Great playing, I once saw Mick play a Fender Jazz Fretless at a Bass Show in 1987 in London, he still sounded the same, more about his fingers than the bass. Plus 4 of the 5 Japan Albums were the Travis Bean TB2000. People always mention the Wal Fretless...
Thanks.... just 'wasted' the best part of a day watching all your posts... a few times over. This was my favourite MK / Japan song (along with cantonese boy) and you nailed it - great playing. Now then, what guitar can I sell to make room for another Wal...
youre a fuckin legend, ive never been able to learn this track, now i can (im not a proper bass player but just want to learn them cos they intrigue me so!)
A couple corrections I've been wanting to point out. On the main smear, Mick would never spread his fingers out like I do. He plays the "A" with a one finger, claw-like technique and simply slides back then rips it up the neck. Also, on the post chorus line, again he would never spread his fingers like that. It played on the open G. (G A G B) or for the tabbers (0 2 0 4)
Excellent stuff ! IMHO Mick Karn is the hardest bassist to copy as he is so idiosyncratic in his style. He's definitely my favourite player. The Pedulla does it justice, although a WAL would add a little more authenticity ! Have you ever played a WAL ? Awesome instruments....I own 2 and they are amazing instruments and totally different to a Fender, Musicman or any other bass of high quality !
@ruffian1868 Ive never played a WAL. Ive always been amazed at the tone Karn gets. Just awesome. Owning one is a bucket list item for me. Congrats on owning 2. Sweeeet.
nice work on all the songs, you really got it down. i often wondered what kind of strings he used back in the late Japan/Titles/Dali's Car era. i love his tone on Dali's Car. i'm pretty sure he uses rounds now, more aggressive and funky. but, as any one who knows will tell you, the sound is really in the fingers.
In his book he says he doesn't care what strings he uses. (Or amps for that matter) the only thing he shows a preference for is his Wal basses. And I do believe he has always used flats. Ive never heard the overtones of a roundwound on any of his recordings.. And yes...the sound is in HIS fingers.
@Xtr41 yes he always used flats, pretty much everyone did in the 60s-70s with some exceptions. Now everything has become roundwound and flats are ignored.
Thanks!! U gotta puts flats on her to get "that" sound. Im using D'Addario Chromes. Its recorded direct with a little compression. Definitely try the flats..They're kinda weird at first. Thumpy..no sustain etc.. but you'll learn to play em and LOVE EM!

Mick Karn, one of the greatest bass players ever. No one has ever come close to his style and technique. Good job on learning that!

Hi. Yes, its an '85 Pedulla Buzz. Flats on a hard epoxy-like coated fretboard.

Nice job, brother. I have a pentabuzz 92 pedulla, but I can't quite get THAT sound out of it. Kick ass!

Yes! It an '85 Pedulla Buzz. I had the neck refinished recently by Mike Pedulla himself.
Just a dream to play...very fast, slim neck..

Nice! What is that bass - Pedulla? Like the varnished fretboard.
