If one were to try to place it into Earth history the best one could do would be to say that the "conventional" arms and armor recall England at the time of the War of the Roses and, in some respects, quattrocento Italy (see paintings of Paolo Ucello). One of the things I like about the series is that the dramatic content is compressed. Martin seems to feel no such compunction.
