As a deaf mom to both a hearing and deaf child, I do support teaching them both sign and oral so that they can learn the deaf world, also learn how to live in the hearing world at the same time. I support that schools should have English sign language to support grammar and writing skills in deaf students and that ASL should be for interaction and social atmosphere.
I have an evidence right here in North Country New York about education system for mainstream schools. I am Deaf substitute teacher aide at mainstream schools. I found out that those few Deaf students including cochlear implant completed 12 years of mainstreaming but they did not meet their requirements to graduate. They would need to stay extra year or two to complete their requirements. Some stayed and the others dropped off. I am told that it has been that way since mainstream schools.
I read that a large percentage of mainstreamed implant kids wind up back at a deaf school. On the other hand every deaf adult I meet who was mainstreamed said they liked it but admit it was lonely.
YYEESSS get deaf asl leader like you and barb to go there and speak out ASL is one of lanaguage tooooo we need to stand up and speak out they will be specchless and cant stop you and it will led to right directions then it will spread all over USA becasue of strong ASL leader are speakin up !
