the irony of the khan videos - they are so clear, yet... if you did a word count of every single khan video, the most frequently used word by far is "confused"
Great videos but I cringe at the notation @ 8:10: -1^1000 = 1 because that is incorrect. It should be (-1)^1000=1 because -1^1000 = -1!!! That's a big difference!!
@prence1725 sometimes parentheses are used for emphasis. saying 2 * 3 + 2 is saying exactly the same thing as (2 * 3) + 2, so the parentheses are only there for emphasizing the fact that you do 2 * 3 first and + 2 second.
I get English well and all but, if you could make subtittles in other languages, like spanish for example, it would be even better than it already is!!! Explaining this way is great, so you can hopefully take it across cultures!
6 people who watched this were drunk and accidentally clicked the dislike button instead of the like button, and then they started freaking out and went in a car and crashed into Target.
I recommend this excellent Math channel: ( Mathmatchpoint ) to everyone who wants to become good at Math. He is going to teach you Math the EASY WAY, from the basic to the advanced topics. Thanks to him, I got 97% on my Math test.
Could you explain the differences between these examples, -3^3, (-3)^3, (-3^3), -(3^3). It boggles my mind that the differences between where the parenthesis are placed would change the rules. I don't understand why the sign would be carried along with some and just added automatically depending.
@cnuts83 the order of operations (OOO) is what's important here. remember that exponents are done after parentheses and before multiplication in the OOO. so when we're faced with -3^3, the exponent is calculated first, so 3^3 = 3 * 3 * 3 = 27, and then the negative sign is considered (a negative sign is the same thing as multiplying by -1), so -3^3 = -27. for (-3)^3, parentheses come before exponent in OOO, so (-3) * (-3) * (-3) = - 27.
i want to try it because i am in Algebra 1 Honors and this is my first honors class and i want to pass my EOC for it and im using your videos to help me.
On a + - graph; applying it to real life situations.
Lets see; if I have not 4 apples I can write it as negative - 4 apples. If I have another not 4 apples or - 4 apples; how is it I don't have - 8 apples; instead mathematically I have plus + 8 apples. How is this, someone please explain?
Watch his videos, watch all of these videos. And even if you don't understand a specific video just keep watchting it anyways because you will get it. This man will make you smart and is a great source of knowledge. I my self just have been watching every single one of his videos over and over and over... I mean it's great! I fucking love you Sal!
@HourOfGlory you could just click on khanacademy than click uploads on the far left then on the right type into the search bar 'calculas' instead of watching around 1800+vids until you hit calculas :] but than its your life lol take my advice or leave it
-1^1000 is -1 since the negative sign is not part of what you raise to the 1000nth power! :)
So, -1^1000 is the same as -(1)^1000.
But when you include the negative sign:
(-1)^1000, you have to know whether the exponent is an even number or an odd number. Am I late in my reply? Maybe you've already learned this.. Hope it helps in any case! :)
well 2^3 = 2 x 2 x 2 = (2 x 2) x 2 or 2 x (2 x 2) = 4 x 2 or 2 x 4 = 8.
Remember when multiplying, it doesn't matter which side you start from. so it doesn't matter if you have 2 x 3 x 2, if you start from the middle (3 x 2) you'll get 6. then you'll have 2 x 6 = 12.
so in simpler forms - 2^3 = 2 x 2 x 2 = 4 x 2 = 8.
and exponents is the repetition of the multiplication process.. therefor 2^3 is 2 X 2 X 2 X 2 = 16.. i multiplied it four times.. my prof was so mad with it,, lol
zero to the zeroth power (0^0) is one, as he showed you divide by the number so it would be 0/0 and although division by zero really isn't allowed, its undefined, think of it the same as 1/1, or 2/2 or 3/3 and even -1/-1, they are all equal to one. The rule x^0 = 1, where x is any number, has a higher precedence than the rule of undefined numbers because well, they're undefined. I hope that explanation wasn't too confusing, I can't explain things as well as Mr. Khan, but I hope this helped.
Rabbit creative has a good point about explaining the parentheses. At (8:02) when you said -1^1000=1, it should be -1. However with the parentheses (-1)^1000=1. Just a silly mistake =D

@colombianchic128 you square the 8 and the 9. so 8 * 8 = 64, and 9 * 9 = 81. so the numerator is 64, denominator 81.
