My feet didn't even touch the water. I didn't like Vang Vieng at all. I felt as though I was prey in Vang Vieng. Hardly anyone was there and the guest houses were half empty. I was there in 2006, none of this party scene was happening but the tubing was available. Very polluted river. Get badly injured in Laos and your going to Bangkok or Singapore for medical attention... if you can get a flight. Laos is a beautiful country after the rainy season, but at new year the locals don't like visitors!

Perhaps these are people who appreciate culture but may also just happen to choose Vang Vieng as a place in between to let go a bit, to mix it up. You can't make such judgements based on one video. I spent 5 days there, I can tell you these people are far more interesting than any I've met, more so than most 'white trash' in the western world who don't even own a fucking passport.
No mention of the negative impact it is having on the local people & their culture. No mention of the underlying corruption. Not surprising. As long as backpackers are enjoying themselves, that's all that matters really. Drinking and taking drugs 100 days straight: what a 'Bloody amazing' experience.

Why not try some local noodle soups and communiasting with a few Laos people. I'm sure the local Buddhists love seeing drunken geezers floating past in bikinis. I've just been to Vang Vieng but skipped the tubing as there enough drunken people in the village. Instead I went to the Blue Lagoon an the lying Buddha and did a Lao cooking class. Much better than a broken skull.

Why there are so many white people in vangvieng, it is not attractions but it is cheapest pure heroin on earth and that is a reason they are there for..it is not that far from golden triangle where they produce pure heroin...Lao Goverment should have a law ban opium selling in that city(dirty money there)

I was there a few months ago.. it's changed so much! A girl died two days before I got there. I fell on glass, got caught on chicken wire in the water, my mate fell off a motorbike, my other mate sliced his back open..... it was the craziest week of my entire life, but I don't regret it.

I doubt it will ever truly get banned. If you take away the tubing, V V has little to offer that Chiang Mai or Koh Samui doesn't. Alcohol, cheap digs. Like minded people.

@bungfai It has become more than 8 now, nobody has exact information on it though. I tried to talk to the director of the hospital but he was too scared to say anything. The slides are closed though, which is great because this was the most dangerous thing to do here I'd say.

The river is named the Nam Song and it does have a current to it. Don't get drunk or messed up and do the river. If you hurt yourself there, the closest good hospital is in Bangkok.

Personally i prefer Half moon parties in Koh phag nan. I seen the police station in Vang Vieng, my shed is bigger in England, this worried me to think what the hospital must be like... With this in my mind i couldnt relax whilst up there. Id say im up for adventure having jumped the bloukrans in south africa this year but Tubing is seriously dodgy, if you have an accident your done for. Nether the less do visit as Loas is Beautiful and be careful whilst up there. Dont smoke the dooby

I live in Thailand. I've been to Vang over 15 times in the last 5 years. I have friends who live there. I've done the tubing. I've seen the serious injuries... and worse.
I understand in the modern drinking age, getting wasted and travelling down a rock strewn river, with like minded people peopbably does seem like the ultimate experience, more than Base Camp in Nepal, more than boating down the amazon, more than working in Oz, 500 miles from the nearest town. So I do concede the point.
Damn. the tide was low when you went... I cut my hand on a rock while getting out of the water (1st day 2nd bar of a 5 day stay(doctor said no booze or getting it wet ¬.¬)) but doesn't hold a nickle next to your buddy.

Thanks for this. I went here in 2008 and after speaking with the locals found out a local had recently drowned on the river and a tourist had died the month before and TWO had died on the river the month before that! It's not difficult to see why, seemingly invincible young people + alcohol + heights + fast river currents = disaster sooner or later. I had a blast on the river, but I didn't drink AT ALL. Instead I concentrated on perfecting my back flips. Have fun but keep your common sense.
@bungfai considering I've backpacked the world for 3 years and the number one attraction for every single backpacker has been tubing, then yeah, I think labelling it the "ultimate" backpacker experience is spot on.
Here it is, the rumor of Vang Vieng is clearly witnessed and sufficiently evidenced here. When people are on drugs and intoxicated, they don't feel pains of injuries. Even a near-death broken skull still looks like fun or even funny. Any one getting out of this thing without harms in any way should consider himself/herself very lucky.

I went tubing and it wasnt really that amazing to be honest, it was ok but nothing special, i enjoy going and hanging out with the locals much more instead of staying in the tourist hot spots, i enjoyed Vientiane much much more ! but each to their own i guess, just dont see the point in going away and hanging around with English people.
watch out for the pink eye, don't just stand in the river..(wee snakes), clean your cuts often or they will grow, don't buy drugs unless you are 100% sure whoever is selling is on the level (some people sell to you, then call the cops on you and split the 500 US ticket), don't eat the WHOLE happy pizza (share it), pack light, dont tube on the river after dark, treat yourself to a room with air con, get aquanted with the street baguettes.
i went tubing in about october last year..... it was fucking brilliant! such an amazg time! i would like ot thank this bloke who crackd his head open, because it is injuries like that which add to the amazing legend that is tubing!

just got back from travelling S.E asia. vang vieng was one of the highlights. its a crazy and amazing little town. but i would agree with the sentiments of this video- be careful!!! my friend was coughing up and vomitting blood after coming off the slide awkwardly
Loved it there! Really do need to be careful there..I busted both my knees on the last big concrete slide. Couldnt walk for one week and had problems for a year. Really was worth it tho..what a heel of fun place!! LAOS!!!
i was there too on my birthday! I had a really great time there and met lots of friends there! On my first day at the tubing, I was so drunk and instead of swinging down at the tubing but i just jumped down into the river and knocked my back! The only thing that i could remember was... i was in the river and had a back pain there... luckily i still can swim but it was incredible great!
Awesome, brought back so many memories, good and bad! I had a great time tubing, got incredibly drunk,slipped on the bamboo ladders and concussed myself. Thank god for good friends looking out for you! The second day was better when took the tube down the whole river, totally worth it, the view is breathtaking. Enjoy the view not only the booze x

It's just about common sense. Drink water, keep diluting the booze. Remember, it goes dark very fast. Just because it looks like a long summer twilight: it's not. Tubing in the dark, not fun, scary. Get back by 6. Don't screw around in the mud. It is dangerous. Our friend got hurt.
Recommends you don't drink only the local whiskey - drink a few beerlao as well. Hey dumbarse, how about drinking some bottled water? I always recommend people tubing here if you drink a bucket then do a bottle of water after. The drunkness is way out of control the least you can do is remain one of the more coherent of the mob, then less chance you'll become yet another dumb statistic. Tubing is great fun but if you get plasterd then injure yourself you've got no one to blame but yourself.

32nd birthday. Too much fun. Went of the swing at the 1st bar and didn't land "pretty" - woke up the next day with the right side of my body from armpit to hip black and blue and a rainbow of other colours. For the winding, bruising and pain . . It was WELL worth it! Back in Laos in 5 weeks and I am not sure I can pass up doing it ll over again ; )

Personally i prefer Half moon parties in Koh phag nan. I seen the police station in Vang Vieng, my shed is bigger in England, this worried me to think what the hospital must be like... With this in my mind i couldnt relax whilst up there. Id say im up for adventure having jumped the bloukrans in south africa this year but Tubing is seriously dodgy, if you have an accident your done for. Nether the less do visit as Loas is Beautiful and be careful whilst up there. Dont smoke the dooby

I live in Thailand. I've been to Vang over 15 times in the last 5 years. I have friends who live there. I've done the tubing. I've seen the serious injuries... and worse.
I understand in the modern drinking age, getting wasted and travelling down a rock strewn river, with like minded people peopbably does seem like the ultimate experience, more than Base Camp in Nepal, more than boating down the amazon, more than working in Oz, 500 miles from the nearest town. So I do concede the point.

Thanks for this. I went here in 2008 and after speaking with the locals found out a local had recently drowned on the river and a tourist had died the month before and TWO had died on the river the month before that! It's not difficult to see why, seemingly invincible young people + alcohol + heights + fast river currents = disaster sooner or later. I had a blast on the river, but I didn't drink AT ALL. Instead I concentrated on perfecting my back flips. Have fun but keep your common sense.

Here it is, the rumor of Vang Vieng is clearly witnessed and sufficiently evidenced here. When people are on drugs and intoxicated, they don't feel pains of injuries. Even a near-death broken skull still looks like fun or even funny. Any one getting out of this thing without harms in any way should consider himself/herself very lucky.

I went tubing and it wasnt really that amazing to be honest, it was ok but nothing special, i enjoy going and hanging out with the locals much more instead of staying in the tourist hot spots, i enjoyed Vientiane much much more ! but each to their own i guess, just dont see the point in going away and hanging around with English people.

watch out for the pink eye, don't just stand in the river..(wee snakes), clean your cuts often or they will grow, don't buy drugs unless you are 100% sure whoever is selling is on the level (some people sell to you, then call the cops on you and split the 500 US ticket), don't eat the WHOLE happy pizza (share it), pack light, dont tube on the river after dark, treat yourself to a room with air con, get aquanted with the street baguettes.

we saw one guy bruise his ribs on the very first bars jump, but nothing as drastic as this video ha ha ha

just got back from travelling S.E asia. vang vieng was one of the highlights. its a crazy and amazing little town. but i would agree with the sentiments of this video- be careful!!! my friend was coughing up and vomitting blood after coming off the slide awkwardly

i was there too on my birthday! I had a really great time there and met lots of friends there! On my first day at the tubing, I was so drunk and instead of swinging down at the tubing but i just jumped down into the river and knocked my back! The only thing that i could remember was... i was in the river and had a back pain there... luckily i still can swim but it was incredible great!

Awesome, brought back so many memories, good and bad! I had a great time tubing, got incredibly drunk,slipped on the bamboo ladders and concussed myself. Thank god for good friends looking out for you! The second day was better when took the tube down the whole river, totally worth it, the view is breathtaking. Enjoy the view not only the booze x

It is awesome. The scenery is heart-breaking and tubing is great fun, and if I were still a young lass I bet I'd do it 100 times too.
It's just about common sense. Drink water, keep diluting the booze. Remember, it goes dark very fast. Just because it looks like a long summer twilight: it's not. Tubing in the dark, not fun, scary. Get back by 6. Don't screw around in the mud. It is dangerous. Our friend got hurt.

Recommends you don't drink only the local whiskey - drink a few beerlao as well. Hey dumbarse, how about drinking some bottled water? I always recommend people tubing here if you drink a bucket then do a bottle of water after. The drunkness is way out of control the least you can do is remain one of the more coherent of the mob, then less chance you'll become yet another dumb statistic. Tubing is great fun but if you get plasterd then injure yourself you've got no one to blame but yourself.

Loved it! 4 days last April including my
32nd birthday. Too much fun. Went of the swing at the 1st bar and didn't land "pretty" - woke up the next day with the right side of my body from armpit to hip black and blue and a rainbow of other colours. For the winding, bruising and pain . . It was WELL worth it! Back in Laos in 5 weeks and I am not sure I can pass up doing it ll over again ; )

should have seen this vid before i went tubing !! got pulled into the river and smashed my head on a rock under the water from bar 3.. had a gash 5 inches on the top of my skull down to the bone sprained my neck and shoulder pretty bad aswell and lets just say there not the best conditions in the local hospital so had to go straight to Bangkok
