnk u so much..that was helpful.. I hav been following u on facebook too.. ur such a sweetheart :)

  • Your video is great I got a book and a video and it did not make a bit of sence you walked me thru it so much better!!

thank you tjw1963 or teresa your rock

  • Hi Teresa. Your videos are awesome. I was wondering whether it's possible to make an afghan/cover by just continuing either the single, half-crochet, double or triple crochet? Also, could u please show me how to make a ladies sweater - something that fits well..thanks for all your help..im learning from u :)

  • @spunkygirl1987 It is possible to make an afghan using one of the stitches you mentioned. You would make a chain of 175-225, depending on the width you are looking for.

  • Thank you so much for this video! It is the best one I have found and I finally understand what i am doing :)

  • @twobabyboyz I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • made always looks so funny i guess i do it so tight maybe thats why?

  • @nycutiepie41683 Crocheting tight will create a different look.

  • @tjw1963 hi

  • Thank you. Without your detailed explanation, I would have kept inserting my hook into instead of under the stitch on my third and subsequent rows. It makes for some interesting textures...

  • hi, wat is the needle no. u r using? txs.

  • Hi,

Thanks for the great videos :).

I was hoping you could answer my question.....

Why does my crochet squares always curl up??

It doesnt matter what stitch I use, it always curls up.

    Please help :)

    Thanks in advance

    x

  • If you are new to crochet, your stitches may look strange until you develop a tension and consistent stitches.

  • does anyone know why the longer something i make gets the wider it gets?

  • This may happen when your beginning chain is to tight. What you will want to do is crochet a loose chain or use a hook a size larger so the chain does not restrict your stitches from expanding normally.

  • These instructions are excellent! I'm learning so much, books are good but this is much much better. Thanks again!

  • Thank you so much! I have books that show stitches, but sometimes that isn't enough. I'm just starting to learn crochet and your videos are so helpful!

  • This is great! I plan to start relearning this again. Your videos make it easy to understand. Thanks!

  • You are welcome.

  • hi , i wanted to know how to recognize which side is right for single crochet stiches as i just started to practice SC help me. i m learning by your videos as you are very good teacher ...i understand ur videos very easily thanks ....

  • When you are working in rows, both sides can be used at the right side. When you are working in rounds, the side facing you is the front side of the stitch.

  • Thank you so much for this video! I am a beginner and i have started to make a scarf. The problem is that one side of the scarf is perfectly straight while the other side starts to get crooked. I keep having to do it over and its driving me crazy! What am i doing wrong? Can anyone help me? pleaaaaase ;_;

  • When the edges are uneven that may be due to a stitch being missed or an extra stitch on the side. I suggest counting so the stitch count is even.

  • All of your videos are so great! I've been trying to learn and I just couldn't pick it from the books I have, but your videos do the trick!!!

  • I appreciate the comment, thank you.

  • so after the chain is complete and we go back over and do the single crochet do we just go into the very top or the top two parts to the chain

  • You will go through the top of each stitch below the "V" two loops that create the top part of the stitch. Make sure you count because it is easy to drop stitches.

  • Thank you so much for this video; I have been having difficulty understanding how to do it but your video made it so simple to understand. Thanks so much!!

  • I have been having problems trying to understand a crochet book and this finally cleared it up, thanks!

  • You are welcome.

  • Hi thanks for the vid I've been working from a book and it's been confusing. The one question I have is that in the book she says to work the chain you use the back bump. I see that you go into a different part of the stitch. You mentioned there are different ways of crocheting but will these make different looking stitches? Does it matter?

  • I am not sure what you mean by the back bump unless you are talking about the back loop. There are two loops at the top of the stitch. I like to go through both loops. I feel it makes it more secure and gives the piece a smoother finish. You can go through the back loop only, which will give it a texture. That way is correct as well as the front loop only. In the end, it does not matter and is more preference. Pick what technique you like the best.

  • hi to all the crocheters i'm 11 and i got a big needle thing and i can crochet really good questions welcome just reply

  • Thats a great video i wish i had non about you when i started crochet my ant tryed to showed me but she was left handed!

  • too hard haaaa

  • your videos are very good and extreemly easy to understand

    cheersX

  • I never thought that slowmotion crocheting could look so sensual. Nice sensitivity to the medium. I think I will try my hand at it. I've always wanted to learn and I'm still young enough at 46 years.

    Cheers!

  • You sure are young enough. Comment again if you need help.

  • Love your videos! Reading a book is just not the same as seeing it done.

  • Thank you for the comment. Happy crocheting. :)

  • I love these videos of yours. I've been trying to teach myself crochet from books, but without much success. Your videos have been extremely informative.

  • Thank you, I appreciate the comment.

  • I love your videos! I've just started to crochet and could not figure out the diagrams in my beginners books! Your videos are easy to understand and incredibly helpful!

  • Thank you. Write any time if you need help finding another video.

  • thank you so much for your slow mo

  • You are welcome. :)

  • thanx 4 the tutorial. i almost 4 got how to crochet

  • These videos are fantastic but I have to tell you I have never felt more spastic in my life!! I just can't get the hang of it. Practice makes perfect I guess huh?

  • Practice is key. Keep trying and you will get it. I did not get most crochet stitches or understand them right off the bat. My stuff was so horrible I would throw it away. I regret throwing it away now.

  • Thank you for the comment, I appreciate it. :)

  • Hi Teresa, I have been trying to make a wrap for my crochet hooks using single crochet, but my ends always ended up wonky, I think I know where I was going wrong now after watching this video.

  • Thank you, I appreciate the comment. :)

  • hi, i am interested in making a baby blanket. i have no experience, would that be a good project to practice with? what stitch should i use and how long i make the chain?

    thank u!!!

  • I will recommend the size I/5.5mm crochet hook for a baby afghan. Usually a chain of 100-125 is an average size for a baby afghan depending on your hook, yarn and crochet technique. The shell stitch is a nice and easy pattern stitch.

  • when i try to crochet by about the fourth or fifth row it starts looking like a triangle

  • That is an indication you are missing stitches, most likely on the edge. It is easy to think you have them all done if you are not counting. Counting is very important to keep your whole piece even.

  • I am tying to learn now. The sigle crochet seems harder than Calculus. I hope I will eventually get it.

  • You will be able to get it. Once you practice, calculus will still be much harder than the single crochet.

  • I am L O V I N G your videos and have learnt from scratch from you. As a starting project I'm making a blanket out of single crochet squares that I will sew together. HOWEVER! My squares (about 25 stiches each side) are really curling at the corners and do not lie flat.. is this just issues with my tension? will they sort themselves out when I fix them together at the end?? Thanks again for the wonderful teaching.

  • Regular squares should lay flat. If you are working with the tunisian or afghan stitch, it will curl.

  • I'm just doing the regular single stich that I learnt from this video - I don't know what afghan or tunisiian are! I guess this means I'm doing something wrong then... any ideas? Is it anything to do wiht the way I hold my work when I'm stitching?

  • If you are really new to crochet, it will take some time to develop a consistent tension. It is important to keep the count of your stitches accurate and the same all the way across.

  • I've been thrilled to learn to crochet and now i have this wonderfull source:)))

    thank you so much!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • i managed to do a slip stitch and single stitch without making a mess, thanx to your tutorials. but i got lousy when it came to a single crochet, especially after turning my stitch around for the 2nd row. where should i put the hook into?

    thanx.

  • It will takes some practice to become consistent with the tension of your stitches. Don't be hard on yourself if the stitches don't look quite right. That is all normal. I experienced the same thing when I was learning. Practice the basic stitches then then a simple project. You will get the hang of it.

  • I am a beginner as well. My grandma has tried for years to teach me but I was a lost cause! I am finally starting to get it and your videos are great! I am starting with a foundation chain then using single crochets. Is it normal for it to want to twist for the first several rows or am I doing something wrong?? Thanks again!

  • The chain may twist around once it has been made. It will be necessary to straighten it out, as you are crocheting your stitches along the chain.

  • Thank U So much! I was getting confused between a slip stich and single crochet stich. Now, when you do a single crochet, for the next row, where do you put the hook at the end? I find it hard to find the end. Don't I chain one for the turning chain for single crochet? And do I put the hook in the foundation of the next row or do I skip one? Is the hook for the next row supposed to be in the same loop where my hook is looped to, or skip one? LOL. I probably made you confused. I am a beginner.

  • You are welcome. :) When you are doing the stitch in the chain foundation you will crochet in the second chain from the hook. When you are going back across the stitches, you chain 1 and then crochet in the same stitch that you just made on the previous row. If you skip that stitch, you will be doing 1 less stitch each row and that will make your rows decrease each row. Eventually you will have a triangle.

  • This is seriously amazing!! I literally just started today and this is so helpfful!! Thanks

  • You are welcome. :)

  • can these be made into squares and then put together? thanks for the help the video was great

  • If that is what you want to do with them. You can crochet just about anything and any shape.

  • this was so helpful. i was just about to give up bcuz i honestly had no idea where to go from the end of the chain. now im on a roll again. thank you!

  • Thank you, I am glad that you have got it. :)

  • thanx so very much for replying. now i understand. you're a peach and this video is the BEST one here. you're the only person who has gone slowly. i wish you'd make videos in slo mo of all other basic stitches...hdc, dc, tc...it's impossible to watch other's videos on these stitches...again, thank you for you're reply.

  • I do have all of them in slow motion. I will send you the playlist link.

  • my computer sound and volumn are really terrific, but about 1/4 into this video, the sound cuts off...what's the scoop?

  • Even the background noise with no talking in slow motion sounds funny, so I cut the sound during the slow motion segments.

  • thank u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • I'm just echoing everyone else's gratitude, lol. You rock, woman!!!

  • Thank you very much. :)

  • Wal-Mart, AC Moore, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn Fabric & Crafts, Herrschners. I have bought used crochet hooks from E-bay. They last forever.

  • Thank you sooo much! I just got this amigurumi book and it doesn't have many pictures so watching this in slow mo was very helpful. Your tutorials are great!

  • Thank you. :)

  • I cannot make head nor tail of my "how to crochet" book this has been so helpful thankyou!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • This video made it so much easier for me to figure out. I had bought a book and I didn't understand the drawings at all. Thank you so much!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • The videos would be great if there weren't all thise breaks in the audio

  • There is nothing being said, since the breaks you are referring to are slow motion segments.

  • I was recently laid off and needed something to distract me. I have crocheted in years! Thanks to your easy slow-mo video I was able to pick it back up! Thanks again!!!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Thank you so much! I have never knitted or crochet in my life and in 5 min watching your videos something clicked and this makes total sense. I have been watching and reading tutorials all over and they were so confusing. Right now I'm using just the single crochet stitch and making myself a neckwarmer, since it's that easy.

I still can't believe how easy it is, the only reason I'm not finishing it now is because my fingers hurt :P

  • You are welcome. :) If I may recommend that you hold the hook looser so your fingers and hand will not hurt.

  • Thanks!

  • Thanks...i figured some things out...1 last question is when I am done with row 2 (only single crochets) my piece looks like a curly fry. After 3 rows it looks like it could be a ruffled colar on a shirt. Is there a common mistake that could cause that? Thanks so much!

  • It sounds like it may be your tension. When you are new to crochet, your stitches are going to be somewhat uneven until you practice a lot. It will work itself out over time and lots of practice.

  • I was wondering when your done with row 1 and you turn it isn't the working yarn in a different position? Also in row 1 you put the hook through the chain but on row 2 you put the hook under the "v". I just want to make sure i'm looking at this the right way. Thanks so much!!!

  • The foundation chain is worked different in going through 1 chain loop. I like to work the remainder of the single crochet through both loops at the top of the stitch. The decision is yours. You can go through both loops, the front loop only or back loop only.

  • Hello!

I've been learning to Crochet, and I was wondering.. does the way you hold your yarn matter? Like, you see how you hold the main work with your index and thumb, and feed the yarn with your middle? I hold with my thumb and middle, and feed with my index.. the yarn feeds over the index finger, instead of under, like you feed with your middle.. you get me? Will it affect my work?
