Once upon a time, there were two different companies. Two brothers, the older named Dallas and the younger Austin, were each other under the family name of Ion Storm. The older brother thought it could never be beaten by it's younger brother and spent all of it's time partying while the younger brother spent all of it's time thinking of how one could push boundaries and revolutionize genres. I can see why they wouldn't use the L-Button on the N64 controller. With the weird layout of that controller there were always some buttons left unused, usually the L button and Dpad. Assuming this game uses the control stick, imagine having to move your hand over to the left "prong" to hit the L button, and then reaching your thumb over to the control stick to move. Granted, that's still no excuse for giving an absurd command for crouching and not even explaining how to do it.
