It's straight feedback done by the bassist while holding the 16th fret on the D string, and bending it episodically. Delay and distortion is running on through the whole song (that's what gives the feedback that dreamy sound) , and tremolo effect is used for that part where the bass plays melodies.
Well, if you're so convinced the tab is right, why do you ask : )? You choose to go with the tab and do the feedback with an gtr, I'm fine with that. I mean as long as it works... But let me tell you: That's NOT how Tool does it, so you're you're both wrong! With a lot of conviction, but still not nailed.
I mean, do you see a second gtr anywhere? And what do you think is the bassist doing, some shamanic dance? And regarding tabs, I can easily find one that say's the opposite, so...
@TheMandalic but it dont look like a bass.. and a e-bow on a guitar does exacly that sound...I have a e-bow too and I can get exacly that sound in my guitar, and all the tabs says that is a guitar... and btw I did the question before I see the tabs so...
Listen closer... when the song starts, it begins with an F# and then it's joined by another just an octave higher: that's the feedback. And if you check past interviews, you'll realise that both tool guitarists hate e-bows. Besides, doing it with a gtr implies having a 2nd guitarist for the rhythm part...
I'm not a messiah, but I can already tell you that those tabs are wrong (it wouldn't be the first time a tool tab is off). And it doesn't need to look or sound like a bass for it to be one (little hint: the solo in "The Pot" in not gtr, it's bass again), otherwise it would be a pretty sad limit to your creativity imo. You can replicate it roughly with a gtr and an e-bow, but you'll hardly get that thick texture that way. E-bow and feedback do differ...
Whoever recorded and uploaded this video is hella cool with me. I've always wondered what Justin was doing when playing that song, "Lost Keys (Blame Hoffman)" live, I know he uses an eBow but when I saw them live when they played the song, it look like he was hiding something while in front of the cabinets.
Maynard either wasn't feeling it or pissed at the crowd for some reason at this show, not much movement by him and back to the crowd the whole song plus no scream.
maynard saounds like he gives as miny fuks asd me/.
