Yes I agree that this is one unbelievable breathtaking performance. How unfortunate that I heard this so late in time and there are not even any documents that would have informed me of his existence as a brilliant pianist. Was he American? The world missed a great musical experience with people like David Smith and Annie Fischer.
David Smith is in my opinion one of the 20th century's greatest pianists (I usually prefer his performances to both Horowitz and Michelangeli - with both of whom he has been compared - to put his playing in context). This is such a rare and precious recording because Smith abandoned his career in music through disillusionment with the music profession. Thanks so much for sharing it. Did your teacher study with David Smith? Do you have more of Smith recordings?
My teacher did not study with David Smith. I don't know exactly how he knows of him, or where he got the tape from. The tape consists of two Scarlatti sonats, a movement from Chopin's B Minor Sonata, L'isle Joyeuse, Ravel's Toccata, and 1st movement of Beethoven Appassionata.
My teacher did not study with David Smith, and I'm still not sure how he came across this tape. I will upload the other recordings too. =)
Please do upload them! They're important for our heritage as there are so few recordings of David Smith! You should also send a link to youtube user 'creativebna' who is actually David Smith's son, as I'm sure he'd want to know about them. Thanks again for uploading this amazing find! Jack
