He never took the pole out. The poles were not hit. That pole was more than likely lyingin the shoulder and dragged out. If you look closely you can see a scratch mark in the asphalt indicating the pole was moved at one point.

He could have also been coerced or fooled into itm but judging by his smiles he seems to have been willing & now that he is caught is trying to act like he is distancing himself from them.
