Back in the late 70s I was a second-man at Old Oak Common. We had to take an 08 from Acton Yard to Swindon Works. The maximum speed for an 08 under tow was 25mph...And they would only let it run in the early hours...Boy that was a long trip...!!!
Because an operational class 08 can only do 15mph as its a shunter. Even though this one was running with the con-rods removed I doubt it was permitted past 25 or 35 mph tops. Also the mk2 coach was probably being used as a brake force runner, so its obviously been moved a fair distance.
A brake force runner is a coach or another vehicle with continuous automatic brakes that is coupled to a rake such as this in order to improve the braking performance. The 08 will have been shut down and have no air in it's brake system to aid the 47, hence the coach. The 08 is being moved a fair distance as they wouldn't bother with coupling a carriage to it to improve braking if it was only being moved a short distance
that was my 08,had misfortune to be the driver when blew up the traction motor en-route from Reading to Oxford near Kennington through speeding !.
