This is good. I never took the time to learn this stuff. "I wanna draw manga NOW," I'd say. Because of that, I taught myself. And I did get pretty good (with anime), but I could only get so far. Part of that reason, was because I tried to skip from beginner to almost pro-level. I need to sit back, and restart. Besides, it'll give me more time to work on my script :)

instead of legs and arms, imagine they are cylinder appendages. Just decide where your light is coming from and make sure your shadow is on the opposite side of the cylinders. Experiment with that basic idea for a bit and you'll see how you want to do it.

@Ubertastify cuz art class in school doesn't grade you depending on your skill level. Art is a place where the teacher provides a project and kids can use materials to do whatever they want and the grade depends on whether you participate or not. Its not necessarily the job of a grade school teacher to teach you how to sketch no matter how ridiculous that sounds.

Smudging isn't cheating but it's not suppose be used the way she is using it. @leianarose She said in the vid she's using a 4B pencil. What that means is that if you draw something with a normal (HB) pencil and this pencil with the same amount of presure, the 4B will make a muck darker value. In beginer stuff like those it doesn't rally matter in my opinion so just take a normal pencil and try to draw and if you want it to have more depth just press your pencil down more. If you want to know more about this feel free to ask.

@diddet0 - If you are new at drawing, you must make sure that your drawing is accurate before blending. Your teacher is showing you possibly line drawing to make sure your drawing is accurate first then you will learn proper shading techniques. Don't worry, you will learn shading then on to further techniques.

Thanks for being the first eHow artist to draw from reference. Too bad you didn't finish this, and your work doesn't show the same value range as the subject. A simple wooden cyllinder might be easier for beginners. Also, you're shading in little horizontal curves, when it's faster and easier to shade with long, verticle strokes - it's called economy of marks, and it still follows the form.
