The Ghan train is named After the "Afghans" who came to Australia soon after it become a colony. Primarily they used to transport good from north to the south of Australia. This became a primary route of transportation in the country therefore the current route is named to remember their legacy. The Ghans or the Afghans.
@wlaohu I had the privelage of being on the longest passenger train in Australia, working as a chef on the ghan. 1400 metres long with some 54 carriages. Took 25 minutes to walk to our kitchen from the staff crew quarters.
@getachefupya Wow! Incredible! I love the way Aussies support their rail service. The US seems to be backward looking. Recently Gov. Walker of Wisconsin turned back federal funds that would have helped build rapid transit through the state, which ultimately would have connected Minneapolis with Chicago. Several US governors are turning back federal funds in a similar manner.
When I took the Ghan in 1988 it terminated at Alice. Otherwise I'd have taken it to Darwin. I guess it goes to Darwin now, eh?

@bodryn Yes the line through to Darwin was opened in 2004

@clubpenguin777 You should see how long passenger trains are in China. Some have up to 30 carriages.
